The Aztec Alphas by author F.R.D’Angelo is a complicated read. This book starts off The Prophecy series. I loved the artwork in this book so pretty.
Now the rest of the book however, I am not sure I completely understood this story. It starts off by hearing about the legend of the Aztec wolves and how they are going to come back. Then we jump ahead 28 years to where the story starts now.
We have Azkin who has lost his parents. He has also lost his way too. He has not turned into his wolf for a long time now, he cannot seem to find his center. His best friend and who he discovers he loves has been avoiding him.
Then the prophecy starts…. And the entire world changes for Azkin.
There is action, the supernatural, shifters, and lots of love all tied together in this story. There is a happy for now ending. And it does turn out that Zain loves Azkin but is it enough to help him get through what is to come and save all of them?
There is a ton of information in this book. I think that was my problem with this story. I felt overwhelmed and lost. However, I shall see how the next book is. Sometimes first books suffer from this problem and the second book irons it all out. I am looking forward to the next part of this series and more clarification on this story.
After loosing my parents to an accident life has become so very difficult, I am so very lost and lonley now. I decide to spend sometime at the farm and while out in the fields I finially lose it as my grief overwhelms me and the Prophacy that was foretold was coming true. My parents are back from the dead, we will form a new pack and I will become the Aztec Alpha but only if things go the way they are fortold.
A unique world with common issues, this series has the potential to be a good blend between the two. It’s not assured from the first story that the path is solid there, but it’s got a few positives going for it that show the makings of something interesting.
The writing style is just not for me. It was so hard to sink into the story because I constantly felt like the author was just trying too hard to make the language seem as mysterious, other worldly, and poetic as possible. And then with the sudden usage of the F bomb I was shocked out of whatever groove I was kind of finding myself in. I’m not against profanity, not at all, but the way it was used in its inception just doesn’t fit. It very quickly becomes apparent that they’re pretty modern in their dirty talk when things get hot between the men, so it’s not like they don’t use those words, it’s just the mix of esoteric and profane that doesn’t work. And the CONSTANT shifting of perspective between not just the main characters but pretty much every single side character too was beyond frustrating. I kept getting lost and I’m not really one to be easily confused.
As for the characters themselves, there’s a disconnect for me. I kinda like them but I’m not captivated. Azkin has great moments, but he is so reactionary that I just can’t seem to get a handle on what kind of person he really is. There are a ton of sides to him, facets that make him uniquely perfect for his role in the story, but they don’t all flow together well enough to make each part seem like it’s part of a whole. Similarly with Zain, we get a lot of intimations of secrets, past damage, and motivations prefaced by “We need to talk” and then almost nothing gets really explained. We get his explanations in pieces that don’t exactly fit with where they’re placed in the story.
I think the story suffers from trying too hard and a lack of flow. Despite that, the story finds itself by the end and though it took me days to read the book instead of hours for its length, I’m actually looking forward to getting into the second book. With an info dump of epic proportions for so many of the side characters I found myself drawn to many of them once I saw their interactions with the Aztec Alphas. Before that I just wanted to skip over pages and pages of introductions…I didn’t and am glad for it, but it was certainly an endeavor to read to the end of the book. In order to make those characters all make sense and give them a sense of place in the world that’s created we get quite a few side stories with relationships, mates, experiences, and interactions that don’t necessarily add depth to the overall story, but it does give a broader sense of who fits where and tells us the Aztecs have a whole lot of ridiculous that we’ll be experiencing and learning about as the series progresses.
This is a whole new level of a shifter story! Wow! I was blown away and can’t wait for the next book. Az and Zain are embarking on a hard yet beautiful journey together. You will not be disappointed
