Starts a sprawling space opera series with complex issues and multi-layered plot, plus a romance. Do yourself a favor and buy book 2 when you get this one, so you can continue the adventure right away.
A very entertaining Sci-Fi-Fantasy realm work, with great characters and steady but powerful suspense building.
A well crafted compelling first book of the series, which I’ll definitely be following.
Really good story, well written, great world building in a decidedly sinister dystopian setting.
Intriguing reading as the characters appear and the story unfolds, one of mystery, action and some terrific humour sprinkled amidst.
A ragbag collection of characters, all of whom strike just the right note to add to the depth of the story.
Echoes, and not very subtle ones either, of WWII, the Nazis and the holocaust, which really added a further chilling layer to this story with its parallels.
Unlike some reviewers I enjoyed the tech explanations, which were interesting and not overdone either in complexity or frequency. It’s always fun to see how authors explain high-tech futuristic gadgetry and nothing here had me rolling my eyes in disbelief, which is incredibly common as many authors completely ignore the science portion of the ‘science fiction’ component of their story.
The humorous banter, mainly between Commander Noa and the enigma that is James, balance what could otherwise have been a much darker and dire story.
I really good sci fi story with so much creativity that really inspires me .
Watch out for this book. There are two more in the series that you will want to pay for!!
Looking for a summer read? Definitely one to check out!
Gosh. I don’t know why every science fiction fan hasn’t read this and the other novels in this series!
This what I call “real science fiction” as it occurs in outer space in the future. Action packed with interesting characters and futuristic situations. NOT fantasy characters such as werewolves, angels & demons, etc. which are usually included in this genre.
Made me want to read book 2.
It was okay. But like so many “series” you are left hanging as what happens next. It would be better if you finished an episode and if I never read the next book in the series I at least know what happened to the characters and the final incident.
Overall the book was good but the character development was hard to understand and it was slow in places.
I would recommend the book especially to someone that wants to buy the remaining books in the series.
Unusual plot that kept me readimg.
Excellent premise. I was disappointed to find out that it is the FIRST in a series because it is SO good.
well written. engages the reader in the world view. looking forward to next book in series
What an awesome space novel. I enjoyed every minute of heart pounding drama. I could see myself in each of the characters shoes. I can’t wait to read the next book. This is a must read book that will keep you turning the pages late into the nignt.
If you think a sci fi book can not be an intelligent read then you are in for a surprise. There is plenty of action but a lot more in this book than action.
There is a need for reading to understand and that is what this book does.
Archangel Down is not your ordinary sci fi book. It is a super read that goes all the way to the end. I enjoyed every part of this book and think you will too.
This book made me loose sleep and I loved it! I am anxiously waiting for the series to finish!!!!!
**** SPOILER ALERT ****
“Archangel Down: The Archangel Project : Book One” is the first book of Gockel’s that I have read. Now I’m kicking myself for not reading it sooner.
This tale is full of action, twists and while dishing up the tale the author builds a richly imagined world and does a fine job of developing the characters.
This was an entertaining and thought provoking story and I look forward to reading the follow books in the series. I would recommend this book to anyone.
I really didn’t see the twist that Gockel threw at us at the end.
In the interest of transparency: I was given a review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review.
It is my own honest opinion.
First in a sci-fi series with lots of actions and great characters.
It is always nice to stumble upon a book you really enjoy reading and keeps you coming back constantly to continue reading. I won’t say it didn’t have any issues, but I was able to ignore the issues to keep reading the book.
One of those problems is the lack of explanation into the title of the book. It is obviously the main mystery of the series, and meant to keep you reading to understand it. Though I do wish a bit more was shown about it or explained, cause as it stands it felt like it didn’t really matter much till the final section of the book.
Characters were enjoyable and unique, with some conflicts and internal issues they work through. Though I wouldn’t say they all grow very much in the book. Noa I don’t feel like changed much by the end of the book, she very much feels like the same person who started the book. James on the other hand changed a fair amount after everything happened with him, and the questioning of who/what he is. Unfortunately none of the other characters get much time at all, and are all rather basic characters.
The actual story and editing I didn’t have any issues with. The story I felt moved along at a nice pace that keeps you interested. And didn’t get too bogged down that it felt like I was wasting time reading it. Many pages are filled with internal dialogue and discussion, often repeating information that does get a bit much at times. And I personally found the editing perfectly competent and didn’t find any issues with it.
In the end I really enjoyed what I read, and will look into reading the second book at some point. With hope that the Archangel plot gets expanded upon more alongside the rest of the characters get a bit more development.
I very much enjoyed this sci-fi tale. It is action packed and full of breath taking suspense. The characters are complex and realistic; the protagonists, Noa and James, are heroic yet imperfect. The plot is fascinating but incomplete. No matter, though, because I am starting the next in series NOW!
