1907 Guthrie, Oklahoma. What or who is Emily Cabot hiding from? Hunter Henderson is home from a ten year stint with the Texas Rangers and wants to know. The Harvey House waitress has caught his eye and possibly his heart. But he knows she’s hiding something and he won’t stop until he uncovers her secrets . . . And then she disappears.
Although this is part of a series written by the fantastic Callie Hutton it can be read as a stand alone, I have to say you will want to read the rest after you finish this one to see how all the other Henderson’s found their happy ever after. Our hero Hunter has been away from home for many years working as a Texas Ranger trying to track down the man who killed his father, all the while hiding the guilt he has carried from that awful day. A recent injury forced him home where he struggles to recover, find a sense of belonging and a new job. As he tries to hold onto one of the many jobs he works at he meets waitress Emily, Hunter immediately feels drawn to the quiet, shy woman. After inadvertently causing her trouble at the restraint where she works he sets out to make things right, getting to know her along the way. As their feeling grow secrets and enemies from each of their pasts force our couple apart. A great read with twists and turns, I highly recommend this book to lovers of western romance.
I truly enjoyed this book, did not want to put it down when my chores were calling to be done. It was a great story and kept you wondering what would happen next. It was well written and easy to get absorbed into the story.
There’s more in this book than a simple love story. There’s suspense, there’s pathos and a good crime story as well. There is also violence, which is never graphic, but a gut-wrenching part of the story nevertheless. The plot is well defined and intriguing and the side characters are interesting as much as the main ones, the villain as well. The book can be read as standalone, but I think reading the other books of the Oklahoma Lovers series can be worthwhile. As for the main characters, I particularly liked the hero, Hunter, who’s very human, a tough guy, but also very vulnerable. And Emily is a sweetheart and I suffered with her throughout the book!
The book went many places, very sad. I liked the couple in this story but her life was very messed up, he truly was a knight! This was a very long book.
Enjoyed it immensely… a beautiful story… I like stories from earlier era’s… they seem much more simple, natural and romantic too… the love and the lovemaking scenes were fabulous too…. thanks for writing… your book kept me awake till the early hours…
It was a good book, predictable love story. Abused run-away wife meets someone new who eventually rescues her from her situation and all ends well Happily ever after, It is a good relaxing book to read before bedtime!
Sad yet happy ending. I recommend reading this book
Good beach/pool read
Long
Being a battered wife is hard for any woman. Running away from that life and staying hidden, always looking over your shoulder is even harder. And starting all over with a new life takes determination and bravery. But unexpected surprises can throw even the best plans into turmoil when the victim meets someone new and more deserving of her love and she sees that marriage isn’t a death sentence. A very good story.
Good story, It was fast reading because I could skip over the sex parts.

My least favorite of the series…
Blood curdling!!! I don’t usually read mysteries but I couldn’t put it down!

Very predictable!
Enjoyed the thoughts of Emily and Hunter as I read along. Also, I enjoyed the settings’ descriptions.
