Young Fitz is the bastard son of the noble Prince Chivalry, raised in the shadow of the royal court by his father’s gruff stableman. He is treated as an outcast by all the royalty except the devious King Shrewd, who has him secretly tutored in the arts of the assassin. For in Fitz’s blood runs the magic Skill — and the darker knowledge of a child raised with the stable hounds and rejected by his … his family.
As barbarous raiders ravage the coasts, Fitz is growing to manhood. Soon he will face his first dangerous, soul-shattering mission. And though some regard him as a threat to the throne, he may just be the key to the survival of the kingdom.

Robin Hobb is a master storyteller. The entire Assassin series are some of the most treasured books I’ve ever read and have a permanent place on my bookshelf. Fitz and the Fool are probably my most favorite book characters ever (next to Atticus Finch). Hobb’s talent for world building is unparalleled, and her ability to draw you into the …
I was sad to have finished the trilogy. I really liked the characters and how the author didn’t take the easy way out. The characters stayed true to themselves and the storyline even when I would have liked them to have made better choices (just like real people!) It was a satisfying set of books and I can’t wait to start the next trilogy.
I stumbled on Robin Hobb by Reading the Fitz and The Fool trilogy which is the latest in the world of Farseer, so I had to go way back to the beginning which lead me to Assassins Apprentice.
Audiobook on Libby. The story is quite slow but it was good to come into contact with FitzChivalry from his very beginning, The writing is great of course, …
I don’t know why I hadn’t read this book earlier. If you are a fantasy lover like me, this book is for you. Robin brings the world alive and you can smell it, taste it, and see it. I wish I had her skills as a writer to describe the scene for our senses. I liked how there are many short stories within the larger arc, so the world building happens …
The story is great and the writing is a joy.
I love Robin Hobb’s books, but both trilogies based on Fitz are amazing in my mind. I could read them over and over, and I have. Fitz is a great character and I love how he grows and changes over the stories. This first one is full of action, self-discovery, and loyalty. I would recommend all of the books based in this world (and I have) to …
I’d give it 5 stars if the series ended differently.
read the whole series!
Incredibly tragic story from a gifted writer. You have to read the entire trilogy before you find any happiness. Still a great story.
I liked it because she is an intelligent writer. It makes a big difference, especially in fantasy. There are a lot of two bit writers in fantasy and I don’t read them.
Decent read. I want to read the next in the series. =)
Just everything you want in a fanta sy book…truly just great
I read many fantasy books and this is one of the best series, I couldn’t put it down. Complex characters, exciting plots, not pages and pages wasted on describing battles (not my jam) or too much focus on romance. I adore with the characters who are flawed and lovable. The story is so , so good. I’ll be reading everything Robin Hobb has written.
Hobb is a very good writer. This entire series was terrific and I read them all…wish she would write another series
My son is the reader for this series. He has loved it!
I loved this book and series that followed. Well written and I grew to love the characters.
This is the 1st book in a series that involve the character of “Fitz”. It is fascinating and you become involved very quickly in all of the people connected withe Fitz. There are several trilogies that tell the continuing saga of Fitz and his life from a young boy to an old man. It is a really good read for anyone who is interested in in-depth …
A very good story, the start of a very rewarding series of 6 books. I read it years ago when it was written and read the sequels as they came out. I am going to read it again when I have time. Recommended.
This is my favorite series of all time. Great characters and relationships, and a lot of angst and heartache interspersed with love, magic, and beauty.
Since I just wrote a negative review of George RR Martin, allow me to say that I think Robin Hobb is one of the good fantasy writers out there. I love this series. Although not so much at the very end, i.e. the most recent book.
