Single dad and hockey star, Calder Weiss has put his love life on the back burner for the past five years, raising his daughter and keeping up with the demands of his profession. But all that changes the minute Rachel Perry runs into him in the most unlikely of places, right outside the men’s bathroom. Vibrant and enchanting, she captures his attention, making it impossible for him to walk away … walk away without scoring her number.
Their connection is immediate, their attraction palpable, and their relationship undeniable. But Rachel isn’t the only girl in Calder’s life which scares him, because Calder’s daughter already lost her mother. He doesn’t want Shea to lose someone close to her again, making Rachel’s task of breaking through Calder’s wall that much more difficult.

GAHHH! Calder and Rachel!
This story is classic Meghan, with sweetness, naughtiness and the dialogue is laugh out loud funny! My only wish is that it was longer! I fell in love with Meghan’s work when I read The Mother Road. Meghan has the amazing ability to pull you into her stories and make you cheer on the characters. She truly writes the perfect romantic comedy! I hope to see more of her secondary characters in books of their own! Meghan’s writing is also so smart, she really doesn’t “talk down” to the reader which I greatly appreciate! Bravo on another well written short story! Looking forward to future books from her!
PS…Love the little gift at the end! You big tease Meghan
Back in the Game is part of the Team Player anthology. I tend to not want to read anthology’s although, I know I can discover new to me authors. Anyway, I am happy that I can read any of Meghan Quinn’s books and Back in the Game is a novella.
I love the dialog that you have between Calder Weiss and Rachel.
Rachel meets Calder in front of the public restrooms after bumping into him. How she bumped into him is a mystery to me. Because I would have been staring right at him since he was dressed up with a tiara and fairy wings. Calder is a single dad to a daughter. Not sure if I would be caught dead in that outfit. Haha! And, then Calder asks Rachel out. I love the dialog between them. It’s hilarious. They both show so much personality.
Has per usual Meghan Quinn will have you laughing out loud or at least she had me LOL!
OMG! Nooooo I need One Baby Daddy!!!
This book was an enormous disappointment. After a howlingly funny beginning, it just….
ended.
Unexpectedly, abruptly, suddenly….
ended.
Quinn is a gifted writer with a talent for making the absurd natural and believable. It felt like she gave up trying exactly when I became invested in her characters.
So short, way too short.
I feel rather….
Unsatisfied.
It’s rather as though I’m wide awake in his bed. I’m trying to decide if I should stay and give him another chance in the morning or should I just stuff my panties in my purse and go home now.
AHH!!! I love me some Meghan Quinn brand of Sports Romance and Back in the Game was just that. It was exactly what I was looking for when I picked it up.
Calder and Rachel were so great together from the very first meeting and add Calder’s daughter and it was the perfect trio. This novella is was just romance and fun with zero angst making it an easy and hassle-free read for anybody who is coming out of a super angsty read.
I’m also kinda bummed that this was a novella because I could see these two characters in a full-length novel and I know for a fact that I would have loved this story even more than I already do.
If you have an hour or two to spare or looking for something light and fun with hilarious banter, don’t forget to check this one out!
4 Stars!
This sweet hockey romance novella was the perfect meet cute and fall into love that I needed.
Calder and Rachel are both so witty and don’t hold back. I think that’s why they worked so well together. They took the shots and were themselves. Making them such true characters.
Their first date, can we just talk about how darn cute that was?! *Sigh* The small conflict was something they were very easily able to overcome quickly and have the happily ever after they both deserved.
If you’re looking for a quick happy novella that you don’t HAVE to read the others in the series, I recommend this one! But it’ll make you want to read the rest too!
This book is funny, and sweet and all the things a good romance book should be. I really enjoyed it!
Quick funny read. Calder is a single dad hockey player who loves and protects his daughter at all cost. Rachel is a sassy, spunky quick witted kindergarten teacher. They hit it off right away, literally when Wanda the fairy hits Rachel with his wings. From there they are just drawn to each other. I loved the banter between the two of them and their sexy texts.
