Desire. Longing. Anguish. Action.
Ares is book one in a brand new series the Guardians of Hades by Felicity Heaton. Oh my, what a tale Ms. Heaton has constructed. This was an exceptional start.
We are treated to a story full of Greek Mythology that has been splendidly done. The author has added in some extraordinary new twists for the reader to explore.
In this story we focus on Ares. I enjoyed how the author portrayed him. He fights a never ending battle; along with his brothers to protect humans. His duty and his desire war inside him. I love the battle inside; between duty and heart. It was beautiful done.
Megan well she is not quite human. She knows she is different, but doesn’t know why. One decision will change her life and enlighten her. It was fascinating to learn about her, who she is, and more.
Ares and Megan are good together. I like how they have this attraction, but don’t act on it until quite later in the book.
The only thing that bothered me (probably only me) was the lack of showering/clean clothes for Megan. I think it was like two maybe three days. I have this thing about hygiene and well she had a bathroom with a shower their and didn’t use it.
We are also introduced to the brothers, each are unique in their own way. They are the protectors/Guardians of different gates in different places. The Guardians / brothers are all deliciously intriguing and I can’t wait to read each and everyone of their stories. It’s a surprise on who their family is and one you will enjoy learning about.
Their is no shortage of surprises and reveals, but their is much more to come. The battle scenes are vivid and the action is non-stop on the go. A war is coming and only the immortal Guardians can save us and their world.
If you enjoy Mythology, demons, battles between one’s duty and heart, and the lengths we go through for siblings and those we love, then you will adore this tale. I throughly loved the new twist on Greek Mythology, the Guardians, the plot, and romance. I’m enthusiastic to see where things go from here.

Ares is the Lord of Fire and he and his brothers have been banished to Earth, they each guard a gate to the Underworld. One night Ares fights a daemon that somehow takes his fire power. He meets Megan, a woman who can heal people. Megan is alone due to her powers but when Ares saves her, she’s about to find out more than she wanted to know. Ares hasn’t been with a woman in centuries and can finally get close to one with burning them alive. Ares brothers believe he should take Megan home and forget her but Ares wants to remember what it’s like to hold a woman again. While trying to find the daemon that took his power, the sparks fly between Ares and Megan but Ares is afraid she won’t be with him after his fire comes back. Will Ares have to choose between his duty or the woman he has fallen for?
There were a couple of times that I was totally confused but I kept reading. Action.
Sex.
Cliffhanger. small one.
A new series from one of my favourite authors.
Megan has always wondered why she was different from other people! She could heal with her hands! She knew no one else was like her, so she hid her talent, wandering from place to place trying to find answers…..
Ares is the son of Hades, banished here centuries ago, to guard a gate to Hell, he never wanted the job, thank goodness he’s not alone, his brothers are in different parts of the world guarding their own gates. A call will have them coming to one another’s aid at a moments notice (they can teleport or “step” as they like to call it)
Megan and Ares meet by accident, she’s in the wrong place at the wrong time. A witness to a battle that mortals have no idea is going on.
After being wounded by the Daemon, Ares is found by two of his brothers, they assume Megan is responsible, but after questioning her, they realise she wasn’t to blame. But she does have answers to their questions, so they take her back to Ares’ home.
Ares wakes to find his power gone….
He’s always been able to call fire on command, but after the battle with the daemon, Ares doesn’t have it!!
He’s unsure as to how or why, and he needs it back, he might have wished he could touch things or people without burning them, but now the power is gone, he misses it…..
So Ares along with Megan and his brothers begin their search for the daemon that took it. But there is more going on than just stealing powers….
And the more time Ares spends with Megan, the more he questions wanting his power back!
But if he doesn’t get his powers back, his gate might fall, and if that happens, the world as we know it will cease to exist. In its place will be a Hell on earth!!
The sons of Hades won’t let that happen. But if Ares gets his powers back, he won’t be able to touch his brothers or Megan!
