In the Shadow World, he was the God of Death, and he was called many names. The monsters he hunted called him Anubis. Those who saw his face died. To Guardian Security, he was a number, a surgical weapon they wielded against monstrous evil. One woman called him Kaeden Lang. Anubis never meant her to be anything except an interlude, a moment of light in the darkness of his life, a one-time escape … escape from the ever-present haze of death. He committed an unforgivable sin—he saw her again—and again—and again. She held back the shadows that threatened to consume him.
Sky Meyers made a grave mistake six years ago. She fell in love—only to have the man she knew as Kaeden Lang disappear. Now, his daughter needed him to save her life. As the office manager for the State District Attorney, Sky accessed national databases in a desperate search for her baby’s daddy only to discover the man she knew as Kaeden Lang didn’t exist. She’d already lost the man she loved; she couldn’t lose her daughter.
Other eyes noticed Sky’s search. Abruptly recalled and informed of the existence of his daughter and her illness, Anubis slipped through the shadows to help Sky—but found death threatened more than his daughter. In her attempt to find Kaeden Lang, Sky unknowingly jeopardized his Shadow World existence by alerting an enemy Kaeden Lang can’t eliminate–only Anubis can.

Love the author. Characters are great. This book was like a spin off from Guardian.
I anxiously await any book by Kris Michaels. I love her writing, plot lines, and damaged characters who find love.
Really enjoyed it and looking forward to the next one!
Loved it just like all the books in this series. They have everything you could want in a great read.
Like this spin-off of the original series.
Anubis is the first book in the spin-off from the original Kings of Guardian series. In my opinion Kris Michaels writes the very best ex-military, private security stories of anyone else in the genre.
This world she’s built is the epitome of how I imagine brothers (and sisters) in arms watch out for and take care of each other. Anubis introduces us to some of the Shadow World characters who will share their trials and hopefully their HEAs with us, while keeping us solidly entrenched in Guardian Security. The King family will always be on my one-click list.
If you don’t know the Kings of Guardian, I highly recommend you come along and meet them all.
Thoroughly enjoyed this, I really did.
Took me a while to get in to it, both the book and the narration, but at some point I will jump into the next book, because I am intrigued by this group of people, and how they live their lives. I read the first King’s Security book and this is a spin off from that series.
4 stars across the board, for the book and the narration.
Anubis is the first book in the Guardian Security spinoff series Shadow World.
I adored Kaeden! He was a shadow, which to me is similar to good guy mercenary. Because of his job, Kaeden didn’t believe he deserved to be happy. He’d spent his life living in the shadows and never formed any bonds or relationships, with the exception of Sky. Although Kaeden loved her, he knew his presence would bring danger to Sky’s life.
Sky loved Kaeden, but she was tired of him constantly leaving. Which was why she kept a huge secret from him. Whenever their daughter becomes ill and needs Kaeden’s very rare blood type, Sky reaches out hoping he can help.
This is the second book in the Guardian world where the leading lady gets pregnant but doesn’t tell the father. I don’t like that scenario and it has always bothered me. But as I knew he would, Kaeden stepped up and realized how important both mother and child were. He promised to do whatever was necessary to keep them safe.
I like the Shadows, and am excited about reading each of their stories.
This series has great characters. The depth of change within each book is beautiful
Nice story. Anubis was interesting, but the conclusion was rushed.
This book was ok. Reading the first couple of chapters, I was excited to see where the story would go. But, unfortunately it was slow, predictable and lacked any real finesse. There was no tension, no excitement or any twists or turns. Too bad, it started out really well.
Takes all your emotions on a ride. From suspense to love to feelings of inadequacy. This book delivers
This book is quality entertainment. Very enjoyable. Hard to put down. No cliffhanger!
I would buy it again.
A great beginning to the Shadow World. Anubis aka Kaeden knows that he must stay hidden from the world in order to do his job effectively. But what happens when he finds that the one time he came out of the shadows produces a family that he now must save? Kris Michaels takes us on a journey of intrigue, secrets, revenge, love, and salvation. A wonderful read.
You are my beacon of light, shining in the darkest corner!
Another explosive book by Kris! Anubis is the spin off series from the Kings of Guardian, where we were first introduced to a couple of the men that live in the Shadows. Anubis is working a case when he is suddenly given a code to go to a safehouse, revealing to him that his cover has been compromised. Unbeknownst to him, a woman he was involved with previously, Sky, has been searching for him! Not realising that she is putting herself, him and their daughter in danger she continues on her quest to find him – until Guardian alerts him to the situation.
Can’t wait to find out more about those that live in the shadows:)
If you like a book that will keep you awake turning pages, this is the one. You won’t be disappointed – but you will be tired, in a good way.
This Kings of Guardian series spinoff has so much going for. The Shadows of Guardian that we already know, Joseph and Zane enhance the mystique of the ones we do not. I was very excited to start this new series. Anubis is a fascinating character. His rituals, given his professional choice of deadly weapons, were quite interesting. The fact that he felt he had to walk away from Sky and Kadey after all was said and done was heartwrenching. Sky’s inner strength, resolve and willingness to do whatever it took to find Kaeden was admirable. As A mother I readily identified with Sky’s determination. And Kadey? She was a delightfully charming five year old. Her reaction to figuring out Kaeden was her dad….priceless!
Lots of action and alook into a life of spying and danger. The love and relationship part not much. The author could have skipped that part altogether n it would have been a better book.
Wow oh wow – I can’t say enough about Anubis by Kris Michaels. This was one of the books that I’ve waited for an it was so worth it!!!
