An unforgettable character beloved by generations of readers Redheaded orphan Anne Shirley longs for a real home, somewhere she can truly belong. When she first arrives at the Green Gables house on Prince Edward Island, it’s everything she ever imagined. But to stay, she’ll first have to convince Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert to adopt her. And that means controlling her temper (even when Gilbert … Gilbert Blythe calls her “Carrots”), staying out of trouble (and away from hair dye), and not getting too carried away with her daydreams (though she would make the perfect Lady of Shallot floating down the river). Anne might not always get it quite right, but she does keep things interesting…
Through Anne’s eyes, the ordinary world becomes magical and every day is an adventure. She inspires the dreamer in all of us, never hesitates to say the things we wish we could get away with, and makes us cherish every kindred spirit we meet. It’s no surprise Anne is loved around the world by generations of readers.
This new edition lovingly restores the original, unabridged text and includes an all-new, exclusive introduction with special memories from L.M. Montgomery’s granddaughter.

3+ of 5 stars to Anne of Green Gables, the first book in a series by L.M. Montgomery, written in 1902. I read this book nearly 30 years ago and had to refresh my memory a little, before writing the review. I’d forgotten it was part of a whole series. I read more than one, but not sure which other ones. I recall this first one… a tale about an …
I am so glad I decided to re-read this book as a grownup. It’s been so long since I read it, I really didn’t remember much of the story. Before reading this book I read the prequel, “Before Green Gables” by Budge Wilson, and also “Marilla of Green Gables” by Sarah McCoy, and I think that went well for me. I loved this book for so many reasons. …
I have all of the books in the Anne of Green Gables series. I enjoyed them all, but Anne of Green Gables is my favorite.
I loved this book and I enjoyed reading it to my kids. So many heartfelt lessons about overcoming adversity and making the most of life no matter the circumstances make this story an extraordinary journey.
This was an AMAZING book, obviously everyone has read it because it is such a classic.
Wonderful to finally get the chance to read about Anne (with an E) Shirley. I found this to be such a sweet story. It holds the pureness of an uncorrupted world. Anne is so optimistic for one whose first decade of life was not the least bit easy.
I laughed through many moments, was shocked by a few and was crying like a baby in the end. All …
Anne’s imagination is wonderful. Watching her learn what is to have a family is heart warming
Loved this story.
Just simply wonderful. One of the world’s great classics!
I was young when this book came out. We read it within class. I fell in love with all of the characters. The skill to create characters that could be the person next to you, within your household. The little tiny details was what made the book stand out for me. It is so worth reading the book before watching any version of the films made from the …
Wonderful story. I hope every girl has an opportunity to read this.
Entertaining book. Takes you back to a different historical time and the series takes you through several historical times. I still reread the series, even though I am a grandma. I had the privilege of visiting The Green Gables house and the Bookstore on the family land where I walked through windy poplars.
I chose this as a revisit to my youth and was surpirsed how much better and more enjoyable today. A trip back in time for me and Anne.
I decided to read this classic because I hadn’t ever read it. I seldom do not finish a book, but put this one down after a couple hundred pages. I found it boring and silly. Not funny, just mundane. Guess I just didn’t get it.
I read Anne of Green Gables many times as a child and just finished reading as an adult after having visited the farm where the author visited as a child. You know what? It’s still a good book! Some things dates it, but she had some vital lessons to express.
Held my attention. Wonderful writing
I loved the characters and the growth of each of them as the novel progressed.
Sweet Anne grows up adopted by spinster brother/sister family.
This opened the door to the Anne of Green Gables series. I discovered it as a child after reading the Emily of New Moon series by the same author. Anne is an inspiration. She is full of mischief, imaginative, and has such a big heart. She’s always getting into scrapes, a foster child brought to the Cuthberts to help with chores on their farm. They …
The Anne series is one of my all time favorite series. She is like a good friend you never want to part with!
