They’re baaacckk!
When a simple ‘find & fetch’ case throws private investigator Twig Starfig and newly-minted wizard, Quinn Broomsparkle, into the middle of an EBI murder investigation, it’s just another day in the Elder Realm.
If murder were Twig’s only problem, he’d be the luckiest half-dragon in the land. Murder he can handle. Fulfilling his promise to his scheming, power-hungry father … power-hungry father to run for a seat on Lighthelm’s city council? Meh, he’d rather face a demon with a toothache.
On top of their case going sideways, and Twig running for a council seat he really doesn’t want, Twig and Quinn are forced to face some unpleasant realities about their budding romance, while still learning how to handle the wizard-familiar bond they now share. Throw in a red fury with abysmal taste in boyfriends, a ghost pirate-parrot who drinks too much, a murderer who will stop at nothing to get what they want, a host of new friends and enemies, and you’ve got a situation where no one is safe and everyone is Fairy Game.
*This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone.

What a pleasure to return to the world Meghan Maslow created for Twig (half-dragon, half-fairy) and the lovely cast of characters from the Starfig Investigation series. The beginning of the book finds Twig (investigator) and Quinn (the first wizard in a thousand years) looking for a magical artifact on commission from a professor and they find a cute new friend-a ‘fuzzle’! I love those darling little bundles of fluff but this one packs a punch–it is able to heal! But the search for the antiquity leads to all kinds of excitement that involve competition between academic rivals and murder! Forming the backdrop for the current case is Twig’s agreement (with his fairy father) to run for a seat on Lighthelm’s city council as a condition for clearing Bill, Twig’s red fury demon assistant, to reside and work in the Elder Realm. Our sweet Bill attracts and is attracted to some of the worse boyfriends in the universe (Meghan Maslow, you MUST fix that!) and that, including relationship challenges, is keeping Twig and Quinn on their toes. All this and a ghost parrot who is drinking to drown his loneliness for his dead pirate captain. Boy, does the writer keep us hopping! It’s amazing how she keeps all the balls in the air and has continued a fantasy series that is among my absolute favorites.
In book 2 we have Twig Starfig (1/2 dragon, 1/2 fairy) and his mate Quinn Broomsparkle (1st wizard in 1000 yrs) being hired by Professor Icegem to find Scrodbum’s Hammer. The book starts off with them in a pyramid and pretty easily finding a mallet. While in the pyramid they come across a furball that they name Cookie and she/he has a well needed power. They are convinced it’s not the real hammer but nothing else is found so they take it back to Prof Icegem. The prof agrees that it’s not the real hammer and asks that they continue to search for the hammer while keeping his two top colleagues/rivals from getting the hammer first. Almost immediately people start dying and attempts on their lives happen. Behind the scenes we learn that Auric Starfig, Twig’s father, has had multiple attempts on his life as well. Greyclover a fairy on the high council is determined to keep Auric safe and Twig notices that Greyclover’s interests seem more personal than professional. Bill the Red Fury is still in Twig and Quinn’s clan and is now dating Dyknor the dark elf or as Twig calls him Dickmore. Pie the ghost pirate parrot is still trying to find a way to cross over into the hereafter while drinking everyone under the table. Also Twig’s father has pressured him into running for office on the local council. Twig and Quinn are having a few problems in their relationship as well but don’t all new relationships have a few bumps in the road? Twig gets a reunion with his mother that is a surprise to him and a little closure as well. Quinn is still fielding requests to return to the Hominus realm since they found out he’s a wizard.
I really enjoyed this second book in the Starfig Investigations series. It seemed like it was more smooth and everyone was more settled in their roles. I really like how Twig and Quinn are making their own family or clan as they call it. Twig still gives his father a run for his money while getting what he needs from him as well. There’s a colorful cast of characters and they all make a good place in the book. It didn’t seem as if anything was thrown in just for filler. The end leaves it open for more books in the series and I’m really looking forward to reading them. Definitely recommend this series if your interested in Fantasy, well written stories and well written characters.
ARC received for and honest review.
5 stars
Be Fairy Game is an excellent continuation of the Starfig Investigations series.
I enjoyed seeing how the relationship between Quinn and Twig has progressed. They are still the unique characters I loved from the first book, but with more confidence in themselves and more hope for a happy future.
The investigation(s) they undertake are outrageous at times and interesting all the time.
Once more, the author gives a different version of the fairy tale creatures we all grew up with that is interesting and oft-times humorous.
There was more tension in this book than there was in the first. I worried about some of the characters and was relieved when things were resolved in some form or fashion.
The premise, the execution and the addition of even more wonderfully detailed characters have me ready for more by this author.
