Classic Space Opera – bad bad guys, b-a-a-a-ad good guys, a humble but know-it-all hero, and an uprising of the downtrodden. Lots of twists, some freelancing with quantum physics (but honestly, it was written 35 years ago by a non-scientist…) Most importantly, Fun to read.
Even though the movie was apparently a real flop, the book is wonderful. I love L. Ron Hubbard. He gets such a bad rap because of Scientology. Many people evidently still don’t know he created it as a joke to prove that people will fall for anything. At any rate he was a genius and his Mission Earth series (all 11 of them) is absolutely great. It’s kind of a SciFi Candide, (he was apparently a big fan of Voltaire). It’s hilariously funny and, in it, he predicts all kinds of things that turn out to be true. But, wait, we’re talking about Battlefield Earth, right? It’s kind of a Planet of the Apes-type tale that makes you think and feel bad–but it’s really good. Sorry my reviews are kind of sketchy but I’m an old person and I can’t think of words any more. Lol, just trust me, I wouldn’t steer you wrong. =)
This was my favorite book in the 9th grade.
Battlefield Earth is L. Ron Hubbard’s magnum opus and the fifty-year celebration of one of the most prolific world-building science fiction authors of all time. It is a must read and will absorb your full attention until you turn the last page of this 800-plus page epic blockbuster. With action-adventure, mystery, western, love, politics, spy, intrigue, and warfare strategy and tactics all woven into a colorful tapestry, this book sings!
This is for the audio-book edition. A surprisingly great audio book production of a story I wasn’t sure if I’d like or not.
While always curious about this sci-fi epic, for years and years I avoided it due to its supposed connections to Scientology. The AWFUL movie didn’t help matters either. But then I came upon having an extra credit available in my audible account, and not having a clear idea of what to listen to next, I chose Battlefield Earth due to the length (a whopping 45+ hrs!) and thought I’d perhaps at least get my money’s worth time wise.
I was not disappointed.
Despite misgivings related to Hubbard and Scientology, Battlefield Earth really has nothing in it tying to it. It’s not propaganda at all. It’s actually a pretty darn good sci-fi epic.
The audio-book in particular impressed the hell out of me. Multiple cast members reading distinctive characters, accompanied orchestral music, and more, all add up to quite the production.
And the story itself I actually really enjoyed…until the half way point.
The first half, the story of mankind’s desperate fight against the Psychlos and the cat-and-mouse between Tyler and Terl, were great. But then that story sort of end half way through and become something else entirely, of which I wasn’t so much a fan. It got political in ways that reminded me of Star Wars Ep 1 The Phantom Menace, and it’s content that bored me.
Due to the amazing production value and really great first half I give 4 stars, but it loses out on the extra star do to the meandering 2nd half that really could have been a second book…if at all.

When you hear “Ron Hubbard” you automatically think Scientology. Well, this book has none of that dribble at all. It is simply a pulp-fiction fantasy book from the thrilling days of yester-year. It is fast paced adventure, laced with mystery and excitement. There is even a bit of romance and sci-fi. Lot of pages – little over 1,000. But it goes quick.
Don’t try to watch the movie or even compare the book to its Hollywood counterpart. This book is the real deal. It goes on sale at times for $.99. Well worth the investment.
This has got to be one of the best Sci Fi novels I have ever read. The story just grabs you from the very start and holds you all the way. I couldn’t put it down. The audio version is amazing to. A full cast and soundtrack. I had to drive cross country and it filled four days of highway with adventure and excitement. I whole heartedly recommend this book.
A GREAT book! I don’t like science fiction books but this one was a page turner. Very well written and teh story is very original. I highly recommend.
In the first few pages in the book L Ron Hubbard rights how he was taking some time to write a regular old-fashioned science fiction book. And that is exactly what it was. You could read it and laugh or get into the amazing story. The movie was lousy for anyone who had read the story.
This covered interplanetary war spaceships space travel the earth after it had been decimated 1000 years before the revolt of the humans it was just playing great.
