THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERLieutenant Eve Dallas must hunt down the deadly snipers terrorizing Manhattan in this fast-paced In Death thriller from J. D. Robb. The shots came quickly, silently, and with deadly accuracy. Within seconds, three people were dead at Central Park’s ice-skating rink. The victims: a talented young skater, a doctor, and a teacher. As random as random can be.Eve … teacher. As random as random can be.
Eve Dallas has seen a lot of killers during her time with the NYPSD but never one like this. A review of the security videos reveals that the victims were killed with a tactical laser rifle fired by a sniper, who could have been miles away when the trigger was pulled. And though the list of locations where the shooter could have set up seems endless, the number of people with that particular skill set is finite: police, military, professional killer.
Eve’s husband, Roarke, has unlimited resources—and genius—at his disposal. And when his computer program leads Eve to the location of the sniper, she learns a shocking fact: There were two—one older, one younger. Someone is being trained by an expert in the science of killing, and they have an agenda. Central Park was just a warm-up. And as another sniper attack shakes the city to its core, Eve realizes that though we’re all shaped by the people around us, there are those who are just born evil…

When I first saw the question of the week…which book I wished was longer, I thought it was a strange question because who would want a good book to be longer? We want to know the ending as quickly as possible. But then I realized that just the day before, I had told myself to read this book slowly so I could enjoy it more so I guess that qualifies.
I have read all of the “in Death” series and have never been disappointed in one. Do yourself a favor and start this series with Book 1 and you’ll be hooked just as I was.
Another great In Death book. Granted it’s the same MO in this series. It really is. But here i am forty plus books later, loving it. Perhaps it’s because i love a lot of the characters..Eve, Roarke, Peabody, Mavis etc etc. I really think that bringing this to life on TV would be great.
I loved the first three books in the In Death series, but I had trouble getting into this one. It wasn’t until the second half of the book that I really plugged in and kept turning pages. Robb introduced two great villains and a ticking clock to stop mass shootings, but it felt like those things came at the price of the relationship I enjoy so much between Eve and Roarke and between Eve and her team until the book finally found a balance between action and characters. But there are plenty of readers who probably like the tension of going from the first murder of three people, then five, and then more. Each time the killer strikes, she ups the death roll. A great portrayal of a psychopath. I just missed my favorite characters until they were finally drawn into the story more.
This is part of a series of mysteries, well worth reading! It has interesting, believable characters, a little romance, good mystery, humor, all happening in the future.
My wife has the whole series up to book #44 and they’re great. Every book has a good plot with a surprising ending. Highly recommended!
Love this series
Each of J. D. Robb’s “in Death” books is a real pleasure to read. Suspense along with some really good belly laughs makes them a DELIGHT. I highly recommend this series.
I’m sorry to say that this series has become a ‘boiler plate’ series and although I read each one to keep up with Eve and Rourke, it has become a chore to start each book. I no longer buy this series but use my local library.
This is the latest installment of the “in death” series by J.D. Robb. I am a huge fan of this series having read it multiple times from start to finish. Apprentice did not disappoint. It was full of twists and turns that kept you turning the page. It also brings out a lot of emotions in Eve. And although this story is intense, Robb continues to interject favorite characters from past books to keep it entertaining and have you laughing at times. I definitely recommend this book and wait impatiently for the next one.
So when I had won this book I had no idea it was #43 in the series.
I didn’t let it deter me from reading it though. You gotta start somewhere, right?!
I’m glad I did too! It made me want to go back and check it out from the start.
Eve Dallas is one bad-ass leuitenant! She’s smart, sassy and gets the job done. She is everything you could hope for in a character.
The other characters in the book are decent too, and compliment the story well. I did end up really liking Peabody as well. Another strong female character, who is also a cop.
I wanna punch both of the Mackie’s in the throat. Especially the dad. Like how can he justify any of his actions?! I hated him and his reasonings while I read it.
The story itself took a moment for me to get into. It’s a police procedural, which I liked, but I felt it got off track once or twice in the beginning. When the author got it back on it was a lot more addictive and I was craving to get through it and see what happens. It really came together in the end and I was left wanting more!
3.5/5
The firs one time a read a book from this series, I was not sure I would like a futuristic story like. It was great and I was hooked. Wish they came out with a TV series. Love the main characters.
Love ALL of the In Death books… J D Robb never fails me… Ruark, Eve, Peabody, Morris, all of the characters have become friends over the years…
Eve Dallas and her husband are a very interesting couple and this case is really nasty, involves a sniper. All’s well by the end, but the senseless killing is hard on those in the book.I like all of these books a lot.
Enjoyed the analytics employed by the authorities to discover shooting nests and efforts to safeguard future victims and track the killer(s).
Awesome book
I love JD Robb. The plots turn keep one questioning. The by play of the characters is fun an touching
Love this, just like I love every book in the In Death series!
J. D. Robb doesn’t write bad books
More sexual content than whodunnit which was my reason for buying. Not interested in finishing.
This is just a fairly ordinary J.D. Robb “in Death” mystery. They are decent stories that one can rely on for a fairly predictable but entertaining read.
