Recalling Olive Kitteridge in its richness, structure, and complexity, Anything Is Possible explores the whole range of human emotion through the intimate dramas of people struggling to understand themselves and others.
Here are two sisters: One trades self-respect for a wealthy husband while the other finds in the pages of a book a kindred spirit who changes her life. The janitor at the local school has his faith tested in an encounter with an isolated man he has come to help; a grown daughter longs for mother love even as she comes to accept her mother’s happiness in a foreign country; and the adult Lucy Barton (the heroine of My Name Is Lucy Barton, the author’s celebrated New York Times bestseller) returns to visit her siblings after seventeen years of absence.
Reverberating with the deep bonds of family, and the hope that comes with reconciliation, Anything Is Possible again underscores Elizabeth Strout’s place as one of America’s most respected and cherished authors.

I found this book difficult to follow.
I feel a lot of people will relate to this book. We all think our lives as a kid are so different than everyone else’s.
Okay
Interesting characters. Author does not know and appreciate the setting as she claims she does. The plot moves slowly enough to almost make a reader lose interest.
This was a wonderful read
The characters were original and fully formed
She writes well about the human condition
I thoroughly enjoyed this book
Strouts writing is beautiful as always. However this book seems like short stories not all that well woven together. I lost track of characters and plot. Can’t recommend it.
It reads like individual short stories but the characters in each story have a connection to one another. The connection isn’t always apparent immediately so some readers will not like this format.
Terrible
Too depressing
Could not follow the characters or anything pertaining to them. confusing!
Uneven. I read half then went on to something else. I loved Olive Kitteridge but the author hasn’t been able to reproduce it in later books.
Very disappointing. This was my least favorite of the author’s books. Very fragmented and never did come together.
Strout crafts characters that I grow fond of; I anticipate scenes among family members, yet am so often disappointed by the lack of empathy and love. Even so, her novels flow so seamlessly that they are difficult to set down. The complex and flawed characters seem to be burdened by circumstances that often remain oblique. I have read all of her novels and look forward to the next one.
I kept hoping this book would get better but it didn’t. Very disappointing and Not Recommended!
Amazing author. I recommend all of her books….one of the best storytellers I’ve read. Please keep writing!!
Beautifully written; believable characters.
Lovely stories
Extremely well written. It wa as hard to put it down. A little gem of a book that stays with you.
Joy to read – insightful !
Takes a stethoscope to the hearts of the people in a small town in Southern Illinois and fills the reader with reverence.
