Ashton Fenwick was raised to be the bastard older brother–the charming, happy bastard older brother. Now, an earldom has been foisted upon him, and his family urgently needs him to find and marry the right countess. With charm at the ready, Ashton is prepared to go wife-hunting during the London social Season, but it’s the forthright landlady at Ashton’s lodging house who catches his eye.Matilda … eye.
Matilda Bryce bakes delicious apple tarts and does not suffer titled fools, even as she looks after street urchins and does what she can to help Ashton prepare for the challenges before him. Ashton soon realizes that somebody is out to destroy Matilda’s happiness, and if he offers to make an honest countess of her, she could well flee. He’s found the woman for him, though, and will risk all to free Matilda from her past.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo! This series can’t be over! This was a great ending for the series. Thank goodness there will be more Windhams in our future. I loved Ashton in Hadrian’s book, so I was thrilled that he did his own book justice. If you’re ever in trouble, you need a guy like Ashton for your hero. I adored his interaction with his love Matilda. I was really touched by his dealings with the little hellion Helen. And I was excited that I got to see Hazelton, Asher and Maggie again.
I feel like I’m losing good friends when I finish a series I love. Here’s hoping we’ll see our Lonely Lords again.
I always enjoy Grace Burrows and this was no exception. She has good character development and her books are edited well which is always a plus.
I loved the humor in this book as well as the story and characters
I just finished reading this book and throughly enjoyed it. Ashton was in a previous novel and deserved to have his story told. Once again, he is looking out for others and following the beat of his own highland drum.
This story is missing something. I couldn’t connect with her. She was stand offish. And he’s was charming. Couldn’t figure how he loved her. Helen was a hoot. Great character.
A story of Ashton and Matilda. It kept my attention and had some mystery to the story. Nice read.
meh
I have enjoyed several of Grace Burrowes books but this one was just OK for me. Not sure exactly why. Writing isn’t bad, characters are good and the story line is alright too. Maybe it was just more of the same for me.
Grace Burrowes is without peer in the Regency genre. She simply is the best at what she does.
Very easy read. Great author.
My kind of hero- FLAWED
I really enjoyed it. Usually within the first three pages I will know if I like a book, but this one was instantly. Good read.
Romance with tenderness! Nicely done.
There’s very little not to like in a Grace Burrowes book. Her male character Ashton is both tough and tender without being mushy. I especially like her keeping us in suspense after he meets with the king. Thanks too for giving us a little epilogue. I always appreciate the extra.
Parts are bogged down in unneeded detail. Overall, good read.
What a keeper! Definitely on my must read again shelf. Author is one of my favorites but this is by far authors best effort. Genuine growth in the main characters and you can’t help but care about them. Wished for sequel or series. It’s not too late !! Hint hint.
Great read
It’s interesting to find someone who has such a rise in their life & way of life but they really don’t want it.
Love this romance novel. Excellent author.
Fun banter with some suspense
I began this book prejudiced, since I love every thing by Grace Burroughs I have read. This book did not disappoint, and in fact it moved to near the top of my favorites. Witty, intelligent writing, from a lady who writes like she grew up in that time with those people. If you have not had the pleasure of reading Ms
Burroughs, this would be a great one to begin with.
