A hot contemporary romance from the author of the acclaimed I-Team series… runs into Austin Taylor, her first boyfriend and her first heartbreak. She’s determined to show him she’s over him—until he steps out of a pickup truck and back into her life, looking sexy as hell in his mountain ranger uniform.
As far as Austin is concerned, Lexi can turn her snazzy little convertible around and drive back to Chicago. After all, she ripped his teenage heart to pieces and turned her back on the town he loves. But from the moment he sees her again, he can’t get her out of his mind. Even her smile messes with his head.
When an evening of conversation turns into something else, Lexi and Austin agree to be friends—with benefits. But as Lexi starts making plans to return to the big city, Austin realizes he’ll lose her a second time unless he can show her that what she’s searching for has been right here all along.

I love all things Pamela Clare and this one was no exception. She always delivers detailed and interesting stories with lovable, bad ass alpha males. I am a huge fan of her I-Team series and the guys in it….and I loved that she had 2 of them in this book. I love when an author does that and the I-Team guys “stole the show” in their books….if you read them then you know exactly what I am saying.
Austin and Lexi were each others first loves in high school, but out of fear and anger they broke up right before college. They both had a tough time dealing with the loss, so out of stubbornness and just plain age they did not reconnect. Fast forward 12 years and Lexi is back in town trying to help her ungrateful dad and step mom, but within a few days she and Austin pick right back up. These 2 are truly like 1…honestly, I am shocked they could ever stay away from each other…the relationship is hot but sweet and thoughtful, so in sync with each other….truly soul mates.
We get some humor and suspense in this book, which we always get from Pamela Clare books, which is one thing I really love about her books…..realistic suspense with a side of humor. She goes out of her way to write realistic scenarios in her stories. Scenarios you can relate too and possibly identify with but keeping things light, so that you are not panicked and close to tears.
If you love a great romance with a side of suspense and humor…then her books are for you. Loving this series so far….psst, I am reading the next book now, Slow Burn, …love it too.
Barely Breathing by Pamela Clare
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance with little sprinkles of Suspense, especially towards the end.
3.75 Stars
Notes;
Pacing was the biggest problem for this story.
Areas that would’ve helped the reader connect to the characters were glossed over while….
Areas that were about ‘Nothing Much’ was given to much attention.
I didn’t find any editing errors.
The adult intimate scenes were,
Dare I say it,
‘Cute’, occasionally humorous and possibly the best part of this story.
Could have been a great read, but for me it was boring and way to slow.
There is a scene close to the end that almost made up for it.
Unfortunately it was ‘too little too late’ for me.

A bit predictable. But still an enjoyable story. And even though I’m giving it 4 out of 5, I still want to read the rest of the books in the series. Definitely steamy, super easy to read and I didn’t want to put it down.
4.5 Stars. This was my first book by this author but it won’t be my last! Pamela Clare is known for her Romaric suspense and this is her contemporary series. The rock climbing / mountain rescue was right up my alley and still gives a bit of that suspense feel within the contemporary writing. Everything about this book worked for me. The writing, the setting, the supporting cast, the couple, the steamy scenes. I cannot wait to read more in the series!
Really enjoyed the read!! Loved it and highly recommended!!
I liked it. Worth the time to read it!
A little sweet. A little steam. A little bit of adventure. I loved the spunk of Lexi and the strength that was given to her character. Good strong female!
It was an easy, quick read. The author could have given Lexi more depth by expanding on why she left Chicago, getting her accounting business started or giving her media coverage for the forensic accounting with the department. There could have been media coverage during her rescue. I liked the closeness of the group. The problems between Dad and Step-mom were realistic. The title didn’t seem to match the story, unless, after she fell thru the floor of the cave, she Was barely breathing due to her injuries, or the hero, Austin, had to be barely breathing when he saw the dangerous situation she was in. The cover does nothing or me. The story is just weak.
Different premise than most romance, rock climbing. Fun characters, but no surprises.
Great story with some twists and turns, always hoping for a happy ending. Great way to show how struggles can end positively.
Lexie lives in Chicago and works for an accountant firm. When she filed a sexual harassment suit against one of her bosses, she goes back to her hometown in Colorado. Also her dad and stepmother owns an inn and her stepmother left and her father stays drunk. Austin is a volunteer SAR and is a park ranger. He and Lexie dated in high school but when she left after high school she broke his heart but he also broke her heart. She helps the Team find out how much was embezzled out of their accounts. While she’s there her and Austin decide to become friends with benefits. They know their time is limited so they spend as much time together. But what neither expects is to fall in love again. I loved the characters, storyline and the little bit of suspense. It’s funny, sad, and extremely sexy.
Wonderful
Awesome Awesome book Should be a 6 star book.
Read: 7/8/19
Barely Breathing was the first book in the Colorado High Country series by Pamela Clare. It was a second chance romance and my first book by the author. I’m a sucker for second chances and this was no exception.
Lexi Jewell and Austin Taylor were high school sweethearts in the small mountainous town of Scarlet Springs, CO. They were each other’s first in everything and thought they had a forever love. They ended abruptly and Lexi left for college, moved to Chicago and never looked back. Fast forward twelve years and Lexi was back in Scarlet Springs briefly to help her father. Austin was now a Park Ranger, Paramedic and a Rocky Mountain Search and Rescue team member. With the small town, their paths were doomed to cross, and they did.
I loved the storyline as well as both main characters. It was well written with a double POV and had a suspenseful vibe, which provided additional depth and dimension. Clare also expertly provided details from the Rocky Mountain Search and Rescue team, providing even more depth and intrigue. And lastly, I loved the supporting cast of characters. The stage was set for an outstanding series.
I didn’t care for the secondary story involving Lexi’s father, step mother and sister – none of the three had positive attributes. With that said, I ultimately enjoyed how Clare came full circle bringing healing and resolution. So my advice, stay with it and it will be worth it in the end.
All in all, I was hooked from the first to the last and I loved every moment. Did I say I was a sucker for second chances? Yea, a total goner. Next up is Eric Hawke in Slow Burn and I’m already in love…so bring it on!
It was interesting to learn about climbing.
Wonderful tale of first love and maturing to live the life you’re meant to have.
I loved it! A great read with romance & sexy passion! I read it in two nights. I couldn’t put it down!
Did not like the sex bondage.
A good book written by a Colorado author. If you enjoy my stuff, you’ll probably like this series.
Second Chances
When Lexi comes home to help her and step mom figure out their problems she runs into her first love Taylor. The one person she didn’t want to run into. Boy do things what up.
