First things first…. I once again listened to the audio and loved it. I highly recommend it if you like audio books. James Masters does an epic job when it comes to these books.
This review may contain spoilers to the previous books, so if you are not caught up with the books, maybe not read this review….. yet.
I will keep it spoiler free for Battle Ground though.
I have finally caught up with the series and am so happy I’m current with the books and now dont need to avoid spoilers anymore.
BUT.
I finished this book a few days ago and I’m still not over it and also not sure what to think yet.
So that being said this will most likely be the shortest Dresden Files review I have written yet.
This book was insane…… Like really insane.. It was non stop action super fast paced. Maybe even a little too fast paced for me.
I normally love all Dresden books but I had some issues with this one. Not only do we lose some people we do not even get the time to process that .. it felt too rushed and a bit of a cheat for me.
Everyone comes together in this book and I loved that. And of course we lose some along the way and not only some side characters, we lose some big players in this book and not even get a minute to breathe and cry and cry some more because… we move right along in this epic battle. Others step up and become allies… For the time being anyway… while others become the big bad.
Overall this book is busy , really busy and we hardly get time to breathe as I said multiple times …. Not only is there an epic battle ( that spans over the entire book), but also so many other things going on.
With the end of this book , we know that things will be way different than they ever were and I’m not sure where this will be going… in future books. But I do hope wherever that is…. We will get some down time and allow a slower pace, where we can reflect and process what just happened.
Overall, of course I loved it but not as much, there was just so much going on and it was too busy to reflect in some of the loses that were just kind swept along with us.
So, that being said … the highest I can give it is 4
Oh, this one hurt. A massive emotional rollercoaster. But also had some great moments. I am so glad I waited to read Peace Talks, so I had this one ready to read straight after it.
Every major player (and even minor ones) all came together to help save their city from Ethniu and all her allies. It was just a crazy, lengthy battle, with so much death and destruction, but also twists, plotting, and some real heartache.
I loved this book, and I can’t wait (though I know I’ll have to!) for the next one.
Butcher never lets me down. His work is incredible.
Each novel in the Dresden files gets better and better and this is no exception. Jim Butcher has learned a winning formula that he uses to wrestle with your emotions and win your respect. Wonderful series well worth the read.
Awesome! Welcome back Jim.
Jim Butcher is amazing as always, and this book… Wow.
I found the book dragged a bit during the early-middle but picked up towards the end.
You have to love an author that makes a “boot to the head” reference in his story.
Looking forward to seeing where Butcher takes the series next.
Should be read with Peace Talks – it is essentially part 1 and part 2 in separate books.
If you enjoyed the previous Harry Dresden books, you will love this one. Action from beginning to end in classic Dresden style. Butcher does not disappoint. My only complaint (although minor) is I wish Peace Talks and Battle Ground had been published as one book rather than split into two when they are one intact story together.
Another fantastic read by Jim Butcher!
I was grateful to have the two latest books back to back, but now I am missing Harry and crew again. I laughed at times, cried, gasped a lot, and cheered through both books. The extra bonus at the end of the story was a wonder gift and well timed with the holiday season. Thank you!
This is one of those series that I wish I could go back and start again from the beginning–read it for the first time, but for now I will wait patently for the next release.
Well done Mr. Butcher–well done again!
Probably THE best book I’ve read this year (2020)!
Harry Dresden is such a wonderful, entertaining, clever man! I wish he was real flesh and blood in my neighborhood!
Harry Dresden fights off his biggest foe yet and wages an epic supernatural battle to protect Chicago in the thrilling and long-awaited 17th book in Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files. Check out my full review at theshortstoryteller(dot)com!
I love the Dresden Files, but this was honestly my least favorite in the series.
Once again I have enjoyed the latest edition of the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. This book takes place entirely within the context of the war between the Last Titan and the supernatural world by way of the city of Chicago and the rest of humanity. To say it is action-packed doesn’t do it justice. There are some unexpected developments with and between the characters as well that help set you up for the next book. It may be that Harry, who has changed so much during this series, will reach a point from which he cannot return. Dum, dum, dum.
I am gutted, so many loses, it is a battle. Harry’s world has changed again, and he will adjust. Mab has given us a shocker at the end, this will be entertaining at the least after the pain settles
This book starts off right where the last one ended and the action never stops. It is a non-stop adrenaline rush page after page. Harry’s sarcastic sense of humor is present throughout, even during the scenes when you would think humor was inappropriate. Through every bump, bruise and dislocated shoulder, Harry tries to keep his friends sane and unharmed. This book brings together all of the creatures Harry has fought over the years and we get to see them all work together for the first time. It’s a very uplifting scenario.
The book isn’t all peaches and cream though. There are some devastating deaths and some surprise revelations. So many emotions went through me as I read and I don’t know where I stand on the ending. I look forward to the next book to see how it all pans out. I know Jim Butcher will please all his readers one way or another. He always does.
This is by far the most action-packed, hard-hitting Dresden Files novel yet. It is nonstop from the first sentence to the final punctuation. I found myself laughing and crying. I even screamed, “Don’t you dare!” when a certain character of mine goes down. There are some truly gut-wrenching moments, but it is still balanced with the shape whit we have all come to expect from Bucher’s writing. Satisfying in every way while leaving you begging for more.
I’m still desperately in love with Harry Desden, even though halfway through the book I almost threw it across the room. But I stayed with the building tension throughout the story and was rewarded with a satisfying end (as much as Harry can have a satisfying end…). If you haven’t indulged in this series, I can’t recommend it strong enough. Get it and escape the troubles of this confusing world and become a part of an even more confusing one!
The peace talks went so well, it’s all out war. Strap in, Dresden fans, this one’s a doozy!
