Andrew Yancy—late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office—has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health … Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing). But first—this being Hiaasen country—Yancy must negotiate an obstacle course of wildly unpredictable events with a crew of even more wildly unpredictable characters, including his just-ex lover, a hot-blooded fugitive from Kansas; the twitchy widow of the frozen arm; two avariciously optimistic real-estate speculators; the Bahamian voodoo witch known as the Dragon Queen, whose suitors are blinded unto death by her peculiar charms; Yancy’s new true love, a kinky coroner; and the eponymous bad monkey, who with hilarious aplomb earns his place among Carl Hiaasen’s greatest characters.
Here is Hiaasen doing what he does better than anyone else: spinning a tale at once fiercely pointed and wickedly funny in which the greedy, the corrupt, and the degraders of what’s left of pristine Florida—now, of the Bahamas as well—get their comeuppance in mordantly ingenious, diabolically entertaining fashion.

Carl Hiaasen rarely disappoints. Weird characters, twisted plots, and lots of fun.

Hiaasen at his best (always a good read ).
Action packed thriller that is also hilarious. I enjoyed this one more than most I have read lately.
I just didn’t “get” this book. I did not like the characters or the plot and gave up on it after the first several chapters.
Easy summer read. Not plausible, but entertaining.
Carl Hiaasen always delivers laugh out loud stories populated by quirky characters.
Great Read, the characters are well written and the story just keeps moving and getting more and more interesting. A laugh out loud twisting tale!
Another gem containing its share of laugh-out-loud moments from the always-reliable Hiaasen.
one of his best.
Andrew Yancy gets demoted from detective to roach patrol for attacking a tourist in Mallory Square, Key West, as only a Carl Hiaasen attack can be described. However, that doesn’t stop him from digging into a case that begins when another tourist pulls a severed left arm from the Atlantic Ocean. What ensues is a good, light-hearted mystery with the great wit of Carl Hiaasen’s mind. Bouncing back and forth between Andros Island, Key West, and Miami, we learn a little here and a little there. Andrew eventually figures it all out, but the ending is unique.
Our cast of characters includes a voodoo lady, a monstrous bodyguard who doesn’t like the heat of the Bahamas, a local fisherman trying to reclaim his home, an enthusiastic realtor trying to sell a mansion, a spoiled single child, and bad-tempered monkey that could have been in the movies with Johnny Depp.
Hiaasen at his most twisted. Fun, fast read with some terrific surprises. The monkey is indeed bad…
Laugh out loud funny
Better than the movies
Absolutely HILARIOUS!! Not only “vintage” Carl Hiaasen but one of his very best. I couldn’t put the book down and was sad when I finished it…I wanted it to go on, and on, and on…..
Every book by this author is worth reading-and GREAT FUN!
You have to love Hiassen. His stories are witty and entertaining and his characters are quirky and multi-dimensional. Like Elmore Leonard, who also wrote books similar in sub-genre, Hiassen writes books that you can’t put down.
Carl Hiassen at his best. A total laugh riot set in Florida vationland.
if you’re the type who liked fear and loathing in las vegas, this one’s for you. a cast of unlikely characters characters brought to life with the precision of a surgeon. great storyline that rolls right on through to the end. bet you can’t just read this, one.
