The star of truTV’s hit show Impractical Jokers—alongside veteran sci-fi and horror writer Darren Wearmouth—delivers a chilling and wickedly fun supernatural novel in the vein of The Strain, in which a beautiful new subway line in New York City unearths an ancient dark horror that threatens the city’s utter destruction and the balance of civilization itself.
After years of waiting, New York’s newest subway line is finally ready, an express train that connects the city with the burgeoning communities across the Hudson River. The shining jewel of this state-of-the-art line is a breathtaking visitors’ pavilion beneath the river. Major dignitaries, including New York City’s Mayor and the President of the United States, are in attendance for the inaugural run, as the first train slowly pulls in.
Under the station’s bright ceiling lights, the shiny silver cars gleam. But as the train comes closer into view, a far different scene becomes visible.
All the train’s cars are empty.
All the cars’ interiors are drenched in blood.
As chaos descends, all those in the pavilion scramble to get out. But the horror is only beginning. High levels of deadly methane fill the tunnels. The structure begins to flood. For those who don’t drown, choke or spark an explosion, another terrifying danger awaits—the thing that killed all those people on the train. It’s out there…and it’s coming.
There’s something living beneath New York City, and it’s not happy we’ve woken it up.

AWAKENED is a good old-fashioned monster story with devious new twists. Creepy and disturbing in all the right ways!
WOW!!! What an absolutely, fantastic, scary story!!! I was lost in this book immediately, knew before I finished the first chapter that I would be buying the second book, following the work of James S. Murry, Darren Wearmouth. I highly recommend anyone who likes this genre to buy Awakened as fast as they can and be prepared to start it, read it right through to the end!! Awesome story, awesome writing!!
Never read this author before. Will now.
This book starts off by jumping the gun and draws the reader in like a tornado vacuum cleaner. Then it is too late to escape. Just HAVE to finish it….
Wow!! One of the scariest books that I have read!
Oh my goodness what a great book! Right from the beginning I was like “oh s#*t!” Very discriptive, you can imagine every single thing happening. I definitely cannot wait until book 2 comes out next summer and book 3 summer 2020! James Murray has been working on this book for 10+ years and he did a fantastic job for his first book!
Pretty surprised to find out this was written by one of the Actors of the show Impractical Jokers. I went into it assuming that it would be a bit comical, but instead I ended up with a really good Horror/Sci-fi Novel. Looking forward to the Sequel/Trilogy and also to a new book released by the same duo, “ Don’t Move “
Definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys the Genre.
Very well written and original consept.
I am a horror aficionado and don’t scare easily. I was deliciously frightened reading this book. The first night I had to force myself to stop reading and move onto another gentler genre before I could go to sleep. The second night night I vowed to stop reading and go to bed early because I had a meeting at work the next day. Did I stop? No, I plowed right through, all scared and hyped up. AWAKENED is action-packed and entertaining. All the conflicts and twists had me turning page after page after page. This novel kept me awake, heart pumping, startled by every noise in the house. It was so much fun. Can’t wait to read more by these guys.
Took me a 2nd try because I couldnt get into the book at first but I am glad I gave it a 2nd try. The book is great. Exciting and suspenseful. Great characters that you root for along the way.
The book had good characters and a great idea. There are times when it drags a bit, but then it gets going again and you cannot read fast enough.
The conspiracy theory junkie’s dream. Deliciously graphic and superfluously gory. Devoured it in a day.
Monsters, traitors, & surprises galore. A real page turner.
Page Turner. Would make a good movie
This is a sci-fi action packed book that reminds me of the predator or alien movies. You also have political intrigue, money, and power.
The first section moves quite fast and sets you up for more to follow. It sets the mood of trepidation and fear.
You have the Mayor of New York, the President and all the bigwigs attending the opening ceremony for a new subway system. The tunnels will connect major areas on the east coast for speed and convenience…does anyone else ever wonder how deep can we dig before affecting our environment?
When part of a train disappears loaded with
peopleand reappears broken, bloody and no people…..panic.
The Mayor’s wife was on that train. The President backs away as if he is not part if this “problem” and his secret service agents attack the crowd of bewildered attendees. This is where the plot becomes a bit crowded with the different agendas of each group. The secret service put President Reynolds into a safe area and leave everyone to fend for themselves against terrorists. Because what else could it be?
The Mayor, his head of staff, Dan North, and others are left to help the cops deal with the injured and scared. In the building with Reynolds are his agents and the team running the subway system. Munoz and his team try and work with the President’s people but are horrified as methane gas fills the tunnels and they aren’t allowed to rescue the people outside the locked doors.
Cafferty as the mayor, and others try and figure out how to save everyone along with a French photographer that seens to know more than he should. Meanwhile a team of elite walk into the tunnel to look for the missing passengers including Sarah. She reminds me of the S. Weaver character in Aliens ,a hero, stubborn, and afraid of very little…till now.
There is political intrigue, power moves and enough secrets to make you continue reading and wondering…terrorists or monsters?
Good plot, solid characters, and enough action to make you feel you ran right behind Cafferty as he looks for his wife and the rest of the missing people from the train.
If you love science fiction, action, adventure, and intrigue, then you’ll love this book. I gave it 4 stars as sci-fi is not my favorite ..yet I enjoyed it. Protect your back, read this with a good light, a blanket and expect to be up late.
A fun start to what seems to be a conspiracy series. A little horror, a little mystery, a little heartbreak, and a little action. I liked it!
Must read.
What a load of crap. I can’t believe I read the whole thing – waiting for it to get better but you can’t dress up crap & call it gourmet food.
I didn’t like this one. It was slow moving and I couldn’t get into it. I stopped reading about a quarter of the way through. I think it might make an okay movie, but not a good book.
