Haunted by the horrors of war, ex-cavalry officer Matthew Hanger leads a band of mercenaries known as Hanger’s Horsemen who have become legends in 1890s Texas. They defend the innocent and obtain justice for the oppressed. But when a rustler’s bullet leaves one of them at death’s door, they’re the ones in need of saving.
Dr. Josephine Burkett is used to men taking one look at her skirts and … skirts and discounting her medical skills. What she’s not used to is having a man change his mind in a heartbeat and offer to assist her in surgery. Matthew Hanger’s dedication to his friend during recovery earns Josephine’s respect, and when she hears of her brother’s abduction, he becomes her only hope for rescue.
Matt has stared down ruthless outlaws, betrayal, and injury, but when a bossy lady doctor crawls under his skin, his heart is tempted to surrender. And when she is caught in the crossfire, he may have to sacrifice everything–even his team–to save her.

Karen has done it again. She has crafted a novel that had me caring so deeply about the characters I had to put the book down when the danger ratcheted to high levels. I’m so glad I quickly came back to it because the combination of Matthew Hanger and Dr. Jo Burnett was perfect. Two lead characters who care and live deeply, both strong on their own, but learning to give control to the only One who can realluy save the day. Add a great cast of supporting characters, a little brother I did not like at the beginnig but who showed signs of coming around, and a story with tighting tension, and I’m a goner. This book is a perfect example of why her books jump to the top of my to be read pile immediately.
I LOVE this new series already! Karen Witemeyer is one of my favorite authors, and I think this might be my all-time favorite book from her. I love a strong hero, and Matthew Hangar fits the bill perfectly! The romance between him and Josephine is just right, and the story itself has a great mix of action and adventure. I highly recommend!
At Love’s Command by Karen Witemeyer is one awesome story! I loved every minute, and I’m sad my time with these characters is over … for now. The plot is highly engaging; the pages flew by! The action is pretty intense; there are a couple scenes I was on the literal edge of my seat. The characters are SUPERB. The bad guys are crusty and dirty and evil. You root for them to lose the whole time! The good guys are fantastically endearing and relatable. Josie is a spitfire heroine. She is sassy, smart, and bossy. She is also exceptionally capable and brave. I found her to be the perfect match for Matthew Hanger. And, let’s talk about Matthew Hanger for just a second. How would I describe him? How about the coolest Western hero ever!!! He’s smart, strong, and very, very capable. He has a heart as big as Texas. He’s broody, but not negative. He carries the world upon his shoulders, but he’s the first to run into a burning building to save someone’s life. He’s downright sexy, yet he doesn’t know it. Most importantly, he’s just SO cool. Like James Bond cool. And, if this isn’t enough to make it a must-read novel, Witemeyer weaves beautiful and timely messages throughout her narrative. All of this coalesces into one spectacular read that I HIGHLY recommend.
Josie is a get-things-done kind of woman. She is highly intelligent, exceptionally capable, and not afraid to get in the middle of a fray if it means helping someone she loves. When she sees someone hurt, even the “bad” guys, her medical instincts kick into high gear and she cannot physically help herself — she has to fix whatever is broken. One can get caught up by such abilities and fall into the trap of feeling like she is in control. In a moment of great frustration, Josie thinks to herself that “[she hates] being outside the realm of control.” Oh my, do I completely understand this sentiment. I am a massive control freak and my OCD can skew off the charts. When life gets crazy I do my utmost to control everything. I mistakenly believe that if I can control my surroundings then the crazy I’m going through won’t drown me, and I will ultimately be able to create the outcome I want. Yes, this is foolish. The only thing I can control is how I behave in those crazy moments and if I go to God or not. But my instinct is like Josie’s — I want to fix everything. However, like Josie, I have learned the truth — I control very little and I can’t fix everything. I cannot always shield my loved ones from pain, suffering, or tragedy no matter how much I try. Only God can control everything. As Josie comes to understand in this story, I, too, understand that I have to trust that God works EVERYTHING for the good of those who love Him, and sometimes that means doing nothing myself and getting out of God’s way so He can work! Not an easy lesson to learn, but one that is of the utmost importance.
At Love’s Command is a one-of-a-kind read. Yes, many have written Westerns, and many have written very good Westerns, but there is something different about this book. Witemeyer has written a home run! If you are a fan of Westerns then At Love’s Command is a novel you do not want to miss. This is a story that will stick with the reader long after the final pages have been read.
I received a copy of this novel in eBook form from Bethany House Publishers via NetGalley in order to review. I also received a paperback copy of this novel from Bethany House Publishers as well. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I think this is the best and most “mature” story Witemeyer has written. The depth of her characters was, in my humble opinion, complex and engaging. You see and feel their story, you don’t just read it. Yes, the ending is predictable but it wouldn’t be a romance if it wasn’t. An enjoyable, inspirational read that is well worth your time. Witemeyer never disappoints.
At Love’s Command, the first book in the author’s newest series, Hanger’s Horseman, did not disappoint this avid Witemeyer fan. The witty banter Witemeyer readers have come to expect is laced throughout the book. Unlike the author’s previous stories that I can recall, there is more adventure and danger woven into the plot, especially in the opening scenes. The Prologue finds our hero caught up in the massacre at Wounded Knee. An event that not only haunts Matt and the other horsemen but also changes their lives. Torn apart by grief, angst, and disgust for their participation in what they believed would be weapons confiscation only, the Horsemen dedicate the rest of their lives to righting wrongs and fighting against injustice wherever they can. However, Matt and the others learn that only Christ’s sacrifice on the cross can atone for their sins.
The romance between Jo and Matt is tender and sweet and I love Jo’s spunk as she takes on the role of doctor at a time when that was uncommon for a woman. And before I forget let me say something about Matt — whew, ladies have the fan ready, because he is a totally swoon-worthy hero. I think fans of the Archer Brothers series will gravitate to Hanger’s Horseman. At Love’s Command commanded my attention from beginning to end.

