“This novel is a winner.”–Publishers WeeklySome endings are really beginnings . . . On a hot day in 1737 in Rotterdam, Anna König reluctantly sets foot on the Charming Nancy, a merchant ship that will carry her and her fellow Amish believers across the Atlantic to start a new life. As the only one in her community who can speak English, she feels compelled to go. But Anna is determined to … feels compelled to go. But Anna is determined to complete this journey and return home–assuming she survives. She’s heard horrific tales of ocean crossings and worse ones of what lay ahead in the New World. But fearfulness is something Anna has never known.
Ship’s carpenter Bairn resents the somber people–dubbed Peculiars by the deckhands–who fill the lower deck of the Charming Nancy. All Bairn wants to do is to put his lonely past behind him, but that irksome and lovely lass Anna and her people keep intruding on him.
Delays, storms, illness, and diminishing provisions test the mettle and patience of everyone on board. When Anna is caught in a life-threatening situation, Bairn makes a discovery that shakes his entire foundation. But has the revelation come too late?
Bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher invites you back to the beginning of Amish life in America with this fascinating glimpse into the first ocean crossing–and the lives of two intrepid people who braved it.

A wonderful historical fiction. It is a story of Amish and Mennonites coming to America from Germany on the Charming Nancy. It is a story of Anna who is the only one who speaks English and she is there interpreter. She meets Bairn the ships carpenter. She begins to have feelings for him, and him for her but she knows this is wrong and can not happen. It is the struggle her people have on the ship with hardships from weather and conditions of the trip. It is a beautiful story of faith and there love for God. Can not wait to read the second book in the series.
I enjoy most Amish tales.
I found it a fascinating view of the Amish who came to America and the challenges they had along the way – not to mention a great love story with a few twists!
Enjoyed immensely!!!
This is mostly about how it was dealing with how the Amish came to America. It really tells the story of what happens on a ocean crossing. To extent that it gives what it like when Amish and other were traveling to the New World for their freedom.
You do not go into it expecting what is to happen. It seem more historical then Amish. Though is mostly about Amish and how they come to America. Susanne tell a story about Anna and though she is with while crossing the ocean. She seem interested in the carpenter on the Charming Nancy? Who could that be?

Anything by Suzanne Woods Fisher will touch your heart, emotions and her characters will be people that you can relate to. Although, most of her characters are Amish or Quaker, they face the same upheavals and good times that anyone does. You could take her characters and put them in any setting and they would still touch your heart and keep you turning pages. I’ve been a fan of Suzanne’s for several years and she only improves.
I bought this book and no one asked me to leave a review. All opinions expressed are my own and not influenced by anyone. I recommend anything by this author.
As I am someone who enjoys reading Amish and Ana Baptist historical fiction, this story series is a fabulous one. Suzanne’s writing style creates word pictures so you can experience the actual events taking place in the narrative. The characters struggles, joys, and faith questions, and dreams are as realistic as my own. I can relate to how they want to live a life that is simple, kind, God loving, and yet, full of challenges; some of those not of their own making. If you want to read ad adventure grounded in history, please take time to read this from Suzanne. Your time will not be wasted.
