From Barbara Kingsolver, the acclaimed author of Flight Behavior, The Lacuna, The Bean Trees, and other modern classics, Animal Dreams is a passionate and complex novel about love, forgiveness, and one woman’s struggle to find her place in the world.
At the end of her rope, Codi Noline returns to her Arizona home to face her ailing father, with whom she has a difficult, distant relationship. … she has a difficult, distant relationship. There she meets handsome Apache trainman Loyd Peregrina, who tells her, “If you want sweet dreams, you’ve got to live a sweet life.”
Filled with lyrical writing, Native American legends, a tender love story, and Codi’s quest for identity, Animal Dreams is literary fiction at it’s very best.
This edition includes a P.S. section with additional insights from Barbara Kingsolver, background material, suggestions for further reading, and more.

Masterful. Although it took me a little while to really “get into” this story, once that happened I was fully hooked. I hated to see the book end — I will miss the friends I made there. Beautifully rendered and emotionally satisfying.
I read this book several years ago, but the impact of Kingsolver’s writing has stayed with me. The story takes place in Arizona and is one of forgiveness. What struck me most was the easy-going style and the realism of the narrative.
I was impressed enough by it to use it in my high school English classes. it really resonates in today’s world of militarized borders and fear and intolerance if others. i hope my former students remember it and carry its insights with them as adults.
Animal Dreams: A Novel by Barbara Kingsolver, reaffirms my high regard for this acclaimed author. The contemporary story takes place in America’s Southwest.

I love the way Barbara Kingsolver writes! The Apache Native American stories and traditions were very interesting! I love the descriptions of natural Arizona.
Kingsolver has never disappointed. One book she wrote, Poisonwood Bible, is phenomenal, in my list of most beautiful books ever.
Kingsolver is always a good read
I’ll read everything Barbara Kingsolver ever writes. I think she’s amazing.
Of all the thousands of books I’ve read, this is my absolute favorite! Barbara Kingsolver’s books change over time. This book is nothing like Poisonwood Bible but more similar to The Bean Trees. I also live in Arizona where the book takes place. I highly recommend all of Kingsolver’s books but most especially Animal dreams.
Her books never disappoint.
I have enjoyed other books by this author, so I decided to read Animal Dreams when I found it on sale. Barbara Kingsolver is masterful at telling a character driven story. This is the story of a young woman returning home to a small town when her father is struggling with dementia. As she settles in, she has to make peace with her past, accept …
Codi Nolina has returned to her hometown in AZ to look after her ailing father. Aimless and believing herself to be unlovable, she slowly eases into the life of Grace, a town that is apparently dying from the residue of mining that once took place there. This author writes with descriptions that place you right not the setting. I’m a fan of her books.
Kingsolver is a marvelous writer and I have loved everything I have read of hers so far. I read Animal Dreams quite a while ago and don’t remember the details. I only remember loving it and being sad when it ended.
I’ve read this book at least 4 times. Its characters are unique and interesting. The story is unusual and moving. Kingsolver’s language is beautiful.
Love Kingsolver, and this book is one of her best.
I gave it. 3 based on my expectations from this author. A little disappointed and too much “preaching” and agenda driven.
Barbara is a favorite. Very talented writer.
My favorite author never fails!
good writing
