I chewed through the first and second book in the Foundling series and promptly preordered the third. Spent most of the first book trying to figure out what was going on (in a very good way)!
This is a FANTASTIC story, easily one the top ten I’ve read in the last several years. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to discover this author! Luce is a force all of her own, spunky, sassy, and opinionated who follows her own path in almost every situation. To say she’s unique is a definite understatement! This is a mysterious, twisted, unexpectedly funny story that comes alive from the first sentence and takes you on one heck of a wild ride from start to finish that leaves you scrambling for the next book because you just have to see what happens next! This caused me to miss almost an entire nights sleep because I told myself it was only going to be 20 minutes, lol, but several hours later I pried myself out of the book (when it ended!)! Absolutely loved everything about this book, and have already started the next!! Thank you so much for the opportunity to review this gem!
All that I can really say about this book is that its different. Good but different.
Bayou Born has an excellent plot and interesting characters. There were a lots of surprises and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
New-to-me-author.
Urban Fantasy.
Mysterious ride from start to finish!
Grab your Scooby Snacks, kids.
The tiniest sliver of romance.
(Total blue balls here.) It’s been so long since I read a book without sex, blasphemy, I tell ya. My kinky brain was ready for anything. The side characters would make a great harem, just saying. Good thing this story was filled to the brim with uncertainty, a fast moving plot, and likable characters.
This book held me in a secretive grip, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. From the start, I kept picturing swamp thing, no idea why. Yet, this book twisted all my theories and smacked my hand. This was way more than I anticipated. I can’t add any quotes, I feel like they’re all spoilers. The one I loved the most is a huge reveal that I can’t take from any readers.
The characters are individually appealing and written with interest and spark. Each with unfathomable backgrounds and each with their own struggles. (Although, not everything was revealed.) It still felt like a tsunami of feelings you can’t quite grasp yet.
Fascinating, really.
I highly recommend to urban fantasy readers. I found this one rather unique, full of twists, and unputdownable.
What do you do when you get a book off NetGalley to review that just happens to be the fourth in the series without realising beforehand?
Well, you start at the beginning with this fantastic gem of a read Bayou Born the first book in the foundling series and got to say I am bloody impressed.
I read this book super fast then instantly ordered the second one I was that invested here.
A new author for me but one that I will have no qualms reading more of in the future.
Genre-wise this is urban fantasy which isn’t a category I read that often and from the moment I picked this up I was totally on-board.
Whatever I originally thought this was it turned out to be completely the opposite of what I was expecting: doing a complete 180 on me.
This story centres on Luce Boudreau a wild child of mysterious origins and strange body markings discovered feral in the Bayou of Mississippi when she was just a kid.
Adopted by a local cop and raised as his own Luce has no memories from before that day.
Now a cop herself Luce really wants to know her past: where she came from: who she is.
So when a girl with the exact same markings is discovered lying injured in the bayou Luce is all over it.
So this story started slowly building its momentum lulling you into thinking it was something else entirely than what it actually was when Bam, as we hit the middle of this the narrative here exploded and this became a runaway train.
This was full of twists and turns galore contained just so many fantastic multi-faceted characters and though told completely from Luce’s POV I still got a sense of all the distinct personalities involved with this.
I really don’t want to give to much away with this first book but just know this that once this gets going its gonna knock your socks completely off.
Love Luce, totally crushing On Cole and also so intrigued by the rest of the White Horse Security team.
This really was well written and just ever so imaginative.
I am totally salivating for the next part of this like right now; can’t wait to get Cracking with it.
This was a firecracker of a start and I for one am ever so interested in where this is ultimately heading.
I Recommend this one so highly.

Such an interesting journey that kept me guessing from one chapter to the next. The mythology Hailey Edwards creates is fascinating. I’ve just finished book 2 and it’s still a voyage of discovery.
Some of this review will be a little vague as I dislike giving (or seeing) spoilers!
This little gem does start a somewhat slowly, but it builds up steam. The main character is funny, snarky, and a little lost as to who she is at first. As the plot ramps up, it is interesting to see how her ‘world view’ changes.
I acquired Bayou Born as a free kindle book and promptly forgot about it for several weeks. I tend to not read the synopsis when I open a new book so I can immerse myself in the story without preconceived notions. That way when the plot twists (and in this one it does!) I can be completely surprised. I was so impressed by the story, the characters, and the world building that I bought the next book in the series before I had even finished this one. I look forward to seeing what happens to the main character, her sister, her best friend, and the underlying sexual tension with the ‘love interest’.
Overall, Bayou Born was delightfully entertaining!
Oh my, I was blown away by Bayou Born. I recently devoured the Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy series and decided to check out other books by Hailey Edwards, since I really love her voice and the humor that is very present in her work. I would say Bayou Born was perhaps a bit darker that the other series, but still has that sense of fun (when appropriate) from the main character. Luce Boudreau was rescued as a child from the bayou by a policeman who then adopted her. She has no memory of life before being found, and she has no clue about the strange markings on her body. Now a police officer like her father, Luce is always looking for clues to her past, and she’ll follow any lead that presents itself. When she meets the owner of White Horse Security and his crew, things begin to get interesting. With several missing persons to investigate, reports of super gators coming in, and more questions than answers, Luce is in for a bumpy ride before it’s all said and done. With lots of fantastic characters, a rich urban fantasy base and plenty of action, I couldn’t put this book down. I’m so glad the second book in the series, Bone Driven, is out because I’m all set to read that next.
Love this series. Can’t wait to start the third book!
This is a new author for me but this book kept me reading into the night. Still not done, but there was a big surprise so I will definitely be finishing this one as I still can’t figure out where this will end, and I’ll be looking for more by the author.
Super funny, as well as an excellent writing style.
I still haven’t decided if I liked it yet
a bit different, but enjoyable
It keep my interest all the way through and that’s saying something and awesome read
Terrible. Main character juvenile and unreal
Bayou Born by Hailey Edwards a fantasy of a five-star read. This is the first book in the foundling series, and all I need to know is, is when is the next book out!! I admit I am a die-hard Hailey Edwards fan so when I saw this I knew I had to inhale the words at a rate that I didn’t think was possible, I re-read it straight after as I read it so quickly I was scared I missed something. It was even better the second time around. This is the best book I have read by her, and that’s something. Lucy Boudreau is a young female police officer on the surface but underneath she is so much more, more even that I think we knew when we read the blurb. Found in the swamp 15 years ago by a police officer who becomes a farther figure to her, his influence made her the great woman and character she became.
There is so much going on in this story, there is a darkness and mystery to the swamp, and the people who surround it. There are some great plot twists and reveals that will have you gobsmacked. Sometimes the first book in a series can be all world building and character development but this book seemed to just be developed and amazing from the first page.
There is a great uniqueness and an openness to the writing that will leave you wanting more and more. When I finished the book, I needed a large drink I was left with so many questions and can’t wait for the next book in the series to answer some questions and I dare say pose some more.
Great mystery, kept me reading all night!
Very inventive and fast paced. Really enjoyed reading. Will read more in the series
This was a very enjoyable book with s great new world.
