Gary Jennings’s Aztec is the extraordinary story of the last and greatest native civilization of North America. Told in the words of one of the most robust and memorable characters in modern fiction, Mixtli-Dark Cloud, Aztec reveals the very depths of Aztec civilization from the peak and feather-banner splendor of the Aztec Capital of Tenochtitlan to the arrival of Hernan Cortas and his … Cortas and his conquistadores, and their destruction of the Aztec empire. The story of Mixtli is the story of the Aztecs themselves—a compelling, epic tale of heroic dignity and a colossal civilization’s rise and fall.

Read it.
AZTEC is the first of six books in the AZTEC historical novel series. This is the foundational first of the series that tells the story of the Aztec before, during and the shortly their after the beginning of the Spanish conquistitor corruption of the indiginous peoples of Mexico. This book brings into mind the horrific destruction of cultural annihilation of the Aztec peoples which highlights religious fervor for all the wrong reasons. Simply stated, this is how religions had and still today can foster a way that attirbutes a just cause for the extinction of cultures. A top read for those interested in top rate fiction based on histrical fact.
I read this book many, many years ago. The detail of the Aztec civilization and the way of life during that time is what remains with me. The story line, not really, but does that really matter?
I know this is a novel, but I learned so much about what could have been the history of the Aztec civilizations and the lack of perspective or narrow lens each of us often uses without even recognizing it.
Historically accurate, really good.
This was the first Gary Jennings book I ever read and it got me hooked. His knowledge of the Aztec culture is amazing. This book, like all Jennings’ tomes, is filled with adventure, intriguing characters, and great historical content. It, like Jenning’s other novels, is very long, but never is there a dull moment. Upon reaching the end, I wished there was even more. My appetite whetted by Aztec, I went on to read many more of Jennings’ fantastic stories.
One caveat: Aztec (and all of Jennings’ books that I’ve read) have a fair amount of explicit sex scenes and violence which often includes torture. It may be too much for some readers.
Although it has been many years since I read this book, I would easily put it on my “best books I’ve ever read” list. The characters, whose lives are turned upside down by the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors, are unforgettable. Highly recommended for anyone who loves historical fiction.
Great epic historical fiction! Loved it!
Absolutly unforgettable ! I read this book many years ago, maybe 40 or so. I am able to remember it as if it was read only last month. I have recommended it to many friends and acquaintances. One thing though, it is NOT a book for the squeamish.
You feel you were there, not just reading it!
One disturbing entry after the other, which didn’t help tell a story, seems more like shock factor that I soon got numb to.
Compelling.
I have read this book 4 times. I loved it. You feel like you are there. There are also several sequels.
Boring, the story should be great but presenting it as a book for a class in school didn’t work. Couldn’t finish it.
An amazing story. I have read this book a number of times and never get tired of it. (will probably read it again in a couple of years.)
It gives another twist to the story of the Aztec Indians and their civilization, as well as the Mayans and how the Spanish played a large part in the destruction of their entire culture(s).
Once you pick it up, I guarantee that you will find yourself up late at night trying to read as much of the story at you can…….it is that hard to put down.
Enjoy!
Just couldn’t get into it. I tried.
It is a good telling of the Aztec culture. I found it facinatimg
Amazing novel. Great amount of details about Aztec Empire before the Spanish Conquest. May not be 100% accurate but it allowed the reader to feel apart of a lost world.
My most favorite book. I have read Aztec four times and am enthralled each time. Well researched. A fantastic read.
I list this book in my very, very top 10 list. II don’t know how to add other words/adjectives above but I would include:
Gory, human sacrifices, authentic. fascinating, a lot of loooooong words that are impossible to say in English so you just have to make-up your own pronunciation for them.
Just so you know a few of other books I would add to my top 10 —
The Poison wood bible Barabra Kingsolver
A Fine Balance Mistry
The Alienist Calab Carr
??? And the secret Fan Lisa See
Just a few.
