But in the wake of a devastating attack perpetrated by a young Hero that took the powers of all the active Chosen, Matt’s powers suddenly returned!
With no other choice, Matt goes to the one man who might understand what is happening to him – Colton Stephens. The former Hero was Matt’s main rival back in the days of his fighting career. A man Matt hasn’t seen since the day he burned out and walked away from the fights.
That would be complicated enough. But back then, they were also secret lovers. Matt walked away from their relationship without so much as a simple goodbye.
After nearly twenty-five years, these two men are coming face to face for the first time. Can they handle their personal issues while trying to save the world from a Hero gone bad?
Trigger warnings for dub/noncon, super tragic backstories, explicit on page sex, angsty gays, and cliffhangers.
The Burn Outs series is meant to be read in order and are not stand-alone books.

This was a very interesting take on superheroes. In this world, those chosen to be Heroes and Villains are much like pro wrestling, everything is not as it appears. Matt (Hammer) was once a Villain who was in a relationship with Colton (Mythos) until he burned out and lost his powers. At that point, Matt abandoned Colton and the world of the Chosen. Now the men are in their fifties, and their powers come back as former Hero Leo (Blue Bolt) returns to shake up the world.
There are moments in this story that really disturb me, but my interest never wavered. This is only episode one, so I’m not sure what will happen. Is Blue Bolt truly evil, or are his intentions truly for good? His manipulating talents lead to some horrible things, but I’m still not sure of his ultimate goals. Other than my intense need to see Colton safe, I also have a deep sympathy for a couple of other characters here. I am fascinated by this universe, and I will have to read the next installment to learn more.
If you enjoy superheroes and supervillains, and you don’t mind lots of kinky sex, this might be the series for you. I’m definitely ready for more!
This is the first book I’d ever read written by Dani Hermit and Nevi Star and i would like to tell you why I decided to read it after receiving it as an ARC and why I gave it 5 stars. First of all, the book is about one of my favorite topics ever and I can brag that I’ve read almost every series written about superheros, not just comics, so the first thing that attracted my attention was the topic. This is a totally classic superhero story with a pretty interesting and original plot and amazing characters. But also had a twist, a MM twist that made everything even better. So, adding this to the fact that the story is about second chances, between a hero and a villain, the book kept me at the edge of my seat throughout the pages until the very end. Wonderful reading!!! I can’t wait to read book 2!!
What happens to Heroes and Villains once they “burn out”? They get older, lead different lives, loose touch with one another, until their power starts to come back. Now, it’s thirty some odd years later and a few of them that are now in their fifties, find they are in that situation. Matt “Hammer” Evans isn’t happy with his dilemma and it forces him to get back in touch with Professor Colton “Mythos“ Stephens. In fact, Matt never wanted to be a Chosen or a Villain and the past just makes it harder to see Colton again.
When Matt visits Colton for the first time in thirty years and Colton finds Matt’s power is returning, Colton get’s the idea that he can help. But Colton’s good intentions and his surrender to his kink, put him in the clutches of the evil and vile Leo “Blue Bolt”.
Thomas “Anvil” Davos was Matt’s old partner, better known as ”Hammer and Anvil”. Thomas shows Matt a video that Mythos has made and it sends Thomas and Matt on a rescue mission, before Colton really disappears. Along the way they come across Serpent Mound, fight some zombie snakes and meet Boris “Cat Boy”.
Now, there’s a whole lot more going on from there!
I have to admit, this is not what I routinely read but there’s a whole lot of weird, crazy, and fun going on in this novel. After I got the players all straightened out in my head, this became a real page-turner for me. Dani Hermit and Nevi Starr do a really good job at building this strange world with: Disk, Priests, Legacy Program, Chosen, gems, marks and more incredible ideas. They present an in-depth look into all their fantastic characters that reveal all kinds of emotions: guilt, jealousy, friendship, anger and they get into some fights too. There’s new things they learn about each other and it’s not without surprises and secrets. For those that are sensitive, just fair warning, the story is somewhat dark, there’s BDSM and kink that get’s everyone into trouble.
As fas as characters go, Matts level headed and just want’s a normal life. Colton is smart, nerdy and has a kink that leads to all kinds of trouble. Lucky for Colton, Matt knows how to keep him under control and calm. There are plenty of secondary characters that are interesting and I’m sure there will be more to come as this series continues. Two particular characters that stole the show: Thomas “Anvil” and Boris “Cat Boy” definitely get up to all kinds of high-jinks and the banter between them is hilarious.
The deeper I got into this story, my thought was, this would definitely be an interesting graphic comic or hero/villain movie, but it would definitely be X -rated. I highly recommend “Burn Out” for anyone who likes the uniqueness of heroes and villains. Dani Hermit and Nevi Star deliver an intriguing cliff-hanger at the end. As for me, I was throughly entertained with “Burn Out” and plan on following this series.
