Before Thanksgiving, Margaret finds the body of Mr. Stewart, a gruff but kind dog groomer. Although their relationship has changed, Margaret calls David and they work to find the truth. I especially liked the way Margaret is learning new things about herself, her now adult son, and their changing relationship.

I’m so glad that after reading this book, I was able to fill in the blanks for questions that have lingered. Each new book in this series has more suspense than the last. Margaret is a good character to lead the series. She has showed that she did not have to have a leading man in her life in order to feel accomplished. She did that on her own. Such empowerment. Having a significant other is just a bonus.

My eyes are tearing up from this installment! It was so heartwarming. It killed me when the person in this book was murdered. Never for a second did I see it coming. The murderer, yes, but who was murdered…nope. Margret is learning so much about the people around her, the many layers that make up all of all those she calls family and friend. This was the perfect Thanksgiving cozy!

This is Book #5 in the Sweet Shop Mystery series. Margaret Nichols and her adult son, Zachary, are partners in the candy store. Margaret has now hired an employee, Patty Matthews, to help with the store. Margaret and Zach see Mr. Stewart, the dog groomer, at the animal shelter carrying in a 100# bag of dog food and grooming the dogs to help them get adopted. Margaret also sees Mr. Stewart placing money in tip jars around town. He also has been feeding the stray dogs and cats in the alley behind his grooming shop to the annoyance of Maria who has the nail salon next door. Everyone in town thinks Mr. Stewart is just an old cranky curmudgeon. However, Margaret and Zach see another layer of him. Zach compares him to a “gobstopper”.
When Maria finds Mr. Stewart dead in the alley Margaret calls Detective David Graham to investigate. Margaret and David are no longer in a relationship because David recently discovered he had a daughter, Ariel. He has been spending a lot of time with her and is having trouble finding what he should be doing as a parent. David does, however, ask Margare to assist in the investigation. There are several people who have argued with Mr. Stewart and are now suspects.
Margaret and David are both learning more about themselves and each other. David wants to have Thanksgiving with his daughter but doesn’t know how to cook. Margaret agrees to fix Thanksgiving dinner for David, Ariel, Zach and his new girlfriend, Gilly Hawthorne and Patty.
Wendy has managed to have a little romance, a little self awareness, a little about parenting and a murder.
If you like cozy mysteries, you will like this series.

Getting back to basics
This continuation of the Sweet Shop Mystery Series shows how Margaret is growing as a PI, as a mother, a friend and a person. Her deep insights into herself and her world around her made me do a bit of evaluating my own life as well. Books can be wonderful and entertaining, but how awesome that they help us grow along this journey called life as well. Another great read by a great author.

It only takes about two hours for this family-friendly tale about making the world a better place, the tribulations of parenting, and the importance of Thanksgiving.

This was a good addition to the series. Margaret and David are back on the case as Mr. Stewart is murdered. This leads Margaret to a lot of introspection about people and how they appear. Mr. Stewart wasn’t as much of a curmudgeon as she believed. So is everybody hiding something? Are any of us presenting our true self? When she learns that her son, Zack, is keeping things from her she starts imagining the worst. Her reaction was a little over the top but it all ends well. Overall, a little different than usual but still a good mystery with good characters.

BACK ON SWEETS is the 5th installment in the Sweet Shop Mystery series and is an enjoyable afternoon read. Like all of the author’s books, there is a great blending of murder and suspense with a touch of humor. Don’t worry if you haven’t read any of this series, it is easy to jump right into the story and get to know these well developed characters.
Margaret owns the Sweet Shop and her son Zach helps her run it. A long time business owner has been murdered. It’s not going to be easy finding the murderer. It seems almost the entire town has strong feelings about the victim. Throughout the investigation Margaret and David are working through their breakup and future relationship. Just to overload her senses, her son appears to be keeping secrets from her.

I love this series. In this one Margaret is back in the middle of another murder. In this case, it was the cranky dog groomer. While he is cranky she can’t think of any reason someone would kill him. While trying to find the killer, she also has to figure out what is going on with her son Zach

nother cute cozy mystery by Wendy Meadows.
Margaret and David work together again to solve the murder of her friend Mr. Stewart. Along the way they discover new truths about each other and those they love.
This newest book has a nice plot, suitable twists and a touch of romance. I am glad Margaret and David are reevaluating their romantic relationship.
However, I am having difficulty with with Margaret’s relationship with her son. I felt in book four her reactions were extreme and cloying in many respects. But as I had not read books one and two, maybe that level of concern was warranted? But in this book, the over the top emotions Margaret feels when he ventures out with friends is just creepy. And the conclusions she jumps to regarding his moral character? Does she know her son at all?
This is the reason I most likely will not read further books in this series. Which is a shame because Wendy Meadows is a good author and her Alaska series has been superb!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Do you judge a book by its cover? How about people? Think about it!!!
Margaret sees someone she knows and that person is acting out of character to her. As usual she has to help solve that mystery. She also has to figure out what is up with Zack and David? What about herself?
I know that I will miss the victim in future books.
Are people only what you see? Could there be another aspect to them that you know nothing about? These are questions to ask to get the moral of the story.
Hard to believe that this is book 5 in this series. Book can easily be read by itself, but go back and catch up so you can follow the character growth. Worth it!!!
Fast, fun, easy to read cozy mystery.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
