Archangel’s War is book twelve in the Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh.
In the last book we where left on a cliffhanger ending and the fate of Elena and Raphael was undetermined. I would definitely recommend reading this series in order. This novel has many different POV’s at the begging and they revolve around Raphael and Elena who are the main couple of the Guild Hunter series even though we do get other couples featured throughout the series. It was great to get the different perspectives, but it also slowed the story down.
Raphael and Elena’s romance continues to develop and bloom even though we’ve technically seen many HEA for them. I enjoying seeing their growth and development.
We are also treated to many surprises in this novel and I’d love to tell you about them, but it’s more fun and exciting to be shocked. As for the end; where it goes from here is wide open. I’m curious to see what surprises, emotions, and adventure Nalini Singh will treat use to.
Narration: Justine Eyre continues to narrate this series and I love how she brings out the voices and emotions on each of the characters. I will say I’m glad I listened to this novel and didn’t read it. I feel if I’d read it would have taken me longer. Why I say this is because; this one was slow at the start and listening made the slowness of the beginning move along. Things didn’t pick up until war comes and that was maybe 80% in. I continue to enjoy the audio for the Guild Hunter series and highly recommend the audios.
Rated: 4 Stars
This series is tied for my favorite of all time! Of course, her other series is what it’s tied with!!
I didn’t get a chance to read this latest in Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series until last month, and I wish I’d realized that it takes off on the same page where Archangel’s Prophecy ends. As it is, the first time I read it, I could tell just a few chapters in that I should have refreshed my memory on the final chapters of Archangel’s Prophecy. Unfortunately, at that point I was so caught up in this absolutely mesmerizing story that I had to finish it, go back and reread Archangel’s Prophecy, and then read ARCHANGEL’S WAR one more time. With memory refreshed.
It was wonderful the first read through, but absolutely riveting the second time, knowing how Elena and Raphael had reached this point where the world is in chaos as the Cascade power surges, forcing changes that are even beyond the realm of the Archangel’s understanding. I love Singh’s voice—her prose is like well-formed poetry and I find myself so caught up in the rhythm of her words that the images I see are beautifully clear, the voices powerful, and the action physically exhausting to read. It really is an immersive experience in fiction and Singh’s imagination is limitless.
The best part, though? The love that Raphael holds for his guild hunter is the power that binds this series together. There is no doubt between them, just the steadfast loyalty, one to the other. I can’t get enough of these characters and this series.
I know that if/when this series comes to an end, I will mourn the loss of imaginary characters who have become absolutely real to me, and then I’m going to go back to that very first book that hooked me so long ago and read all of them all over again. As for now, I’ve got Singh’s A MADNESS OF SUNSHINE staring at me from my bookcase, and I’m really looking forward to finding another world formed in Nalini Singh’s amazing imagination.
I’m sure it’s obvious that I will recommend anything this author writes. Her talent is without rival within every genre she writes, and I’ve yet to read anything of hers that hasn’t totally captured me from the beginning—and held on until the very end.
I love this author! And this series is why I love her so much.
Twelve stars. Or maybe twenty.:) Oh, my God, I thought she couldn’t get better! I was wrong! Nalini Singh is an incredible world builder. I’m in awe of what she accomplished, especially in this book. If you’ve read the Guild Hunter books I suspect you’ll love this latest. If you haven’t, you’re missing something special!
I waited for this book to come out and wasn’t disappointed by it one bit! If you haven’t discovered Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series, then be sure to check them out! You won’t be disappointed!
I absolutely love this series!
Archangel’s War is an explosive, addictive, wild ride. I’ve always praised Nalini Singh on her world-building—her attention to detail is intense and her ability to pay of the smallest of clues years after they’re first seeded in first-rate—and this book is another prime example of what she is capable. Long live this series!
5 stars – I loved it!
This book was non-stop action and I couldn’t put it down. This book picks up right where the previous book left us hanging. Raphael and Elena awaken from their slumber to find that they both have changed and that war is coming. Elena is constantly dealt with changes in her body during this series and it happens so much more in this book alone. It’s really surprising that she hasn’t had a breakdown from her body changes alone. I did like the new wings though.
