It’s Scotland and the Ballantine Circus, led by ringmaster William Ballantine, is set to entertain in the village of Aberdale. Performers are traversing the area announcing their arrival and enticing villagers to attend. Beatrice Turner has been a member of the circus for fifteen years; she’d been orphaned at six years old and reduced to living on the streets as a beggar, until William took pity on her when he caught her stealing his food hiring her on the spot. As she left with the circus, she would be destined to return to the area. Beyond the village walls she stops at a clearing where she meets Jeames Abernathy. They both exchange quips and glances, and the strength of their connection is obvious, but he is the heir to the MacKenzie lairdship and betrothed to one of his status and she is most unsuitable as a traveling equestrienne. Oh, the attractions of opposites!
I have recently converted to being a fan of historical romance novels whether Highland heroes or Regency gentlemen, I enjoy being transported to another time, another place with colorful characters, romantic entanglements, and a glorious ending sometimes invoking a tear of joy. Maddie MacKenna has it all along with descriptive language to bring to life the sights and sounds of an age centuries ago, dialogue to illustrate the emotions and personalities, and insights inner dialogue shares with each character’s first person perspective. It’s not deeply complex, but the lovers do have obstacles to overcome, secrets to reveal, and destiny to challenge. “Aye,” even the Scottish brogue is realistically presented…a Brogue glossary is included! Entertaining!