A Godly Hero and a Lady Doctor. Could this be a match made in Heaven? But these two meet in Purgatory, Texas!
Matthew Hanger and his three comrades have retired from the cavalry and become united in a cause for justice. After Mark Wallace is injured, they turn to Josephine Burkett to do the doctoring. Dr. Jo has made her mark in the medical world and expects that her matrimonial prospects are dim. Until she meets Matt Hanger. Quote: He made a glorious picture. Tall in the saddle. Valiant. Unafraid of dangers that lurked ahead. A hero on a noble quest.
I loved the premise that Matt, Jonah, Mark and Luke were ex-military and used their experience to right wrongs. Luke is nicknamed Preach and has a Scripture for everything, especially before the Horsemen set out to roust outlaws. They seek God’s direction in everything and learn how to submit to Him. They have faith and integrity.
The banter between Matt and Jo with her: “highfalutin, ten dollar words” showed their personalities. Dr. Jo might be educated but she can understand people and is loyal to family.
Another winner for Karen Witemeyer with more to come from the other Horsemen.

At Love’s Command, by Karen Witemeyer, is a treasure of words wrapped in stunning story and sealed with hope and meaning. With fascinating characters and a captivating plot, this novel is thoroughly engaging and beautifully written. Elements of history, suspense, and romance come together seamlessly to create a story that entertains and inspires.
With a writing talent that seems effortless, Ms. Witemeyer has once again crafted a story that is utterly memorable and enjoyable. The characters in this novel are complex, compassionate, determined, and loyal. As they pursue redemption and purpose, they make room in their hearts for forgiveness, faith, and unexpected blessings. In their vulnerability, they are relatable, and they enrich this novel with their wit and authenticity. Furthermore, Ms. Witemeyer places these characters in situations that challenge them physically, emotionally, and spiritually, while still leaving room for God’s merciful provision and grace. So as the plot unfolds, there are plenty of surprises and unexpected moments that are truly thrilling and delightfully endearing.
From the first page to the last, At Love’s Command, is a compelling adventure full of faith and heart. Its riveting story is certainly worthy of praise and attention. It is a remarkable start to an exciting new series, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

This is a great start to a new series! I really enjoyed this book! I read most of it in one sitting. I really liked Matthew and his Horsemen. I also really liked Josephine’s spunky character. I can’t wait to see what the next book holds!

