“When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I managed to survive at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood.” So begins the luminous memoir of Frank McCourt, born in Depression-era Brooklyn to recent Irish … Irish immigrants and raised in the slums of Limerick, Ireland. Frank’s mother, Angela, has no money to feed the children since Frank’s father, Malachy, rarely works, and when he does he drinks his wages. Yet Malachy — exasperating, irresponsible and beguiling– does nurture in Frank an appetite for the one thing he can provide: a story. Frank lives for his father’s tales of Cuchulain, who saved Ireland, and of the Angel on the Seventh Step, who brings his mother babies. Perhaps it is story that accounts for Frank’s survival. Wearing rags for diapers, begging a pig’s head for Christmas dinner and gathering coal from the roadside to light a fire, Frank endures poverty, near-starvation and the casual cruelty of relatives and neighbors–yet lives to tell his tale with eloquence, exuberance and remarkable forgiveness. Angela’s Ashes, imbued on every page with Frank McCourt’s astounding humor and compassion, is a glorious book that bears all the marks of a classic.

I didn’t care for this book. (Which is rare. I LOVE books.). I think the writing style was too crass for me, which is something I am not into. Yet, I know other reviewers absolutely loved it; So I think this read is a matter of personal taste. Not My taste, however.
Classic
The poor still live in places that have little or no running water.A widow can live on $10.00 month . The reason that Ireland is divided to the north is the pensions received are on English standards. This book protrays what came before the common market. It is harsh but the Celts survive.
One of the best books EVER written about the Emerald Isle and its resilient people!
An unforgettable book.
Wow… what a life Frank was born into. I recommend this book, the life that Frank went onto live given where he started is amazing. I am always inspired by people like him.
I couldn’t put this one down
Heart wrenching account of the ordinary life of an ordinary kid in Ireland. Captivating.
It has been years since I read it ,I was inspired to read all of his books as a result of reading this book
Every emotion imaginable will surface while reading this book.
I don’t care to read books with foul language but I guess that is the only way some people think they can make a story good.
a well written book couldn’t put down but very depressing
Beautifully written, it made me laugh and broke my heart.
Sadly depressing, reality of life for a young boy growing up in Ireland during one of the hardest periods of history. Very well written and a valuable read .
I lived it. No need to read it.
Great story, real people
Good grief, how much can a family suffer?
A wonderful writer and it goes to show how a child can come through adversity and turn out to be a good man. The Irish, yikes, really heart breaking tough times. So glad we don’t live then.
One of the best memoirs ever written!
An absolutely charming book in every respect. You’ll experience every single emotion when you read it.
