From the #1 New York Times- and USA Today-bestselling author of the Rosemary Beach and The Vincent Boys series, Abbi Glines delivers another smoldering, compulsively readable YA romance with As She Fades. On the night of her high school graduation, Vale McKinley and her boyfriend Crawford are in a terrible car accident that leaves Crawford in a coma. They were supposed to spend the summer … a coma. They were supposed to spend the summer planning for college, for a bright future full of possibility. Together. Instead, Vale spends long days in the hospital, hoping Crawford will awaken.
Slate Allen, a college friend of Vale’s brother, has been visiting his dying uncle at the same hospital. When he and Vale meet, she can’t deny the flutter of an illicit attraction. She tries to ignore her feelings, but she’s not immune to Slate’s charm. Slowly, they form a cautious friendship.
Then, Crawford wakes up . . . with no memory of Vale or their relationship. Heartbroken, Vale opts to leave for college and move on with her life. Except now, she’s in Slate’s territory, and their story is about to take a very strange turn.
Glines’ millions of fans will adore As She Fades, a novel as romantic as it is full of twists and unexpected turns.

I really enjoyed “As She Fades” by Abbi Glines. I’ve been a huge fan of this author having read every book she has released. This was a great stand-alone novel and I loved the twists and turns of this story. I didn’t see the plot twist coming and I’m somewhat torn in my feelings about it. I was enjoying the path that part one was taking us on so when part two came along – I was skeptical. However, I did come to enjoy it and by the end of the book, I was sold on it.
Overall – a great entertaining read and a great addition to your book collection.
Happy Reading…enjoy!
As She Fades is a low angst, sweet romance with a twist that explores the connection between dreams, reality, and fate.
Both Vale and Slate are taken on a journey of self-discovery during the events of this book. Vale must unearth what she likes, dislikes, and wants out of life. Slate contemplates letting go of the unsatisfying, lonely life he was living and embracing the man he is underneath the swagger and reputation. As the book went on, I could really tell that Vale and Slate had an immediate, unspoken sort of connection that felt a lot like kismet. I would’ve loved to see more of them together!
I’ve probably said it before, but I just love how Abbi writes her characters. I’ve come to expect an emphasis on the value of family, true and enduring love stories, small-town atmospheres, and characters of quiet strength and integrity when I read her books. As She Fades had all of it.
*5 Stars*
This book was awesome. I was really getting into the story, getting to know everyone, particularly Vale and Slate, and then it threw me for a huge loop. I really did not see that coming!
I really liked Vale. She had really great character development, and was easily likeable. Slate was also a character that had a lot of hidden depth, and was worth getting to know.
I can’t really say much without giving away important parts of the storyline, so I’ll just say I was hooked on this from the start, it kept me guessing, and I loved it.
This is a story of lifelong friends. Vale & Crawford grew up together. They easily transformed from young friends into boyfriend & girlfriend and soon to be college sweethearts. Except one fateful night……
“On the night of her high school graduation, Vale McKinley and her boyfriend Crawford are in a terrible car accident that leaves Crawford in a coma.”
Vale waits faithfully at Crawford’s bedside. She reads to him and encourages him to wake up. While waiting to visit Crawford she meets her brother’s fraternity brother, Slate Allen. Slate is gorgeous, and a player. Slate is at the hospital visiting his dying uncle. He sometimes takes turns reading to Crawford. Reluctantly Vale forms a friendship with Slate which turns into a growing attraction…….
“You know what. I like us. We work. I just can’t be more than what we are.”
“What are we, Slate?”
“Friends. Really damn good friends.”
As the summer passes Vale must make a decision. She does not want to leave Crawford and the life they planned. They were going to go off to the same college. That was their dream. Their plan. But after spending almost all of the summer at Crawford’s bedside, the time has come. She heads off to college at the urging of family and friends. After all, Crawford would want her to go forward and live her life. She begins to realize that plans change, life changes……
Abbi Glines weaves a beautiful tale of love and loss with an amazing twist that I never saw coming. I am so glad I did not read the spoilers! It was a truly wonderful story to read. And that twist….. As I said above, I never saw that coming!
What a wonderful surprise! I really enjoyed this story. I felt that it was different from her other stories. Please – go in “blind” and enjoy the ride!
4.5 stars
I enjoyed “As She Fades” so much that I literally couldn’t put it down. I read the entire book in about 12 hours. When the book finishes I was sad that it was over. I want to know more about the characters, what happens next. Books that I cannot put down are my absolute favorite books!
I loved this book. It was well written and had a great twist!
As She Fades is a sweet and entertaining story. It’s about relationships and changes. It has a catalyst for change that gives new perspective to the main character. It has a great cast of characters with their own…quirks. The characters are adorable, sweet, and exactly what you wish for. Uncle D might just be my favorite.

Unusual YA drama involving two characters, Vale and Slate. ( three main characters but the third, Crawford, was never developed.) Vale and Slate were likeable and relatable for me. Slate and Vale’s families were also enjoyable characters; Crawford’s mother wasn’t. The story was good, not great. Then came the second half! Totally unexpected and not necessary. A three star read became 2 1/2 stars.