I love, love, love Karen Witemeyer’s books and At Love’s Command does not disappoint. This first installment to her Hanger’s Horsemen may be up to the top of my favorite I have read by her. Matthew and Josephine were so entertaining together. I had myself giggling reading some of their scenes. I enjoyed getting to know them and spending a few quick hours with them.
I am giving At Love’s Command a very well deserved five plus stars. I can not wait to continue the Hanger’s Horsemen. I highly recommend this one for who enjoy fun and inspirational historical romance.
I received this book by the publisher, but was not required to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
4.5stars
“The Doc’s one of us now, Cap. The moment you staked your claim, she became family.”
Dr. Josephine Burkett’s life changed dramatically the moment that Matthew Hanger deposited one of his men onto her treament table with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. Treating one of the famed “Hanger’s Horsemen” had not been on her agenda, and sparring with their larger then life captain had never made her list of life goals, but Jo was pleasantly surprised at how much she was actually enjoying it. Once she manged to burrow under Matt’s gruff exterior, there was a wounded hero just waiting to be recognized . . . . and possibly even loved. . . . . but that was just the beginning of the story.
What magnificent characters with rich, deep inspiration, beginning with Preach’s Scripture quoting; as essential to the story as his character. And there’s Jonah, with his eagle eyes and practical application of strategy. The youngster Mark; with those winsome smiles and his charming disposition; he smoothed out so many rough edges, not to mention demonstrating his stalwart bravery under pain and pressure. Last but certainly not least, the warrior leader, with his sharp battle skills and intuition, but possessing a heart that loved fiercely, and passionately, and possibly . . . had room to love a lady doc, who couldn’t help but spout off a dictionary full of words that most people wouldn’t begin to understand. But he didn’t have to, he understood her heart.
This is going to be a great series! It already is.
I absolutely love this series by Karen Witemeyer. Filled with romance, action, strong and wonderful characters, deeply moving situations, wit, and inspirational thoughts. I highly recommend this series.
Search and rescue – Western style!
The Hanger’s Horsemen series started out with a bang! The four equestrians are a band of ex-cavalry soldiers for hire to right wrongs. These honorable men have a secret, though. They have determined to use their guns but not to kill – whenever possible.
When one of the four is severely injured, Matt is directed to Dr. Joe’s office in Purgatory, the nearby town. To his surprise, Dr. Joe is really Dr. Josephine! To his credit, once he recovered from his initial shock, he treated her with respect for her knowledge and allowed her to do what she had to in order to save Mark’s life.
Jo, or Josie, as Matt came to call her, was at lot of fun! She used her ten-dollar-words as a weapon against ignorant men who couldn’t or wouldn’t accept her as a qualified doctor because she was a woman. She had plenty of spunk and was fiercely loyal.
A man of faith, Matt relied on God even when he couldn’t see how things would turn out. Which is, of course, the real sign of faith. He started his days and his missions having Preach share quotes from the repository of scripture he stored in his heart. (You’re gonna love Luke!) Matt was strong and determined – a man’s man – and yet was gentle and humble enough to serve his men and be willing to keep vigil over a wounded soldier to see that he recovered.
I loved the verbal sparring between Matt and Josie. And the dramatic way God answered the prayer of the horsemen when they were in need – and how in meeting their need, He also met the need of their rescuer.
The theme of At Love’s Command is surrendering to God. Matt had to surrender all his military skills and knowledge and trust God when all else was stripped away. I appreciated the beautiful ways the characters learned these lessons and how when they fully trusted God, He worked on their behalf in surprising ways.
Full of action and surprises, this story was such a pleasure to read. Karen Witemeyer created a great balance between realistic gunfights full of suspense and light-hearted banter. There is a little blood but not too much. The suspense is not overwhelming.
I’m really excited about this new series! Matt and his men are so … admirable! I can’t wait to learn what happens to Preach, Mark and Jonah, too!

What a wonderful new book from Karen Witemeyer! The story starts with quite the action scene and the action and drama continue right through to the end. The characters grew on me and earned a place in my heart.
Josephine Burkett has a heart for helping others and hands that were meant for healing. At a time in our history when women were not looked favorably on if they wanted to be a doctor. She proves to not only the town, but also anyone she comes in contact with that she is the very best doctor they could ever hope to meet. Her tenacity might just lead her into trouble.
Matthew Hanger and his comrades seek to help those in trouble, but when trouble comes knocking on their door and turns their plans and lives sideways, will they come out the other side the same?
If you enjoy romantic western Christian Fiction, then you won’t want to miss this exciting, and heartwarming story. I for one am eager to read more stories about Hanger’s Horsemen!

