I enjoyed this book a lot. It started off a little rocky for me — I wasn’t sure I liked the representation of the angels. They seemed so cold, almost like vampires that didn’t drink blood and had wings. However, the more you read, the more her characterizations make sense. There exists a clear internal logic for why her older immortals are so cold, and the male love interest becomes more likeable/capable of being loved as time passes in the story.
She won me over. So far, I’ve bought seven books in this series. I love the story that occurs beyond the romantic element. At the same time, each of her couples so far have developed a unique, idiosyncratic relationship that, once again, makes sense for them.
I highly recommend her work. On top of all the quality plot work, great characterization, and ingenuity for keeping it fresh, she’s a darn good writer, weaving mythology from around the world with straight up, pure fantasy. It’s fun, entertaining, and addictive!
I bought a copy for my library to read again. Love the series.
