AN AMAZON MYSTERY BEST SELLER★★★★★ “A rousing crime novel.” – Amazon Top Reviewer Mack August, frustrated Los Angeles police detective, moves to a smaller city in Virginia to start over. Rather than join the force, he opens his own P.I. shop and hires out to local attorneys–until Sheriff Stackhouse comes calling, a stunner in designer khakis. Trouble has arrived, she explains, in the form of a … the form of a gang general from the West Coast. He’s galvanizing the drug trade using vicious strong-arm tactics, and the police can’t identify him.
The Sheriff begs Mackenzie to take a temporary assignment teaching at an inner city school, to infiltrate the general’s operative ranks inside, identify the crime boss, and bring him down. It’s an impossible task; he’d be a bull in a china shop. He could lose his license and people might get hurt. But if anyone can pull it off…
It’s the next great private detective, Mackenzie August.

Absolutely love Mack August, Alan Lees’s PI in his books. Witty, funny, masculine. I look forward to more from this author. Five stars. Keep em coming!
This was a fun read. The characters were interesting and the plot intriguing. I will read more in this series.
It was a great surprise to find this light hearted comedy.
I like the story! I’ve not read Alan Lee before and am so glad I was introduced to him by way of his character, Mackenzie August. This character is awesome! His storyline is as well! Intriguing with great supporting characters! I can’t wait to read more!
The plot of the book was unrealistic. A city with a drug problem does not hire a private investigator unless the DEA doesn’t work Virginia. In spite of that, I did enjoy the cast of characters and the protagonist’s many attempts at humor, although I thought it overplayed. He corrects it in the next novel. He has some good lines but tries too hard and often. There was also a major fallacy to how an experienced ex-homicide detective frrom LA would behave. If I could have given it 3.5 stars I would have.
Another fast paced, well written good read from M. Lee. Read books out of order so this one explained many things that have been touched upon in other books. And, as I have come to expect from M. Lee’s books, a touch of humor.
Mac’s sarcasm wears sometimes, but otherwise a good read.
I loved this book! The main character, Mackenzie August, is a PI who is smart and hilariously witty which catches a lot of folks off guard. I immediately got the next book after reading the first one and then read the second one in one day. Then I got the next one. I’m definitely going to get all of them.
Liked the witty main character.
Couldn’t put this book down. After a 12 hr work day, it was great to relax and read this book. A definite page turner.
Some of the books I get on Bookbub can be really terrible and then you discover some gems like this one. An author to get to know better!
Great book…held my interest all night!!!
Loved this book. Characters highly developed. Very funny. Can’t wait to read the next one.
An inspirational storyline showing the other side of the social coin with a humble but thoughtful and positive attitude.
August Origins (Mackenzie August #1) by Alan Lee is a thoroughly enjoyable detective novel. Full of action, sarcasm, and laugh out loud humor this book is a winner. Multifaceted characters enrich an entertaining story and set the stage for additional books in the series.

AUGUST ORIGINS introduces Mack August, former police detective, former English teacher, now a Private Investigator.
Sheriff Stackhouse begs Mack to help her out. The drug trade in their area has been taken over by a gang leader, known as the General, and young girls have been targeted… then killed as a rite of passage.
She wants him to go undercover at the local high school in order to infiltrate the general’s operative ranks inside, identify the crime boss, and bring him down.
There’s plenty of action with enough ‘toughs’ to keep you riveted to the pages. Watch out for the explosive, unexpected conslusion. This is just the first of a series and I, for one, will be adding the others to my towering TBB pile.
Mack August is a unique character. He has a smart-aleck answer for just about everything. He’s funny and sometimes irrelevant, sometimes rude, sometimes just to make a point. He lives with his father, Timothy August (as he always calls him) and his 2-year-old son. He’s trying hard to be the kind of man, the kind of son, the kind of father, that he wants to be.
Mack is also tough as nails, practices Mixed Martial Arts and has no fear that he doesn’t joke about. He also has a best friend, Manny, a member of law enforcement, who shows up to stay with them awhile. He bunks on Mack’s floor with a gun drawn .. but he’s sweet as candy when it comes to Mack’s son.
This is well written with skillfully drawn characters. Mack’s sense of humor may not be for everyone, but I enjoyed the heck out of it. There’s a bit of budding romance, but Mack isn’t sure he wants involved with a woman who is a practicing lawyer and a bartender.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING!
You want to get to the conclusion.
loved it…. great job!