This was short, hence the novella right in the title. And I didn’t like the male narrator’s voice. And for a while I was worried we wouldn’t get one of the author’s signature steamy scenes, but we did in the end. A cute and fun addition to this series.
*3,5 stars*
I liked this short read and it was a good sports novella about a single dad trying to get back into dating after being burned in his previous relationship. I wished this book was a bit longer as I missed a bit more depth but it was a good read!
When Calder takes his daughter out and meets Rachel, there’s something about her that instantly attracts him to her. They start to date and their relationship evolves but Calder keeps her at a distance. He has never introduced anyone to his daughter and is afraid she’ll get too attached. But there’s something between them that he can’t seem to deny. Will he finally take a risk or will he lose the one woman he’s falling deeply for?…
This was a really cute novella! I could have read more from these characters. I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars. This review is for an ARC, and reflects my honest opinion.
I liked Calder a lot; he’s an amazing single dad, and him being a hockey player is icing on top of the [beef]cake. Haha. But seriously, I’ve loved the single parent romances I’ve read lately, and the addition of sports is always a plus. Rachel was pretty great too.
I liked that we were able to see both POVs. It allowed us to see what a sweetheart Calder was, and also see Rachel’s side of the romance. This was short and sweet, and I think anyone who likes single parent and/or sports romance books will enjoy this.
I felt like the plot was a little rushed, but since it’s a novella, there’s only so many pages to work with. I highly recommend you check out Meghan Quinn’s books; I haven’t been disappointed yet!
I loved this novella. Calder being a single dad and a professional hockey player was definitely a different perspective. I love that this book was about his dedication to being a father and trying to get back into the dating game the ‘right’ way. Meghan once again wrote a laugh out loud story with all the warm fuzzier and feels. I just wish I would have read it when I originally downloaded it and not wait until I read Hayden’s story One Baby Daddy. I loved it!
Loved , loved loved this book. I first read it back in the Team Player anthology . It was my favorite out of all of them. I love the Rachel and Calder . The way they laugh and can still be serious . Also Shea is great . I don’t know how Meghan writes such amazing books one right after the other but man do I love reading them .
This was a very cute and hilarious novella. I really loved Calder, who is Hayden’s teammate from Three Blind Dates. He was so funny and he met his match with Rachel, a school teacher. She was quirky and oh so cute. Their dates were romantic, the banter had me laughing, and Calder and Rachel together was oh so sexy. I really enjoyed Back in the Game and I only wish it was longer because I couldn’t get enough.
NO SPOILERS!
Back in the Game was absolutely AMAZING and I loved it with all of my heart! It was a sweet, sexy, funny, and highly entertaining standalone sports romance novella, and I absolutely adored everything about it from beginning to end. The storyline and characters were phenomenal, and I loved Meghan Quinn’s writing style and awesome sense of humor. I’ve been a huge fan of Meghan Quinn for a while now, and she completely blew me away with Calder and Rachel’s story. Back in the Game has been one of my favorite books from her so far, and definitely the best novella that I’ve ever read!
Calder and Rachel were amazing and I honestly loved them and their story with all of my heart and soul. I loved their personalities and red-hot chemistry together, and how their relationship progressed throughout. I loved reading the book from both Calder and Rachel’s POV, and all of their banter and interactions with each other. Calder was sexy, charming, a total sweetheart, and a good man. He was absolutely perfect and I loved him dearly. Rachel was sweet, witty, and sassy, and I also loved her dearly. Calder and Rachel have definitely been two of my favorite Meghan Quinn characters so far, and I absolutely loved every single moment of their story. Calder’s five-year-old daughter, Shea, was adorable, and I loved all of the other secondary characters as well. I was very happy with the conclusion to Calder and Rachel’s story, and I loved the sneak peek of One Baby Daddy at the end!