What a fabulous story! I love Karen Witemeyer’s books and At Love’s Command is one of my favorites of hers! I loved everything about this book! Matt and Jo were such fun main characters (Jo might be my favorite Witemeyer heroine!) and I absolutely adored every minute of their story! I loved all eight members of Hanger’s Horsemen (yes, I’m counting the horses too!) they sort of made me think a little bit of a historical version of the A-Team, I love that show so it was super fun to read a book with a similar premise, though the two stories are very different! I cannot wait for Mark, Jonah, and Luke’s stories! Karen Witemeyer hit a home run with At Love’s Command, I absolutely adored it and most highly recommend it!
I received an ebook copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley. My review was not influenced in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.
Listening to a Karen Witemeyer book is as much a delight as reading one. At Love’s command was such a fun story. Loved the conflict the characters faced and the characters themselves. A perfect blend that kept me listening.
As ever with Karen Witemeyer’s books, my attention was grabbed right away. Matthew Hanger is a compelling hero with an interesting and complicated backstory. He’s definitely swoon worthy in his pursuit of what’s right, no matter the cost to his safety.
Dr Josephine Burkett is highly educated, compassionate and equally brave. When their paths cross, the sparks fly and trouble just keeps coming. If you’d like to escape to another time and place, and stay somewhere good is championed and wins, if you’d enjoy a charming romance and colorful secondary characters, if you’d like to be encouraged and entertained, then I certainly recommend At Love’s Command.
At Love’s Command was fantastic and my new favourite Karen Witemeyer book! This is the first book Karen Witemeyer has written where the storyline is focused on the male lead rather than the female, hence the beautiful man on the cover! It’s such a refreshing change after reading so many female focused books. Obviously, Josephine is still a big part of the story too but it was just so nice to hear more from Matthew’s side. The topic of guns, war and violence, whether for good or bad, is a fine balance to write about but Karen Witemeyer executed it beautifully. I loved Matthew’s character sooooo much! Gruff, strong, protective men are my favourite ones to read about so I really enjoyed reading about Matthew. I really admired Josephine too (and I loved her name!). I liked how even though she was strong and worked in a at-the-time male profession that it didn’t make her any less feminine. Insta romances aren’t always my favourite but this one is written in such a way that it didn’t feel like a quick romance even though technically it was.
This book was absolutely lovely. Karen does quiet, brooding, rough around the edges cowboy like no other. Matthew was a hero I liked from beginning to end and I really loved all 4 of the Hangarmen. And then there was Josephine. What a woman! I thought the way she balanced her career with a budding desire for family was realistic and not one sided. Often times I feel that women with careers in historical fiction almost scream from the mountains that they value their career and don’t need society’s expectations. But Josephine was open to whatever the Lord wanted for her. I can’t wait to read the next in the series because I have to know what happens with some of the other Hangarmen!
Karen Witemeyer is one of my favorite authors, so when I picked up At Love’s Command, I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed.
Though the novel is a historical romance and centers around the relationship of Josephine Burkett and Matthew Hanger, I found the comradery between the four calvery horsemen more enjoyable. The banter between the men added an element of humor to the story. Josephine Burkett, a strong, stubborn doctor, adds a feminine touch to the rugged men.
I look forward to the second book in the Hanger’s Horsemen series.
By the time I was 25% in, I couldn’t put it down!! What I thought was going to be the climax was only about halfway through and led to several more escalating tensions – all seeming very realistic. It wasn’t just drama for the sake of drama. It really felt believable.
Even the quick romance between two very strong personalities – it shouldn’t have been believable on paper. But it felt realistic, too. I loved how their vocations seemed diametrically opposed, a real barrier to a relationship.
I loved all the dimensions of every secondary character, except for the villain. I don’t think there was a redeeming quality for him. I even loved the horses!
And of course, Mrs. Witemeyer’s signature humor was woven throughout – I adore it!!
And I love how again she brought in the faith element. Trust in God was a major theme, which is so relatable.
The only thing I didn’t like was the prologue being so violent. Was it really necessary for us to be there to get a sense of who he was? I think we could have just gotten his response to a few of his memories to see how the violence shaped him.
Other than that, it was amazing!! I cried through the last three chapters. I will definitely be re-reading this one, and I can’t wait to start the next in the series!
Favorite quotes:
“She stole a peek at the stiff fellow who had yet to reanimate after suffering rapid-onset paralysis. A condition commonly brought on by the pronouncement of her medical expertise. Josephine shook her head. The poor male brain. So susceptible to gender-oriented shock.” (p. 30)
“In the meantime, Dr. Jo’s infirmary was going to double as an armory. A grin quirked Matt’s mouth She was gonna love that.” (p. 47)
“Thankfully, the light of day brought a return of her scientific mind-set [sic] and banished imaginative tendencies to the mental closet where she locked away any thoughts that threatened to distract her from her calling. She was a doctor, not a debutante.” – I hope this was a very subtle allusion to Star Trek’s bit by Dr. McCoy. 😀 (p. 70)
“Perhaps he fought now to protect the weak and preserve justice, but the fact as, he still chose a path of violence, not one of peace. The very opposite of the oath she’d taken to first do no harm.” (p. 94)
“’Godspeed.’ Yes, Lord, Josephine prayed as she hurried back to the livery. I’m going to need all the speed you can give me.” – I’m so happy to see this Old West word used in the way it was originally meant. (p. 103)
“Stubborn woman, insisting on believing the best of him when she didn’t know the worst. Time to bring out the big guns.” (p. 137)
“Craving knowledge might be her greatest strength as a doctor, but it was her greatest weakness when it came to matters of faith. Faith in people and faith in God.” (p. 146)
“He couldn’t fight what was out of reach. Couldn’t control what was out of his hands. So he’d focus on what he could control: his mind.” (p. 224)
“For a soldier trained against surrender, he sure was doing it a lot today. Forfeiting control to an almighty God should be easier than giving in to a gang of outlaws, yet he still struggled.” (p. 261)
