Great series!
I received an advance copy of this book, and I voluntarily wrote an honest review.
Angel Peak is the latest book written by Shirleen Davies. This story takes place November, 1869 in Splendor, Montana Territory.
Caleb Covington is a deputy. He is friends with May Bacon, who came to Splendor from New Jersey as a mail order bride. Since he is attracted to May, he asks her permission to court her. May is also very attracted to Caleb, so she agrees.
As soon as May agrees, Caleb learns he has a two and a half year old son named Isaac. As a result, Caleb is unsure if he can court May at the same time as he takes care of Isaac. Therefore, he decides to ignore her.
Caleb already has a lot of other obstacles to overcome before he can fully commit to May. When he was a Ranger in Austin, Texas his fiancé was murdered accidentally from “a bullet meant for him.” He cannot get over the guilt of her accident nor can he move on from his love for her. He also feels guilty that he left Isaac’s mother without telling her how to find him if she ever needed him.
After Caleb finally explains his background to May, she becomes unsure of his ability to ever fall in love with her. She is also uncertain if there can ever be a place in his life, and his heart, now that he has Isaac.
There is, also, a secondary story about Clare Billings, who comes to Splendor looking for Doctor Charles Worthington. He is an old friend from home whom she had loved before her marriage. Clare’s first marriage was an arranged one which was not based on love. Since she is now a widow, she wants to reunite with her old love.
Charles happens to be out of town for a while, so Clare has to wait until he returns. Unfortunately, someone burns down the church, with Clare in it. This secondary storyline is so intriguing that I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the main plot.
Meanwhile, to May’s further distress, her father, his nasty new wife and her son come to town to visit her. They upset May with their pushiness and attitude toward Splendor and its citizens.
There are many twists and turns in this book along with lots of adventure and intrigues. Furthermore, Caleb and Claire’s “off again, on again” relationship is rife with misunderstandings and miscommunications.
In spite of all of the action in this book, Ms. Davies skillfully manages the different events so that they all wrap around each event in a way that makes it easy for the reader to understand and enjoy this book.
This tale of Caleb and May is part of the Redemption Mountain series. From the first page, it draws the reader into the old west as the story unfolds. This author doesn’t disappoint in this new offering . Recommend this series for those that enjoy good westerns and romance.
Deputy Caleb Covington thought he had finally put his past behind him, gotten past losing the love of life to outlaws and wanting revenge against them, when he decided to court mail order bride May Bacon. But then a woman shows up with a son he never knew about and he starts to think he may never be good enough for May. May doesn’t understand how her friend Caleb could suddenly turn so cold against her. When Caleb finally tells her about his past and his lost love, she doesn’t know if she can be with the man she loves if he never loves her back. Add in a visiting father with his self-centered new wife and selfish stepson, a suspicious fire at the church with a wealthy woman from back east trapped inside, and an outlaw who is back for revenge of his own and you have a historical western with plenty humor, romance, and suspense.
This is a great author! Every book that I have read by her has been great and this one is no disappointment! She grabs your attention right away and you don’t want to put the book down because you want to know what is going to happen next and if you are going to get some answers to some of the suspense in the story! This story is about Caleb, who lost his fiancé when she was shot and died in his arms. He went from being a Texas Ranger to a bounty hunter, to a Deputy in Splendor, Montana. He feels like he is damaged goods and doesn’t know if he will ever love again. While at a local dance a woman he doesn’t know comes in asking for him and she has a young child with her that is his son! He never knew that Isaac existed before this woman dropping him at his feet!
May came to Splendor as a mail order bride. She is very attracted to Caleb , but she isn’t sure if he will ever get over his demons from the past with the loss of Regina and the guilt over not knowing that Isaac had been the result of his relationship with his deceased fiancé’s best friend!
This book as great twists, is a clean read, with a lot going on in it! A great read! This author does not disappoint her readers!
Caleb swore that he’d kill the men who killed his fiance. She was the innocent victim, shot in the crossfire. Caleb became a bounty hunter and went after the three men. He managed to kill two of them before he had to turn back because he ran out of money. He became a deputy in Splendor but vowed he’d get the last killer.
May Bacon came to Splendor as a mail order bride, after her father tried to marry her off to someone she found distasteful. She has been interested in Caleb. One night, Caleb finally asked May for permission to court her. May agrees. But her dreams are dashed when a woman shows up with a boy who is supposed to be Caleb’s son. Caleb’s attentions are now focused on his son and his courting of May is pushed to the side.
When danger comes to Splendor, will it bring them closer together or will it be the end of their future?
I loved this book. I have enjoyed all of Shirleen Davies’ books and Angel Peak did not disappoint.
This series continues to get better and better. I love the townspeople of Splendor more with every book. Caleb and May’s story is an exciting read packed with a great plot, interesting characters and romance.
ONE EXCITING ADVENTURE!!!
Wow! Talk about how the West was really won. This is one action packed, fast paced, hard hitting, adrenaline pumping, nerve racking, nailbiting, heart pounding, pulse racing, page turning thriller that’s as riveting as it is captivating. With increasing drama, fear, heartache, loss, grief, danger and suspense along with rising tension as the plot thickens. A strong realistic and believable storyline that keeps you on a razors edge and your attention firmly on the tale as it unfolds. All the twists and turns, ins and outs, ups and downs, along with a few unexpected surprises that make for remarkable experience. The characters and scenes are written with such realism it really pulls this bad boy together beautifully. With such graphically detailed descriptions it’s easy to picture each scenario as they play off one another in perfect balance. Shirleen did an amazing job bringing this read to life. Fantastic job Shirleen, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.
Outstandingly awesome western romance in the Redemption Mountain series. Ms. Davies continues to give readers the wonderful well developed characters with an exciting story. If you enjoy western you’ll love this book and series. May came to town as a mail order bride. Caleb is a hard working deputy with a less than stellar last but sets his eye on May. This story has suspense, romance, good guys and bad guys. I received a complementary copy of this book and chose to write a review. I very much look forward to reading future books by Ms. Davies.
I loved this book! This book was not predictable; just when I thought I knew what was going to happen, the direction would change. Given that, I had a hard time putting this book down! I recommend this book for anyone that loves westerns and a good storyline!
I received an advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for my review; my review was in no way influenced by receiving this book.
this is a revitting page turner of a story. could not put it down. if you have read any of the other books you have to read this one. she works in the kitchen and he is a deputy. Caleb is finely trying to put his past in the past he asked May to court and then a lady with a little boy ruses in calling his name, tells him he is the father and leaves. will he adjust and be a father to the little boy and where does that leave May? will May still want him now. someone is trying to hurt the new Lady in town. it was nice to see the people from other stories in this one, loved it. this is a very well written story, full of suspense and romance and misunderstandings . I was given a copy of the book but this is an honest reveiw. looking forward to the next book. if you like suspense ,cowboys, horses, little boys and Christmas, you have to read the book.
