AN AMAZON MYSTERY BEST SELLER★★★★★ “A rousing crime novel.” – Amazon Top Reviewer Mack August, frustrated Los Angeles police detective, moves to a smaller city in Virginia to start over. Rather than join the force, he opens his own P.I. shop and hires out to local attorneys–until Sheriff Stackhouse comes calling, a stunner in designer khakis. Trouble has arrived, she explains, in the form of a … the form of a gang general from the West Coast. He’s galvanizing the drug trade using vicious strong-arm tactics, and the police can’t identify him.
The Sheriff begs Mackenzie to take a temporary assignment teaching at an inner city school, to infiltrate the general’s operative ranks inside, identify the crime boss, and bring him down. It’s an impossible task; he’d be a bull in a china shop. He could lose his license and people might get hurt. But if anyone can pull it off…
It’s the next great private detective, Mackenzie August.

If you liked the Spenser for Hire series, you will like Detective August. He’s updated, meaner or maybe nicer, hard to tell. But you should definitely give this series a try.
I love this author. Intriguing characters and unusual story lines make this book hard to put down. I have to schedule weekend only time for his books. Otherwise I am up all night. Just finished all the books I could find and csnt wait for the next one.
I found myself sucked into this book immediately. I finished this in a day because I couldn’t put it down.
Awesome plot and even better character development! One of my favorite authors. Just wonderful!!
Liked the characters for the most part – the female leads physical qualities a bit to perfect, may induce nausea in some. She embodies the term “hot mess.” The story kept me reading past bedtime.
It grabbed me from the beginning.
Good start to a good series.
Liked the book. Looking forward to more by this author.
I loved Mackenzie August from the moment he corrected Sergeant Sanders’s grammar. Not your average gumshoe, August presents a confident, self-righteous persona, but occasionally his human side appears. He is someone with whom we can look up to one moment, and identify with the next. The mystery keeps the reader turning the pages, but the character is witty and enjoyable. I laughed out loud a couple of times.
all i remember is that i wanted more, but i have toio many to read before i start buying books
Interesting characters and story. A good first novel to build characters forfuture stories.
Great character!
A great read! I thoroughly enjoyed the entire series
If you like the sarcasm of Jack Reacher or Kinsey Millhone, this is the book for you. I read it so fast, that it left me thirsting for more!
I could hardly put this book down. Adding Mr. Lee to my book of best loved authors!
Great characters
Excellent complex characters and plot, ending with an intriguing moral dilemma.
A great read, not just a mystery novel but extremely funny with witty lines on almost every page. A heartfelt recommendation from me.
