I like what I like most about these stories so far is how completely accepting they are of people or ideas that are outside the norm. These stories are short, not allowing a lot of time for character development or much plot.
I really loved the female lead, Gina, in the second novella. There was a lot of depth into her neuroses, fears and insecurities and I think the author did a fairly good job of portraying a transgender individual, even if I’ve never met one (that I know of). The story got me curious about a subject I’d never really taken much interest in before. Sure, I’ve known homosexuals, and transgenders have always been a curiosity to me, but I never really tried to understand it. Out of sight, out of mind. This story was about emotional renewal. Loneliness and isolation that is so often the case when you’re a little bit different, not quite the norm. Everyone tries to shove you in a box, expecting you to fit, frequently not realizing how much they hurt you in the process.
I think this one was my favorite in the series. I really liked Gina and it was so easy to see her as all female. There was a depth of character development in this story not seen in the other two.
In a world which shuns those who are different, a transgender guy by the name of Gerry has a really hard time in High School but after fifteen years decides to attend the Eastwood High reunion and this time attends as Gina. Immediately Maris, one of the bullies of the school attached herself to Gina like a limpet and started interrogating her and taunting her. Gina had attended in order to put her past behind her and to prove to herself she could move on as Gina, a strong minded woman ready to forge for herself a new future. But she was being challenged, until Himeros, the God of sexual desire steps in and pretends to be her fiancé. He had been sent by Aphrodite the Goddess of love and was immediately drawn to this woman. He who was always alone, never showing interest in the humans he was sent to help was intrigued. He and Gina made a grand exit from the reunion to have one of their best experiences of love together. She needed him physically and he needed her emotionally, so could they make this work? He gave her the acceptance she had always craved for, seeing her for the woman she was and she eased his loneliness, her strength to fight for her own identity fulfilled him. I love this very beautiful and sensitive story depicting a great understanding and empathy for a very sensitive and often painful issue for many a person facing their transition to bring forth who they truly are deep inside of themselves into a world which is often unkind to them and unaccepting. If only every transgender person could find their Aphrodite or Himeros. Well done to Jen Katemi for this amazingly intuitive book.