The battle against Lijuan finally happens in this book (obviously from the title). The battle was captivating and very emotional. It was heartbreaking to see so much death and destruction but it was great seeing everyone stand together to fight. I couldn’t put the book down once it started and I still can’t get over that it finally happened.
I will be really interested in seeing how the Cadre will deal with the cleanup and infection that was unleashed during this war. It will also be interesting to see how the Cadre will change after this war since they did have casualties and are dealing with so much destruction.
This book! Oh, the glorious feeling of awaiting a book for many months and not having it disappoint me even a little! I was in raptures over Archangel’s War from the dizzy, effervescent deep love affair between an archangel and his Guild Hunter, to the reshaping of their lives and the devastating changes wrought by the Cascade, and into an unavoidable confrontation for the survival of their world against the archangel who, through darkness and evil, has ascended into the most powerful being alive. This one was for all the marbles and it didn’t disappoint.
Archangel’s War is the 12th in the Guild Hunter series. While it did crossover into paranormal romance territory and delivered some individual romances, it is ultimately urban fantasy and has a strong series arc that needs to be read in order.
In Archangel’s Prophecy, the last book, things looked very dire for Raphael and Elena. There is a strange prophecy from a sleeping Ancient, cataclysmic events, and Elena’s physical deterioration that threatened to unravel her archangel. Raphael makes a last ditch unheard of decision and we were left not knowing what would come of it or the critical intel of Lijuan and the darkness and disease in China.
Because of this book being pretty much a spoiler for book eleven, I want to stop and give no further details of the summary. I would also recommend that readers go into this one without reading the summary because I felt this book was that much more exciting and intense not knowing even those few hints in the blurb.
So, Archangel’s War…
It felt like a grand finale. Is it? I don’t know. Let’s just say the series arc and secondary series arcs have been completed so if it does continue, there will be a new season and series arc. There is room for more when it comes to personal stories, obviously. And, a surprising twist in the family situation for one of Raphael’s seven might very well be where that goes. Whew, yeah, Elena’s ‘Bluebell’ got thrown a real curve in this one.
But, back to the grand finale feeling…
I loved how things got very dire and the Cascade was at it’s violent, most chaotic worst. There is finally an interesting explanation for why the Cascade even happens along with backstory from Raphael’s life with his parents that was neat. The enemy is strong and crosses so many lines into the depths of evil that I wanted each torturous action to be leveled that direction even if it meant making them have to be brought back and destroyed over and over until they felt all their own pain.
Great villain!
And, because there is a horrific evil then it made the stakes high for those who had to find a way to win against the odds. This book builds slowly and then gets rolling faster and faster until that long roiling and building climax that was given all the grandeur it needed to be worthy of archangel’s doing battle and carrying their people into battle with them.
As usual, I loved getting Raphael and Elena as the focus pair, but I didn’t have to miss out on all the regular surrounding cast of her family, her Guild Hunter family, his Seven lieutenants, the Cadre, and more. Raphael might have been a cold being before Elena, but he chose good people and was as loyal to them as they, to him. It never stood out more just what an amazing leader he was even at what was considered a youthful age for an archangel because of his choices. He chose a different path from the other archangels with his friends and people as well as his choice to love a mortal turned angel and this is what helps him fight the temptation to wield the Cascade power for selfish gain and personal power. This is where Elena may be barely into her angel immortality and be much weaker than other angels, but her role in keep Raphael anchored and be a true partner in everything to him is precious and part of their romance.
All in all, Archangel’s War delivered a long, gritty battle with losses and victories as well as personal battles and a romance for the ages. Guild Hunter fans will find this unputdownable as I did, I have no doubt. Urban Fantasy fans need to grab up this series and prepare to binge.

Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s darkly passionate Guild Hunter world, where human-turned-angel Elena Deveraux, consort to Archangel Raphael, faces a new challenge that threatens the balance of the world.
Wings of silver. Wings of blue. Mortal heart. Broken dreams. Shatter. Shatter. Shatter. A sundering. A grave. I see the end. I see. . . .
The world is in chaos as the power surge of the Cascade rises to a devastating crescendo. In furiously resisting its attempts to turn Elena into a vessel for Raphael’s power, Elena and her archangel are irrevocably changed. . .far beyond the prophecy of a cursed Ancient.
