An American expatriate in Rome unearths his family legacy in this sweeping novel by the acclaimed author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini A Southerner living abroad, Jack McCall is scarred by tragedy and betrayal. His desperate desire to find peace after his wife’s suicide draws him into a painful, intimate search for the one haunting secret in his family’s past that can heal his … family’s past that can heal his anguished heart. Spanning three generations and two continents, from the contemporary ruins of the American South to the ancient ruins of Rome, from the unutterable horrors of the Holocaust to the lingering trauma of Vietnam, Beach Music sings with life’s pain and glory. It is a novel of lyric intensity and searing truth, another masterpiece among Pat Conroy’s legendary and beloved novels.

Love Conroy’s books. Read this several years ago.
Reading a Pat Conroy novel for me is pure pleasure; it is akin to listening to beautifully orchestrated music. He has a knack for weaving words together in a way that mesmerizes the reader and evokes great emotion. His stories are both haunting and shocking in their raw truthfulness. This one was no exception. Although this book deals with dark and controversial times in our history, and is graphic about the horrors of the Holocaust, it nevertheless ends on a happy and hopeful note. It definitely takes you on a journey into darkness but it doesn’t leave you there. It is about love and hate; hope and despair; sin and redemption. Beautifully written!
Beautiful, honest writing.
Loved it ! One of my favorites
In my top 5 favorites. This story accompanied me throughout the day. It led me to google and research parts of it. When I wasn’t reading it I was thinking about reading it. The character development is perfect. Learning about South Carolina was enchanting. Also the time spent in Rome. I want to visit both. I love this book and will read all 800+ pages again.
A bit wordy
This is probably my favorite Pat Conroy book, highly evocative of the Charleston, SC area and culture. I lived there from 1969-1972 and every element, atmospheric detail, and character rings true. And his prose is beautiful.
It was not what I expected. A well written universal informative history.at times funny and also sad and you just wanted to change the story traveling to Italy and back to the colonies and the south. Both civilian and military . With the ring of truth and multiple views of the times that I personally lived thru . All sides were covered. A good read I highly recommend.
My favorite Conroy’s novel; I reread it every couple of years!
One of Conroy’s best…maybe THE best.
Great book by a great author
