An unforgettable character beloved by generations of readers Redheaded orphan Anne Shirley longs for a real home, somewhere she can truly belong. When she first arrives at the Green Gables house on Prince Edward Island, it’s everything she ever imagined. But to stay, she’ll first have to convince Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert to adopt her. And that means controlling her temper (even when Gilbert … Gilbert Blythe calls her “Carrots”), staying out of trouble (and away from hair dye), and not getting too carried away with her daydreams (though she would make the perfect Lady of Shallot floating down the river). Anne might not always get it quite right, but she does keep things interesting…
Through Anne’s eyes, the ordinary world becomes magical and every day is an adventure. She inspires the dreamer in all of us, never hesitates to say the things we wish we could get away with, and makes us cherish every kindred spirit we meet. It’s no surprise Anne is loved around the world by generations of readers.
This new edition lovingly restores the original, unabridged text and includes an all-new, exclusive introduction with special memories from L.M. Montgomery’s granddaughter.

Always a favorite no matter how many times I have read it!
Great book. Dialogue is very lively.
A great classic that still is good today for our youth to read!
This is one of those true “classics.” A book to be read again and again. Re-reding it after several decades, gave me a whole new perspective.
Love this classic. Re-read after reading it when I was a kid. I ended up getting the rest of the books! Loved the series!
I have read the entire set of “Anne ” books and loved them all. I visited Anne’s home on PEI as a young girl and become entranced by the entire atmosphere of Anne and her life. Every young girl should read these books.
A classic
meaningful story, with heart
A classic! Such a wonderful story filled with unforgettable characters in an evocative setting. Did not want it to end.
It’s a classic! I read the first book when I was 12. Later, I read all the Avonlea books. Loved them all.
Some people have comfort foods or blankets, I have comfort books. This is one of my top favorite comfort books and one of my favorite series ever. If you haven’t read it, you absolutely need to.
I read this book eons ago and loved it so i took a trip down memory lane and reread this book. A must book to read if only for some memories of your old childhood times.
Loved the vocabulary of Anne, the main character, and her ability to see the world in a magical way.
I don’t know why I have not read it already. t was very interesting and well written.
One of the best classics. A “re-read” many times over.
I truly enjoyed this book. What great characters and interesting personalities. Delightful reading. Anne of Green Gables was a truly unpredictable character.
So well written! Lovely reminder of a bygone era. Anne is a person I would have loved to meet.
Wonder why I never read it while I was growing up. A worthwhile classic.
LM Montgomery’s writing has such a sweet yet down-to-earth quality, and the ever-plucky, whimsical, and courageous Anne is a classic, enduring, and ever-lovable heroine. This book is a joy for youngsters and oldsters alike, with its nostalgic descriptions of small-town, island life in a century now past.
Another of my favorite, uplifting, and entertaining books!