At the same time, violent and eerie events around the world threaten to wipe out entire populations. This war could end them all.
Will the changes they feel be enough against the goddess of death…
After the tearful and moving previous installment, this book was a breath of fresh air like the following tale after Archangel’s Blood.
Broken, at to death’s door Elena and Raphael rise to become even more than they were before.
This one is like a mirror of the previous book, while the sadness was growing in tension as Elena was deteriorating, here the tension is first about whom they have become and then the culminating peak of the cascade.
The world will awaken different and new after this battle, a long awaited one. One built since the very first book.
The first part was exalting, while Elana steps in her new body, going with the changes she endured because of the cascade.
Raphael is of course Raphael, after the ultimate choice he made in the last book, he too is driven to the next level, and must battle his own demon.
But Elena and only Elena keep him grounded when power thirst could easily drive him to madness like Lijuan.
A longer than usual book, to built the tension to the epic battle that will reshape this world, with new faces and many new possibilities.
And while it was accelerating to follow Elana taking back control of her world post the chrysalide time, I found the fight part was too long, dragging on, I can’t really pinpoint it but it was like a feeling it was lacking, with all the forces conjured in one place, it had not the potency of the previous one.
And this book has too many similarities with previous events.

This is the most intense story out of all the books in the series. Not going to lie, I was a little scared for Raphael’s people. The Cascade is throwing curveball after curveball and the world is in a chaos. This dark, powerful world unleashes one of the most epic battles to have gone down in history! I devoured this book in its entirety in just a few short hours. I don’t think I’ve ever been so on edge from a book. You don’t want to miss the events of the Archangel’s war.
I have finally caught up on the Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh. I’ve wanted to catch up on this series since I read the first book in 2014. I’ll be able to dive right into the next release this year (2020). Heck Yes!!!
If you read Archangel’s Prophecy, then you know that Nalini Singh left readers with a cliffhanger. I couldn’t wait to dive into Archangel’s War to find out what would happen to Elena and Raphael.
I don’t want to give anything away for readers that have not read this book yet, so here are some things I enjoyed about this book.
1. The relationship between Raphael and Elena and how no-one and nothing can get in between them. Not even the Cascade. They are unstoppable, and these two love each other unconditionally. You can see it in this book, as well as the previous books in the series. This book, though, proves they would rather die together instead of life without the other. Be prepared for lots of twists and turns with these two, especially after the previous book’s cliffhanger.
2. Nalini Singh throws in other twists in this book that left me in shock. One of them dealing with my favorite angel (as well as other readers). Our Bluebell and his mother, known as the Hummingbird. Hummingbird has a fierce, strong side.
3. I loved the action-packed scenes between Raphael, Elena, Raphael’s Seven, and the other Cadre against Lijuan and her forces. They didn’t ever give up. Lijuan was determined to kill them all. Readers thought Lijuan was horrible in earlier books; you haven’t seen anything yet. She is one wicked Archangel who needs to be killed already. I think she is by far one of the worst villains I’ve ever read in PNR.
4. There are other Archangel’s and Ancient’s that make an appearance in this book that were fascinating. I hope some of them get their books. One of the Ancients was introduced in the previous book, and I found her entertaining.
I could go on and on many other things that I loved about this book, but the review would be too long. Nalini Singh did not disappoint with the twelfth book in the series. I was turning the pages quickly because I needed to know what happened next in the book. (I’m a fast reader.) I love Nalini’s writing style because all of her scenes are vivid in detail. Now I’m anxiously waiting for the next book to release in November.
Overall, this book receives five stars from me, and I highly recommend it to readers of the PNR/UF genres. If you haven’t read any of Nalini Singh’s books, then when are you waiting for, get to it! I’m so glad I made time to read this series, and I’ll have to catch up on the other books Nalini has written now.
Unbelievably good read…
The Guild Hunters are back and I couldn’t wait to find out what was next for everyone and especially Elena and Raphael! The cliffhanger from Archangel’s Prophecy was ridiculously cruel (in the best reading way of course) so finding out what was next was critical to my fictional world well-being. No joke! And now… I want to tell ALL the secrets. Or at least hint at them so you can savour all the revelations yourself.
