Ashton Fenwick was raised to be the bastard older brother–the charming, happy bastard older brother. Now, an earldom has been foisted upon him, and his family urgently needs him to find and marry the right countess. With charm at the ready, Ashton is prepared to go wife-hunting during the London social Season, but it’s the forthright landlady at Ashton’s lodging house who catches his eye.Matilda … eye.
Matilda Bryce bakes delicious apple tarts and does not suffer titled fools, even as she looks after street urchins and does what she can to help Ashton prepare for the challenges before him. Ashton soon realizes that somebody is out to destroy Matilda’s happiness, and if he offers to make an honest countess of her, she could well flee. He’s found the woman for him, though, and will risk all to free Matilda from her past.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and immediately purchased and read the next book in the series. Not your average romances.
I really enjoyed this book. I really enjoyed the characters.
Great character development and evolution throughout. Some surprising plot twists.
Another Grace Burrowes hit – she never fails! Fantastic characterization – a real page turner. Always enjoy Burrowes’ stories.
I prefer Grace Burrowes early books, i.e., the entire Windham series, as the characters and stories seemed more fully developed.
I always enjoy how Grace Burrows develops her story line and characters. She works in some excellent memorable secondary characters as well.
I loved the beginning chapters in which Lord Ashton is set upon by a street urchin and ends up at the boarding house of the kind Mrs. Boyle. Their subsequent romance goes through several twists and turns but I was charmed by these two characters.
Story development is at a believable pace and realistic. Grace Burrowes is a talented writer who creates characters about whom one cares, stories that are believable, and dialog that is intelligent and clever. Somewhere in her stories there is always laughter.
Great story and strong main characters. I loved the dialogue. Supporting characters were also instrumental and making this a wonderful, witty and entertaining story
Perfect length…drama with mature resolutions instead of infantile emotional over drama…humor & HEA yet the characters had to work for it.
I enjoyed the Grace Burrowes Duke of Moreland family series. This is a peripheral book in the same world. The H and h are likeable and engaging. There is danger and excitement along with a scene stealing youngster. Highly recommend.
I try to stick with books that don’t contain explicit sex, and was disappointed that this one “snuck in” on me.
Predictable. The characters were to modern in the thoughts and behaviors for the time period, but interesting enough story line. I only found 3 typo mistakes.
Didn’t give 5star, it took awhile to get into story line.
All you have to do is read the first line and you will be hooked! Just fun and with the guaranteed happy ever after, it is not so difficult to plow through the “scary” parts.
love all her books – great characters and many connections among her books
I really liked this book. The story was original and well written. There were no typos which I look for when reading. This is the 3rd book by this author that I have read. Keep writing!
As with many of her books, I really enjoyed this book.
Fast easy read with plenty of romance
