I found this historical western romance absorbing from the first chapter to the end. This “second chance story” takes place in 1867.
Three years ago, Bay Donahue, a gunslinger, comes home to his home in Sacramento. Unfortunately, when he returns, he finds his wife, Suzette, in a compromising situation. Instead of giving her a chance to explain, he sneaks out of town and moves to Conviction.
Three years later, when the story picks up, Bay is no longer a gunslinger. Now he is a lawyer in Conviction. Suzette has also moved to Conviction. August, a friend of both Bay and Suzette, has hired her as a manager for the hotel and restaurant he owns. Since Bay left Suzette on her own with no money or protection, she accepts. She and her August hope that, given time, Bay may allow Suzette to explain the situation, and they will get back together.
Unfortunately, Bay’s only goal is get his revenge on the woman who broke his heart. Therefore, all Bay wants to do is hurt her, over and over again. Suzette is hurt and depressed over the state of her marriage.
Since this book is primarily a romantic suspense, there is a lot of suspense in this book. The sheriff and his deputies learn that several men from the “Most Wanted” list are on their way to Conviction. Therefore, the sheriff and his deputies are keeping watch so they can arrest them before they cause trouble or go after Bay for his past.
Meanwhile, Bay finally listens to August and visits Suzette and allows her to explain the situation. This is the beginning of Bay beginning to mellow towards Suzette.
When Bay realizes that someone is poisoning him, he knows that one of the men on the “Most Wanted’ list is trying to kill him. Therefore, he also becomes involved in the search for the men.
Thus, Bay and Suzette’s new beginning is tightly intertwined with the search for the man who is poisoning Bay.
I enjoyed this book very much. However, I have a problem with Bay’s character. Not only did he leave Suzette without telling her, but he also left her without a thought about how she would be able survive alone. Then, when Suzette finally comes to Conviction, all he does is hurt her on purpose. And he still refuses to listen to her side of story. Frankly, I found it hard to forgive him myself.
I feel bad for Suzette because, as a woman, she cannot live alone, nor can she can she just run away and find another reputable job. However, I am proud to say, that Suzette does not just agree to return to Bay, no matter how often he apologizes.
In spite of that, I still enjoyed this book very much and had trouble putting it down once I started.
I love this series more with each new release. I love that each story is so unique you cannot wait to see where it takes you. Bay and Suzette’s story takes you down the trail of broken hearts due to misconceptions and stubbornness. This story is entwined with great characters, a unique plot and unexpected obstacles.
This was a great, action-packed book! There were never any dull moments. I loved that aspects of this historical fiction novel are applicable today. We should never rush to judgment or assume things about people. That’s what created all the problems between the two main characters. Thankfully, they were finally able to see their mistakes and work toward repairing the wrongs. But was it too late before the killer makes his move?

MacLarens of Boundary Mountain Historical book nine brings Bay and Suzette’s tale of love, broken marriage, deception and the truth to work to find . Settle in with good characters, Western town , and good romance. Really enjoy the community this author has created .
Author’s copy with thanks. Opinions are entirely my own.
In the era of 1967, Conviction, California, was the raw far west and the enterprising men and women struggled to settle, work and live. The MacLarens bought huge parcels of land and divided their many talents; raising cattle, horse breeding and the law. Brodie had his hands full as Sheriff when former outlaws, turned lawyers, settled in the area. One of those was Bay Donahue. The love of his life is Suzette. This is their story of love, work, and loss; would they find themselves together again. Having followed this series since Colin’s Quest, I’m always anxious to read what is new with the MacLarens and friends. I loved this book!
This is a book that I have been wanting and waiting to read and it did NOT disappoint.
It also showed quite clearly the damage that jumping to conclusions and letting pride rule causes. Several years of unnecessary pain is at least one thing.
Both main characters were ones that I enjoyed and they had quite the struggle a head of them. They also had loyal family and friends who were there to support them and to help as much as they were allowed.
One of the supporting friends was August, who was also a co-partner with Bay. Talk about him going the extra mile! We find out just how much as the story goes on.
Bay’s enemies are more than willing to go the extra mile to exterminate him as painfully as possible. And one of those enemies want him to suffer a lot. He already has done some damage which Bay is just not aware of yet. Some truly clever, evil is at work. If you like plenty of action in a story, this one has it.
Trust is going to be a major challenge if Bay and Suzette are ever going to go forward in any relationship. But are they going to be able to do anything? Because it’s getting more clear that danger is coming for them.
I liked the way the story ended. This author has an interesting way of not only solving the story but throwing out a hook about another person in the story. It comes as a surprise that you don’t see coming but I find that I like that.
I voluntarily read an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and this is how I felt about it.
Bay’s Desire by Shirleen Davies is the first book I have read by this author. This book pulled me in from the first page and kept me turning the pages until the end. It was a fast paced story with a good bit of action that kept you on the edge of your seat. It was well written with well developed characters.
Awesome historical western romance which is part of the MacLarens of Boundary Mountain series. What amazes me with each of these books is that Ms. Davies takes us on the journey into the story. I’ve loved reading about all the MacLaren’s. This book is about friends of the MacLaren family, Bay and Suzette. The blurb gives you the gist of this story but not the action, adventure, heartache and love surrounding all the characters. Secrets abound and we get a tiny glimpse of future stories. Many characters from previous books make repeat appearances which adds realism to the story. I received a complementary copy of this book but chose to write a review. I look forward to reading future books by Ms. Davies.
this is a wonderful story, Bay is a lawyer who was a hired gun, Suzette is his wife but nobody but a few know that. after drinking bay begins to fell bad, bay and suzette do not get along he left her after he found her in a compromising situation. I was given a copy of the book but this is an honest review.