Elena and Raphael’s journey took another crazy, dangerous turn and this turn meant the whole world was at stake. How it unfolded was sinfully good reading as the bond between the courageous ex-mortal and her devoted Archangel deepened. I love these characters. Elena’s deprecating humour, the vulnerability she shared with few while her strength and intelligence were used for the good of all. Raphael is the quintessential alpha male with a scary strong exterior hiding the melt-iness he felts for those he loves. Especially his Elena… *swoon*
This instalment felt like two wonderful books in one. The first half had Elena and Raphael at its core. To say I could feel the love they shared is an understatement. Their beautiful intimacy was on full display and invited the reader (happily me!) to share in it with them. With their family around them (both blood and chosen), theirs was a heart-melting love story continued. In the second half of the book, the world exploded around them bringing so many from their world – friend and foe – shoulder to shoulder once again. Fighting the clock and a puzzle they were determined to solve, it was all hands on deck in a stunning battle where the winner was anything but assured…
If you are a fan like me this will feel like it was – reading candy of the highest order. If you are debating starting this series I can only say this. BEGIN NOW! These stories take me to another world where anything is possible. One I don’t want to leave after the last page is done…

This is the first book l have read in this series but that did not stop me jumping straight into the story. Two strong leading characters with a strong bond but also some snarkyness thrown in.
I will be looking for more of Elena and Raphael in the future.
The War is relentless and like all wars no winners or losers this will be a fight to the death with Lijuan maybe a new power is needed. This will indeed take its toll on all archangels even the ancients. When the dust settles the map will be redrawn.
Another great read from Nalini Singh!
This is an AWESOME book. I pray this series continues for a long time. I eagerly await the next book in this series.
By rough estimate, I have committed over 50 hours to the Guild Hunter series and have read more than 750K words. So even though the finale was basically a 300-page battle scene, momma didn’t raise a quitter. I was in it to win it.
It was worth it. A ten-book lead-up needs to tie up with a hell of a big bang. Although I admittedly skimmed some of the scenes (trying to get to the end faster to see what happens), and some of the scenes were maybe a little bit repetitive, the entire arc of the book followed the plucky underdog theme that I love. Like the previous book, this one focuses on Elena and Raphael and their fight to hold New York against the evil Lijuan. Be prepared for a bit of sadness at the end, though, because the Guild Hunter storyline is wrapped up.
OMG, this series just keeps getting better and better. In the 12th installments of the Guild Hunter series we see Elena and her Archangel Raphael trying to survive the Cascade and the Archangel Lijuin or Death as she is now known.
There is a lot going on in this book and it is action packed. We see what has happened to Elena since she went into the chrysalis and what that means for both herself as an angel but also for Raphael who seems to have loaded up on power. There is a lot going on in this book and we see characters from previous books such as Illium, The Hummingbird, The Legion and Aodhan make appearances for longer periods of time. To be honest I can’t wait to see if we get more from Illium and Aodhan as they’re my favourite. This book is basically a war book and only the strong are going to survive. There are some genuinely sad scenes in this book and it does leave you guessing on whether Elena and Raphael will survive not just the war but also the powers that they now have. Sadly, I can’t tell you too much more as it will all be spoilers, so you’re just going to have to trust me about reading this book!
This is a grip you by the butt of your pants read and fans of the series are going to love what has been written in this book. There is also enough romance and tension cutting jokes to make it a bit lighter. A must read for Guild Hunters everywhere!
Aeclari…
Here’s the long and short of it, I love this series. I have from the beginning. I had no idea what to expect when Archangel’s War opened, given how the last book in the series left off, but I was immediately drawn in and became quickly engrossed once more in Elena and Raphael’s story. In Archangel’s War, the Cascade has begun to come to a head and the Cadre must come together if they are going to defeat the deadliest force the world has ever known. In the end, sacrifices will be made, and an age-old mystery must be solved in order to overcome Lijuan and the monster that she has become. Or will she live to see another day, another battle?
Overall, this is a solid 4.5 stars. There were a few minor issues that I personally had with the story, but I will keep those to myself because at the end of the day, Singh has created a thoroughly enjoyable universe that I want more of.
