Back to Lazarus is the first book in the Sydney Brennan Mysteries series. (See below for reading order.) If you like strong heroines and gut-wrenching twists and turns, with occasional snarky profanity, then you’ll love Judy K. Walker’s gripping novel.

It delights me when I discover a new mystery series that’s well written and of a type I particularly enjoy. In Back to Lazarus, author Judy K. Walker introduces Tallahassee private eye Sydney Brennan, a character who, along with others in the book, has dimension as well as flaws.
Syd is hired to determine why a man in prison for killing his wife twenty years earlier has recently committed suicide. She soon discovers discrepancies in her client’s story, and missing documents in the official records.
When she persists in her investigation, Syd is kidnapped and assaulted on a lonely country road by masked men in two pickups. Despite injuries, a blow-up with her client, and witnesses too terrified to talk, she presses on in best P.I. fashion. I look forward to another outing with Sydney.
Loved it, thank you BookBub! I’ve now read all books in the series. Author and main character remind me of Nelson DeMille, who I love!
Catches your attention from the start, Sydney is determined to do what her client hires her to do find out the truth. No matter what happens she doesn’t let it deter her from doing her job. Action filled story.
Fast-paced, well-written, excellent characterizations. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was the believability factor in a couple of scenes. It took me a couple of chapters to get into it, but once I did, I liked the writing (and I’m pretty picky), it kept me reading and likely will sign up for the next of Sydney’s adventures.
What a breath of fresh air! Sydney Brennan, PI. created by Judy K. Walker is like no other. Sydney is a she with a most refreshing personality, thinking and saying the darndest things that made me smile or laugh out loud (fuzzy toilet lid cover). As a PI, she refused to stop her investigation, was kidnapped and beaten, recovered, went back to uncover the truth for her client. A must read for PI fans and mystery lovers. Ms. Walker’s original writing style added a freshness to a tragic tale. A great goodread
The book started off kind of slow but picked up speed after the 2nd chapter. Would like to read another book by this author.
Once I started reading, it was difficult to put the book down! I wanted to keep finding out what happened next!
A great book. It was hard to put down and kept my interest to the end.
Good story.
I always enjoy a mystery. This was a good one.
The characters’ thought processes are realistic and reflect much of what I may have said in similar situations. The author took me through this investigation without giving hints to bring suspects into the story. Usually, I can predict what happens but this is an exception for me. I was a bit disappointed toward the end that the character didn’t show caution given her prior encounter but it brought the story to a conclusion. I enjoyed the journey.
I found the story difficult to get into at first. Once I was able to see the flow it was easier to read.
Enjoyed the characters and the plot very much.
Keep you thinking. I would read more of this Author
I really enjoyed this book and didn’t wait long for the next book in the series. Great chatacter development.
Back to Lazarus a real original. So many twists and turn and you never know what’s going to happen next. The main character is a real fighter and she does a good job of trying to get to the truth. This is a must read!
The characters are so real and the twists in the story keep you reading til the end. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Very good read-page turner and exciting!
I want to read more about Syd’s adventures. Interesting intrigue among the main characters. I like that Syd is a strong, self-reliant woman. I hope some of these characters are in the other books in the series.
Judy K. Walker is an “Indie” writer, but she is great. The characters were real, and Sydney Brennan is an investigator with guts and ideas. Her ability to outsmart the bad guys is unbelievable, even when she gets caught in the crossfire.
I found Back to Lazarus a delightful read in spite of the tough guys, and truly enjoyed reading it every night. I found it difficult to put down and go to bed
