Trace Bancroft has been in prison for fourteen years paying for a mistake that cost a man his life. Now released, Trace heads back to Bitter Bark with his mutt, Meatball, and runs into Daniel Kilcannon, who offers to provide some medical care for the dog. Trace knows that would mean seeing Molly Kilcannon, a girl who shared one crazy night with him before his life took a turn for the worst. But … But when Meatball’s illness intensifies, Trace has no choice. He has to face Molly again, and pray she’ll save his dog, no matter what their history.
When Trace Bancroft arrives at Waterford Farm with a critically ill dog, Molly Kilcannon’s entire world is rocked to the core. Firmly believing Trace died in a bar fight years ago, Molly never told anyone that the bad boy of Bitter Bark was the father of Prudence Kilcannon, her very good thirteen-year-old daughter. But Molly has promised to tell Pru the truth about her conception, and now that truth is a living, breathing ex-con whose very existence could change everything, including a precious mother-daughter relationship.
It doesn’t take long for Molly to realize there’s more to this sexy man than his dark past and tattooed arms. And while the realization that he’s a father is the best thing to ever happen to him, Trace doubts anything could make him worthy of Pru or her spirited veterinarian mother. As they nurse Meatball back to health and grow ever closer, Trace and Molly have to decide when and how to tell Pru the truth. But will the secret that binds their hearts be the very thing that breaks them apart?

This is the fourth book in the Dogfather series and hands down my favorite! The others are fun, they are entertaining, but this one has that extra something special. I could actually see something like this happening in real life. It would be bizarre and not likely, but it could definitely happen. Life is not fair and boy, is it not fair to Trace Bancroft. How he handles setbacks is amazing. Is he perfect? Nope. But he tries! Molly? She’s so much more than you see from glimpses of her in the other books in this series. She truly is the glue for the Kilcannon family. It is heartwarming to experience the very special relationship that Molly and the Dogfather have. Like the others, Bad to the Bone is pure entertainment, but it will have you railing at and thinking about, the unfairness of life and the spitefulness and vileness in people. Well done, Ms. St. Claire!
Another great book by Roxanne St Claire. They are always so uplifting and enjoyable to read. All the characters both 4 legged and 2 are great
I enjoyed this book.
great series
loved the whole series
This was such fun to read. Loved the way the characters are well developed alongside their dogs and absolutely adored the developing relationship between the two MCs. I couldn’t put it down.
The plot and story are delightful
Light relaxing book – easy reading
Another great addition to the dogcatcher series. It’s a great story with realistic characters. A bit of romance but not too steamy! Recommend this series.
Molly was a single Mom. Pru was asking about her father. Molly felt she needed to tell her the truth. Believing Lance was dead she was going to take Pru on a trip so that they could talk it out. Her Dad started talking about a man he met that had been trained to train service dogs while in prison. There ,was a knock on the door and Lance had brought out his very sick dog. Molly did emergency surgery. Lance realized that night that Pru was his daughter. He didn’t want Molly to tell her. But when Molly refused he wanted her to wait until.Pru had a chance to know him. Just as it looked like things were getting straightened out disaster hit.
I loved this story! I wasn’t aware when I made my purchase that I was picking up a book in the middle of Roxanne’s Dogfather series. I enjoyed Bad to the Bone so much that now I’m reading book 1 in the series. If you love stories about big families and you love second chances and you love dogs, Bad to the Bone is a must-read.
More complex than I expected (in a good way). Love all the characters, good pace, strong plots and character development.
It is a nice easy read. Great for beach or an airport read. Nothing serious but uplifting…..
I didn’t read the first of the series but I now plan to fill in the blanks. I enjoyed the characters, however I think they should have told the big news sooner.
Yea for dogs (and all animals) and the great people who care for them. Love this series! I have loved all our shelter dogs and the joy they have brought to our lives.