Back in the Game was a sexy, entertaining, and humorous standalone sports romance novella, and I would HIGHLY recommend it and all of Meghan Quinn’s books! Meghan Quinn did an amazing job with this book, and I was super pleased with the outcome to Calder and Rachel’s story. I am head over heels in love with Meghan Quinn and her books, and I am so excited to devour more of her stories, especially One Baby Daddy!
Calder Weiss is a man with many talents, ace ice hockey star, dedicated single father to a five year old princess who has him tightly wound around her little finger, and well he has some other “talents” too, but he hasn’t had much free time to dabble in those. But when he casually bumps into a devastatingly gorgeous woman in a donut shop he can’t help but want to make a little time put those talents to good use!
Back in the Game is a sexy little tale that is sure to have romance readers swooning from start to finish, the moment you meet Mr. Weiss you’ll be smitten!! I thoroughly enjoyed this one, it was riddled with humor, heat, and loads of heart… I mean what is not to love about a sexy single father, that also happens to be a hockey star! Highly recommend this one, as soon as your eyes land on the first page you will be hooked!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.
***5 ‘Fairies for the Win’ Stars***
The first time I read Back in the Game (Team Player Anthology) I had noted down just how much fun it was to read. It had a good dose of smexy, some great single parent swooniness and whole bunch of flirty and laugh out loud bantering. And the same held true the second time around. It’s a fun, quick read with just the right amount of smexy, swoony mixed in to keep things interesting.
I fell into full on adoration of Calder from the opening paragraph. I mean, how can you not love a man who will morph into “Wanda” for his little girl? You can’t. But outside of being an amazing father, he’s a really good man. He’s that endearing mix of alpha and vulnerable that just makes you melt. Rachel is sassy and has quite a bit of moxie and I love how quick her mind is. The things she came up with had me crushing on her hard.
Though things happened quite quickly between them, it didn’t bother me in the least and a lot of it had to do with just how well their personalities matched and flowed together. There was no holding back and they fed off of each other’s quirks and energy in the best of ways. Their road was pretty easy, but the little road block they faced was dealt with well.
Not to sound like a broken record *smirk* but this was just a fun read. So if you’re looking for a quick, sports romcom then this is a definite must read!

Back in the Game had my heart. A hot single amazing dad and fantastic heroine, a little girl that I wanted to adopt, humor, and steamy good times. There is something about Meghan’s writing style that speaks to me. She could write a restaurant menu at a steakhouse and I swear I would by everything on it (which is impressive since I don’t eat red meat). I am not sure there is anything that this woman cannot write. She is my go to RomCom author. I wish this was a full length story.

If you love Meghan Quinn, you will definitely love Back in the Game. It is a quick, fun, hilarious, sexy, and entertaining novella! I just loved Calder from the beginning, as how can you not fall in love with a hot, single dad hockey player who is willing to dress up like a fairy for his daughter….in public. Yep, he’s a keeper. Hoping we get to see Calder & Rachel again when we get Hayden’s story!
Rachel and Calder will make you blush, melt your heart, and laugh long and loud oj their way to forever. Rachel never expected a coke zero to lead to anything more than a trip to the restroom, but when she meets a man dressed as a fairy princess for kid she knows she cannot just walk away from that. Calder is sweet, witty, funny, and hot – so of course she gives the single daddy a chance when he asks her out. Calder has been notoriously careful when it comes to women since Shea’s mom turned out to be such a flake. When he meets Rachel and has such an instaconnect with her he knows he needs to see where will go. She is the type of woman that he could see building a life with but first he will need to be sure before he can risk letting Shea get attached.
I first read Back In the Game by Meghan Quinn in the Team Player Anthology and it was absolutely my favorite novella out of the group. Her writing always sucks me in and her character development has me falling for every character, hard and fast. I absolutely love Calder and Rachel. Their banter back and forth had me belly laughing and I couldn’t get enough of their texts. I mean….”prickly penis”….HAHAHA. Enough said. I really found myself wishing this was a full on novel rather than a novella because I couldn’t get enough of them. Plus, Shea stole my heart as well.
