An unforgettable character beloved by generations of readers Redheaded orphan Anne Shirley longs for a real home, somewhere she can truly belong. When she first arrives at the Green Gables house on Prince Edward Island, it’s everything she ever imagined. But to stay, she’ll first have to convince Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert to adopt her. And that means controlling her temper (even when Gilbert … Gilbert Blythe calls her “Carrots”), staying out of trouble (and away from hair dye), and not getting too carried away with her daydreams (though she would make the perfect Lady of Shallot floating down the river). Anne might not always get it quite right, but she does keep things interesting…
Through Anne’s eyes, the ordinary world becomes magical and every day is an adventure. She inspires the dreamer in all of us, never hesitates to say the things we wish we could get away with, and makes us cherish every kindred spirit we meet. It’s no surprise Anne is loved around the world by generations of readers.
This new edition lovingly restores the original, unabridged text and includes an all-new, exclusive introduction with special memories from L.M. Montgomery’s granddaughter.

Anne of Green Gables and, in truth, any story by Lucy Maud Montgomery, is my go-to comfort read. Think warm apple cobbler with a scoop of home churned vanilla ice cream. That is Anne of Green Gables for me. It’s the charming, heart-warming story of imaginative orphan Anne Shirley, her adoption by spinster sister and brother team Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, and Anne’s many escapades on Prince Edward Island. If you’ve never read Anne of Green Gables, you are missing out on a real treat. A resounding 5 stars!
What can i say, this is a children’s classic.
My daughter’s favorite book, and one i enjoy as well.
Anne is an engaging heroine who is constantly getting into scrapes, but is a wonderful person.
The descriptions of the real place Prince Edward Island are spot on. How do i know? When my daughter was a teen we went on vacation to PEI and it was.lovely.
There’s a whole series of Anne Shirley novels, so once you get hooked, toy can revisit her again and again.
As an adult, my favorite character isn’t Anne, it’s the woman that adopts her, Marilla.
A beautiful book from another era.
This is a book I read in my early teen years as a school assignment. This book.was as good as when In first read it. It is the story of a young orphan girl who is sent to a farm to assist a brother and sister with chores. The farm owners are disappointed because they had requested a boy orphan who would be stronger for the farmwork. However Anne convinces them to.Give her a chance. She proves to.be very successful. The owners of the farm come to appreciate th e child’s ability to do all th e farmworkers and gets along well with other people. Eventually everyone becomes like a family and of course the ending is predictable. Since I first read this book with my mother it brought back warm and fuzzy feelings. I am now reading this book with my thirteen year old grandson and he loves it. I highly recommend this book.
This book and series got me through my school years. Anne was my favorite way to escape when real life was hard. Was an adult when PBS did a serious of it. I think they did an amazing job! T&is series is one of my favorites to gift to young girls, all my kids have it!!!
It took a while to get into the series but I fell in love with Annie and enjoyed reading about her whole life.
Wish I had read it long ago… it was popular when I was Anne’s age! But… maybe I wouldn’t have loved it then? Ageless and timeless!
I loved this book as a young girl. Still do.
This was my favorite book as a child. The whole series is good, but this one was fantastic. I should reread it!
Set in the late 19th century, this novel recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11 year old orphan girl, who is accidentally sent to two middle aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who had originally intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm. In its hundred years of existence, it has become firmly established as a classic of children’s literature. From the first moment she appears, Anne is a delightful companion for your imagination. Prepare to laugh at Anne’s blunders and accidents. Prepare to be captivated by an effortless flow of beautiful imagery, delicate humour and a swift paced narrative. The author works magic as she weaves this tale of an unloved and lonely orphan’s accidental adoption by a brother and sister who never imagined their lives could be so enriched by a little girl. Montgomery was an incredibly talented author with as much imagination and artistic style as our Anne. The story truly is a break from reality, allowing the reader to become engulfed in the mind of a young Anne with her quirky view of the world around her. It is a beautiful story of the power of love, truth, humility, forgiveness and it never grows stale. Great read overall.
Great story & writing. Loved the characters. Thank you.
Loved it when I read it as a kid and as an adult. Still a great classic.
Every girl should read this.
It makes you laugh, it makes you cry. It shows the best of mankind.
I was introduced to this book by my Aunt when I was 8 or 9 years old. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve read through it. I loved Anne Shirley, I loved the budding romance between her and Gilbert. I loved her imagination, and creativity. I wanted to be her and live in the fairy land I perceived Prince Edward Island to be.
Don’t know how I missed out on this one growing up, but so glad I found it at 48! Even at my age, I was thoroughly entertained and captivated by Anne Shirley. I couldn’t wait to get through the entire series and was so disappointed when I got to the end – I wanted more! Can’t imagine a better book for children to read – Anne’s positive and whimsical outlook on life is one that we can all benefit from, and her life-lessons are priceless. I plan to read it over again – such a charming and feel good series. Hope to share it with grandchildren one day! 🙂
This was one of my all time favorite series. Anne had the spark that lit my little world. I wanted to be just like her.
I loved this whole series. I remember saving my allowance to buy the books — and yes I have still have the books. I loved the fact that she was an orphan, that she spelled her name with an “e” and thought that was much better. Her school time friends (and enemies), the horrible accidents that happened to her, etc. Just a great series for young girls.
I just love the simple times that this story depicts. There’s just so much innocence and sweetness permeating from the characters, that I find myself coming back to this tale time and time again. It’s a lovely retreat from the complications of our world today. I love the relationship between Anne and Grandpa Matthew. It’s just really heartwarming. And I love how Anne is so kind to her grandparents while having a little spunk to her personality. Something about this book just keeps drawing me in over the years; it’s a cherished favorite that will always have a place on my bookshelf.
This had been my absolute favorite for many, many years. I read this at least once a year and every time I laugh and cry right along with Anne Shirley.
