It’s spring in Pawpaw County, Indiana, and everybody has a bad case of hanky-panky pants. Senior sleuths Ruby Jane Waskom (RJ) and Veenie Goens are on the run, chasing down cheating heart jezebels and shaking child support out of deadbeat daddies. After Avonelle Apple’s husband, William, the esteemed town dentist, passes away, she receives a child support letter from a self-proclaimed mistress. … mistress. Suspicious, she hires the Shady Hoosier Detective Agency, to determine if her late husband was a philandering baby daddy. The case seems simple until Avonelle’s son, Bromley, heir to his father’s dental empire, and well-known King of the Pawpaw County Hanky-Panky Pants Club, pops up dead in a scarecrow costume. The mounting romantic mysteries come to a surprise head as the senior sleuths outrun shotgun showers to close in on the answers at the Moon Glo Motor Lodge, the Original Home of Hillbilly Hanky Panky. Veenie and RJ have to buy an extra case of Bengay and a buttload of BBs just to keep up with the romantic misadventures in this humorous crime classic.

Baby Daddy Mystery: Shady Hoosier Detective Agency (Book 2)
(Shady Hoosier Detective Agency #2) by Daisy Pettles is hilarious! (Come on, even her writer’s name is clever!)
This is book two in the series and is just as funny as book one. This one starts out chasing down who is the real baby daddy, then a murderer, a blackmailer, and then even more! It is non-stop craziness with the zany and colorful characters, plot, and hilarious situations the two aged women get into investigating crimes or getting clues. It has plenty of humor, wit, and action to keep me going through the book and before I know it I am finished! Now I have to wait for the next book! Ugh!
The Baby Daddy Mystery is the second book in the Shady Hoosier Detective Agency Mystery series and is just as much fun as the first one.
Ruby Jane, RJ, and Veenie are such a hoot and made me laugh and giggle while they are investigating the request for child support that Avonelle Ollis, the bank president, receives when her husband passes away. But of course we also get our share of murder…..and watching the two older ladies nosying their way to the solution of the mystery is a real treat.
This mystery can be read as a stand alone but there is so much fun to be had, why not read the whole series. I can’t wait for the next installment to be come available. RJ and Veenie are the newest addition to my favourite must read series.
I requested this book from NetGalley and am thankful that Hot Pants Press and the author provided me with an advance copy.
The big question is In the title- who is the Baby’s Daddy? I kept changing my mind and was wondering until the end! This second part in the Shady Hoosiers Detective series is better than the first. I want Ruby Jane and Veenie as friends- smart, great sense of humor and lovers of junk food! Although I am not from a town like Knobby Waters I felt like I belonged. Daisy Pettles is a fantastic story teller and I can imagine sitting on a porch swing listening to her tell the tales of this small town. She sprinkled in humor with intelligence and teased me with whispers of the next book. Plus this reminds me of a cross between ‘Murder She Wrote’ and ‘The Andy Griffith show’. I love it and love sitting down, hunkering under the covers and reading it with a cat on my lap- that’s my perfect day!

Another Laugh Your Sox Off cozy mystery from Pawpaw County, Indiana. It seems like almost every male in the area is a philandering fool, and we won’t even get into a discussion about the women. But it seems that only the males are the ones getting dead which makes a lot of work and laughter for our favorite senior sleuthing team of Ruby Jane and Veenie. No spoilers needed, and the characters certainly are which you can tell from the publisher’s blurb. If you need some howling good laughs in a mystery with a plot, this is the place!
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Hot Pants Press via NetGalley. Thank you!
I was lucky enough to read a pre-release copy of this 2nd Shady Hoosier book – Baby Daddy Mystery.
Our favorite senior sleuths, RJ and Veenie, are drafted back into action by the local town bank owner, Avonelle Apple. Seems Avonelle’s late husband might have been fooling around and left a few offspring that fell a little further away from the Apple tree, and Avonelle has gotten a letter requesting child support payments! Right around the same time, RJ’s daughter Joyce is in emoji hysteria ‘cos she thinks her hubby is having an affair. Then, of course, there’s good old Harry Shades who is hankying just about everyone’s panky. If that’s not enough, one of Avonelle’s twin sons (both dentists, like their dad – that’s the tooth, the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth!) is found dressed up as a scarecrow and dead as a doornail.
Veenie and RJ will unpuzzle these puzzles, and keep you laughing as they do it. These gal pals are the brightest sunshine in Pawpaw county, for sure.
I read BOOK 1 in this new series and fell in love with this quirky little Indiana town — Knobby Waters — and the characters who live there. Two old ladies take jobs to supplement their social security — they need ”twinkie money,” and get into all sorts of messes. The language is fresh and colorful, and the characters so vivid they pop off the pages. If you love porch stories and rural life as it’s lived with wit and humor you’ll enjoy rattling around in the 60’s Chevy the old gals drive hunting for cheatin’ husbands and wayward boyfriends, Absolutely hilarious and fresh new series loaded with laughs and very unusual “get it done’ old ladies. This is ought to be a TV series. VERY ORIGINAL.
I’m 60 years old and love both humor and mysteries but have been disappointed that most “senior sleuth” books feature old grandmas who knit and make tea. Boy, oh boy, that is NOT this book. This series is very witty — think the Golden Girls move to Mayberry. What wonderful characters. Ruby Jane and her best gal pal Veenie have been lifelong friends and in this book work as junior detectives at a minimum wage job for an incompetent womanizing boss in rural Indiana (been there — done that, ladies). I laughed so hard at the antics these two got into and clapped wildly when they uncovered the mystery of the baby daddy in this wildly wacky small town. Go get em gals! A real winner of a series if you like to laugh and are tired of stereotypical old lady detectives who drink tea.
Ruby Jane “RJ” Waskom and Lavinia “Veenie” Goens are left to run the Shady Hoosier Detective Agency after their boss, Harry Shades, took off. They have their hands full staying clear of Shap Reynolds, who is after Harry.
Avonelle Apple, Knobby Waters bank president, comes in to appeal RJ and Veenie to look into a matter of one Ms Barbara Skaggs claiming Avonelle’s deceased husband is the father of her three children. While RJ and Veenie go to speak with Barbara, they find a dead body wearing a scarecrow outfit sitting in a glider. The body belonged to one of Avonelle’s twin sons.
When Sassy, RJ and Veenie’s boarder, called to tell them she was in jail for murder, but claims she’s innocent. They agree to take on her case.
RJ and Veenie find themselves up to their elbows in cases, including RJ’s daughter, Joyce, who thinks her husband, Rusty is cheating on her. RJ and Veenie have a lot of loose ends all pointing in one direction and they need that smoking gun.
This is the second book in the series! Veenie is a hoot, and just as brassy as ever. If you enjoy humor, mystery and two elderly detectives full of spunk, then you’ll enjoy this series.
I received an ARC from NetGalley via Hot Pants Press, LLC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I liked the blurb for Baby Daddy Mystery and I couldn’t wait to read this cozy mystery. With senior sleuths and “hanky-panky pants” it sounded like a fun read. And it really was funny to watch these two elderly women solve murders, find baby daddies and blackmailers. During their investigations, I expected it to be hard for them to be objective since they knew everyone in town. But that just made it easier for them. They knew that many of them couldn’t keep their pants zipped or their skirts down. There were times when their personal knowledge of the people had them taking a closer look and getting clues in the most unlikely places.
I liked the fun characters in Baby Daddy Mystery. They got into the funniest situations. This book will definitely appeal to humourous cozy mystery fans.
