I wanted him, but couldn’t find the courage to have him. You know that feeling, the one where you’re too scared to go to sleep, too scared to go out, and too scared to do anything? Ever since my assault, I’ve been functioning, but not living. That was until I met that motorcycle riding man with such a deep gravelly voice that it sent shivers down my spine. He helped me through some of the … the darkest moments of my life.

She was a cock tease pure and simple. Or so I thought. What I believed to be a game on her part, turned out to be a bone-deep fear of everyday life. We helped each other cope, and slowly our friendship turned into something more.

Circumstances broke the two of us apart just as we decided we wanted to be together. A vengeful woman sets out to ruin Max and anything he holds dear in his life. Payton has gone through so much in her life that enduring one more thing just might break her. Only Max taught Payton a few things. Never hold back. Never hesitate. Do something stupid, and always learn from your mistakes. Together, they can overcome anything.

Max and Payton’s story was one that I enjoyed. Max fell for the little firecracker that is Payton and knew that he was going to have to take things slow with her, so he doesn’t scare her away. He knows that something happened to her to make her the way that she is, and he wants to be the one that helps her become strong again. Then when he is having to leave right when he was getting his chance with her, he knows that he will return to her. Payton is surprised when she is shown that even being a world apart Max is still going to make sure that she is taken care of when she is given a service dog. Upon Max’s return there is things that begin to happen that can be the end of them before they are even able start their life together. It is the strength of their love that makes it so that they are able to bet the odds against them.
This one just like the previous two in this series is a good combination of humor and seriousness. It is this combination that I can say keeps be coming back for more.
Dang, but this story had so much heartbreak! Not only did Max have his demons, he was determined to fight the ones Payton was having a hard time facing. Once they got past their misunderstandings and assumptions, their relationship became magical.
The suspense part of this book was intense. Imagine being hunted by a lunatic for no reason. A lunatic that had no problem causing harm to kids. Yeah, it wasn’t hard to wish that Max would end the villain’s life slowly with some torture.
Payton was just as immature and childish as Cheyenne and Ember, which is really getting annoying. Please save me from what’s supposed to be funny and is instead very frustrating.
Max was such a sweetheart and an outstanding hero. He saw Payton, he wanted Payton, and he saw NO ONE ELSE once she was on his radar. I enjoyed the glimpses given of Max’s military career and I wanted to see how far the master interrogator would go.
Another highlight of this story, for me anyway, was seeing little Harleigh (from F-Bomb), Dax (from Just Kidding) and Bennett (from Kill Shot, which I haven’t read yet). I love how this author ties everything and everyone together!!
I just love Max and Payton! Their story made me laugh and cry. Payton’s quirks and how she is with her brother are hilarious. I was not able to put the book down.
You have to go read this one too, you won’t be disappointed.
This book was just a big reminder of why I love Lani Lynn Vale’s books. Max was caring, patient, and simply perfect when it came to Payton. This story has the right amount of suspense, action, mixed with sweet, tender, and steamy moments. I adored this book. Great Story!
Loved Max and Peyton’s story
Peyton Alvarez, is a tiny spitfire and one of Cheyenn’s best friends. They met in nursing school and now work together. Max took note of Peyton but has kept his distance, waiting for her to come to him.

An accident leaves Max with temporary amnesia. Peyton is there for him.
Peyton and Max became a target. A rogue CIA agent with an ax to grind against Max. No one seems to be able to find her.
Peyton and Max start to build a life together. Her family takes Max as one of their own.
Gabe and Peyton save the life of a newborn, who has ties to Sam.
Max nearly looses Peyton and their baby, when O’Hare once again comes after them. Luke, the Chief, the men of Free, and Sam’s dad aren’t going to let her escape justice.
Sam’s dad hasn’t called in his favor. Sam learns what he always thought about his dad may not be true.
Sweet and steamy romantic suspense. Great epilogue. Looking forward to the next book.
Max and Payton’s story was one I have been wanting to read. Lani Lynn Vale did not disappoint. The chemistry between these characters was explosive. The story pulled my heartstrings and left me breathless. When Payton finally decides to let Max in their story is turned on it’s head. LOVED IT!!! This is a must read book!!!
Another One Bites The Dust would have to be one of the funniest books from this series. Payton and her antics with her brother will have you laughing so hard that at times it will be hard to catch your breath. The chemistry between Max and Payton is one that you will feel soul deep and will melt your heart. A story that is packed with suspense, drama and action to go hand in hand with a passionate love story. This is my second time to devour this book and believe me when I say it was just as if not even better this time. A book that will have you on the edge of your seat, heat you up from the inside out and have your heart overflowing with the beauty that is Max and Payton’s love.
Max and Payton story is funny, loving, and also sad. It was well written and the characters are easy to love. I really love this series.
This is the third book in the Freebird series. I do recommend that you read them in order, just so you can see how the characters change from book to book and see the other relationships. You don’t have to though, each book is about a different couple. Lani Lynn Vale has turned into one of my go to authors when I need a good laugh and maybe some tears. This one came close to making me cry. The scene with Max deploying did get to me. But I just had to say my “see you later” to my husband a couple months ago. She nailed that scene. Wives and significant others trying to fight their tears so the other doesn’t see it and make it harder than it already is, for them to leave. I’ve held my tears back many times, until he couldn’t see them, while his ship was pulling out. So that scene hit home for me.
Max was injuried and he got out of the Rangers, but he healed up just fine. Now he finds himself being recalled, he doesn’t know for how long and what for….yet. But the timing couldn’t be worse. Payton is finally ready for something with him.
The helicopter scene had me worried, especially what happened to Max and his memory.
Payton is a tiny thing. She’s a nurse with Cheyenne. That’s how she met Ember, and then the guys and Max. She was attacked awhile ago and is suffering from some PTSD. Max does help her through all of it though. I love all these characters.
The shoelace scene is so something my brother and I would do to eachother. I was laughing so hard at it.
I read these series out of order, I know this is the first series, but have read the others first. So I’ve already read Bennett’s, Payton’s younger brother, story. But to see it during her book was great. It was awesome seeing a younger Bennett. We also see some of Sebastian’s past. With his accident. It is totally fine that I haven’t read all the series in order.
Max and Payton are great together. And Max and Ember (his sister) have such a funny back and forth banter that I love so much. The whole Free community is amazing. I love this series.
