“Find someone who loves you enough to forgive you for all of your mistakes.” Debasish Mridha
I have read all the books in the Willow Hall series. Unfortunately, I should have read the novelette ‘Better Than She Deserved’ last. Book 4 actually answered so many of the questions I had when I read the novelette about Caroline. The events in book 4 is what sent Caroline to her friend’s house party looking for a husband. Everything that happened to her in that story was set in motion by the events in this book.
So, what did she do that was so bad? Well, let’s just say she was creative and started a gossip avalanche that nearly wrecked her life as well as tainted the reputations of her brother Charles, Mr. Darcy, Miss Bennet, Miss Elizabeth, and Miss Lydia Bennet. Yeah, when our dear Caro gets on a roll, she is near unstoppable.
Wickham was given his share in the debacle and he paid dearly for it. We don’t know his final outcome until the epilogue. He fills Mr. Collins’ head with gossip regarding his cousins, who then sets off Lady Catherine, who then crashed the third and final reading of the banns for Darcy and Elizabeth. That went over well and squarely placed Lord Matlock, the head of the family, into the fray. This just got even more and more convoluted.
This story was actually Charles Bingley coming to his senses and realizing that he does love Jane and wants her back. He learns of the subterfuge of his sisters and accepts Darcy’s apology for his part in keeping Charles and Jane apart. Darcy, he could forgive, his sisters… he’s not so sure. When Caro shows up uninvited at Pemberley, that was the straw…. Caro was to soon learn a very hard lesson.
I just want to say Brava! to our author for creating this character version of Bingley. OMG!! Who was this guy? I love, Love him… he was so cool. I got chill bumps when he was in full command mode. I would not want to cross him in any form or fashion. In fact, placing him and our dear Colonel together was simply brilliant. They were like the enforcers of this story. Things that Darcy couldn’t or wouldn’t do, Bingley and our dear Colonel could and would with no second thoughts about it. I was amazed.
Lydia still surprised me in her wisdom… at times. Yeah, I did say that. She was right more times than she was wrong and in her youth still made mistakes.
Love was in the air and our characters started pairing off and weddings were happening all over the place. We didn’t have M/M Bennet to deal with, or the other sisters. A brief discussion of Mrs. Bennet was made but we didn’t have to hear her voice.
Rating: Trigger Warning: There was one small section at 76% that was PG-17. There was a brief discussion… of an assault. It was not graphic, but was mentioned. Someone was asked about an incident. Other than that, it was clean and a quick read.