Loved this book. Really well written, it flows off the page into your mind so easily, that you form pictures in your mind, and create the scenes as they happen. The characters are great, a careful balance of warrior and wounded soul (after almost three hundred years of not touching someone, it had to have had a lasting effect) and the anger they have with their father is very palpable (why can’t they go home? Why can’t they visit?)
And I love the interaction that they have with Persephone (their mother) she loves her sons so very much, and tries to guide them as much as she can.
The difficulties between Ares and Megan are well thought out….
We also get a little background lesson…..
Gods exist (Zeus, Apollo, Hades and Persephone etc)
Hellspawn are half mortal half god. They may have more than one power.
Carriers are offspring of the hellspawn (they have less power, usually just one gift)
Demi Gods are also known as hellspawn, not a name commonly used.
It’s a great way to start a series. And I can’t wait to read more on the brothers.
And find out what’s going on with the daemon’s.
And did you catch they had a sister? Where is she?
I’m a complete PNR junkie but lately I’ve found myself reading more contemporary romance than anything else (don’t get me wrong, that’s not a bad thing) so it was a delight to read ARES and be reminded just exactly what it is about #paranormalromance that I love!
Felicity Heaton was one of the first PNR authors I discovered when I stumbled upon the genre and from the first book I read I was sucked in to her world. Her writing is fantastic, her heroes are hot, fierce and protective, a bit growly and positively possessive of their lady loves but are also often a bit busted and broken (and c’mon, let’s face it, who doesn’t love a sexy book boyfriend that we think we could fix given half the chance?), her heroines often have their own issues to deal with but they’re also pretty kickass; strong, feisty and likable.
Ares and Megan were from two very different world but they had more in common than they’d have thought. Literally from their first meeting they felt a strong connection and attraction but both had a secret and their own reasons why they felt they shouldn’t act on their feelings.
I loved Megan, she was brave, determined, feisty and she knew what she wanted and was prepared to fight for it. Ares was a fabulous hero and definitely a new favourite BBF of mine from Felicity. He was drawn to Megan even before he lost his powers but he battled with what he knew he wanted for himself and what he knew was expected of him and due to the loyalty he felt to his brothers and the promise he had made to his father we were, for a time, unsure which path he’d choose; would it be with his heart or with his head.
This story was packed with everything you’d expect from Felicity. Great likable lead characters, a good supporting cast, humour, action and adventure, suspense, some twists and unexpected turns, loads of heat (quite literally where this pair were concerned!), romance, sexual attractions, passion and smokin’ hot sexy times!
The book is the beginning of what promises to be a very interesting and exciting story arc – one of the things I especially love with Ms Heaton’s books is the glimpses of the bigger picture that she gives us of as her stories unfold and her world building ability – even though it looks like most of the action in this series will take place in the mortal realm.
Ares is the first book in the Guardian of Hades series and I’m really looking forward to finding out more about the other brothers and how they’re gonna find the loves of their lives!
A definite red hot 5* read. A must for paranormal romance lovers.
Duty or heart’s desire?
—>>> Review Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars – Good premise to this story, and we see the potential for real evil as these seven God-princes protect the gate between mortals and the Underworld as well as the struggle for Ares between duty and following his heart’s desire. While all brothers have hints at their backstories included in this first book, we also have some POVs from them other than Ares’ and Megan’s. The descriptions of many of the locations and events were very well described but perhaps this took away from the flow of the story and dialogs somewhat. I had expected more direct interaction between Hades and Ares, but it was interesting to see their mother being more proactive with their sons.
Book one in the Guardians of Hades Romance Series a well written story that held my interest throughout. Prince of the Underworld and Lord of Fire, Ares meets mortal Megan. She has powers of her own and evil is after her. There is suspense, drama, danger, twists, turns, healing, fire, ice, a villain, and romance. I want to read the next book. I recommend this book.
Start of a new series and first the criticism some times the book dragged especially the sex scenes maybe a little too detailed and drawn out but hey that is a personnel opinion
This is the story of Ares he is a guardian of Hades and is main problem is that he cannot touch anyone due to the fact that he is fire personified Megan has her own problems but maybe they will be the salvation of one another She may heal him and he may be her salvation Wondering how the rest of the series will go
