A chance meeting changed everything.
Damian Wycliff, the illegitimate son of the Marquis of Blackbeck—and notorious rogue—loathes most people. With a heart as dark as his … most people. With a heart as dark as his Mediterranean looks, his cynical view of the world is challenged when a woman comes to his aid in a dark alley. In his world, kindness is a rare quality. Was that why he made the rash oath, a sworn promise to play the knight errant should she ever need assistance?
The lady calls in the debt.
Having spent three years wondering what happened to his mysterious saviour, Damian is horrified to discover the angel who saved his life is none other than the scandalous Scarlet Widow—a lady he should despise along with the other fake people who hide behind masks. So why can he not shake the memory of the sweet woman whose benevolence touched his heart? Why is he desperate to discover if she still exists beneath the daring disguise?
A promise never forgotten.
Someone wants Scarlett Steele dead. After surviving the numerous attempts made on her life, she no longer knows who to trust. But one man made a vow—a solemn promise to come to her aid. So when she seeks the help of the devilishly handsome Damian Wycliff, it soon becomes apparent that she isn’t the only one hiding behind a façade.
Does Wycliff possess the means to save her if the villain strikes again?
Will lowering their guards give them both a chance of finding true love?

Ms Clee has done it again with her first installment of Scandalous Sons Series. It is a beautiful love story, the characters are believable, strong, and courageous. Scarlett is an amazing woman whose endured a lot from her husband and still remains hopeful of finding her true love. I have started reading book two and it promises to be just as good as book one.
I completely loved this book by Adele Clee! A wonderful historical romance that I couldn’t put down till I finished. I love that Damian & Scarlet are not perfect but they work their way into your heart from the beginning. This series is going to be one of her best if the rest of them are like this first one.
I received this book as an ARC and I’m volunteering my honest review. You will be glad you read this book, I definitely recommend it.
This was a fun read. I loved how Scarlett did as she pleased in order to live a life she truly had not lived. Damian was so driven by his pain. The two of them together were fun and steamy. I enjoyed their journey for a second chance at an HEA, and I highly recommend this book. I look forward to the next in this new series.
I received a copy of this story as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.
WOW! What a great start to a series! This was such a great book to read! I was hook from the first chapter and couldn’t put it down (as always with this author). She does such a great job mixing romance and mystery together. There was anger, revenge, intrigue and unexpected twists all the way through the book. The characters were well developed and the story line was strong. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Both Damian and Scarlett are hiding behind masks that they have cultivated in order to protect them from the savage ton. But they may just find the salvation they are yearning for in each other if they are willing to let their masks go… Another amazingly raw and emotional read from Adele Clee! Definite must-read!!
I really enjoyed this book. There was mystery, heat and a nice love story. Also I can not resist a bad boy who has a soft spot for a certain special lady and Damian is one of the best bad boys I have read in awhile. Damian and Scarlett just belong together. I was hooked on this book from chapter 1. Adele Clee writing style helped me to enjoy this story.
This story is absolutely brilliant and oh, what an amazing start to the Scandalous Sons series! You can’t help but feel deeply about the two main characters, Scarlett and Damian. Both have gone through so much and will go through much more yet before finding their HEA.
Damian Wycliff, the bastard son of the Marquis of Blackbeck, is filled with anger and vengeance and doesn’t trust anyone. One night he is hurt and finds himself in a dark alley where he is saved by a woman he only knows as Scarlett. He vows to always be there for her if she ever needs anything. After he’s recovered, he goes in search for her but she has completely disappeared.
Three years later, Scarlett Steele aka the Scarlet Widow, shows up at Damian’s door to ask for his help in finding out who is trying to kill her. Their attraction to each other is still very strong but she has gone through so much in those last 3 years, she vows never to let a man rule or hurt her ever again.
Just when you think you know the answer as to who is out to end her life, the author throws you for a loop! The intrigue and the suspense in the story alone will keep you fully interested. As for the passion between Damian and Scarlett….whoa! lol This is a book I strongly recommend.
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Perfect!! Exactly what a romantic suspense story set in London, 1823 should be!! One of my very favorite authors, Adele Clee brilliantly creates a story with all of the facets of intrigue, suspense, fear and two characters who wrap around your heart. Both need love and redemption and they just might find it if given the chance.
She saved him from dying three years ago when he had been beaten by men with no idea who had sent them. The angel’s name was Scarlett and all he knew was that she was an actress but had not been always been as he heard good breeding in her voice. When he was well and could go, he left her with a solemn promise that if she ever needed him he swore on an oath to offer assistance.
That time came three years later when she seeked him out and called his in his debt to her. But now she is know as the Scarlett Widow after marrying an old man and being a challenge to every man alive. He had not much use for that although he was the bastard son of a Marquess who reveled in being a rogue and looking only for pleasure.
Wow, these two are explosive and filled with so much hurt and pain that my only hope was they could heal each other. The road to the last page is a tense one at times but also there is some lightness. I cannot wait to read more in this new series by this fabulous storyteller who always wraps her stories around my heart!
Fire Strengthens Steele
A prayer and a vow brought two damaged souls together, then they parted ways. If they meet again, will there be a better answer to both of their prayers?
Adele Clee is one of my top five favorite authors. I love her character driven stories and tightly woven plots. And The Widow Wore Scarlett is an excellent example of all the elements that coalesce together for an engrossing read. I both liked and pitied Scarlett and Damian. They both struggled with jaded and damaged souls from their sufferings, which they somehow survived. Adele Clee did a great job of balancing dialogue and descriptions with just the right amount of inner musings.
All in all, I loved this book. I hope you will too.
Content alert: This novel contains vulgarities and some very descriptive sexual intimacies. In addition to on screen violence, there are also some descriptions of domestic violence and abuse.
Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book from the author. I am voluntarily submitting my honest review.
(Note: I also posted my review on Amazon and on Goodreads. Since this book rates 5 stars, I also posted the cover on my Pinterest page (https://www.pinterest.com/marthajane65/rural-reader-my-favorite-5-star-reads/).
Wow, Adele has a great start to a new series, “The Scandalous Son’s”
If all of them are as good as the first one I can’t wait. Damian Wycliff is the bastard son of The Marquis of Blackbeck and his mother, Maria was a actress. He lives life to upset and disappoint his father who left his mother to raise him on her own. He is a rogue for sure, and has fought and killed man in duels. He avoids society which is good cause the mother’s of the ton, don’t want him around their daughters.
He is set upon by four men and beaten almost to death and left in an alley to die.
As he is bleeding and broken he calls out to his dead mother for help, and when opening his eyes
their is a women staring at him. She helps him and treats his wounds. Sewing up his knife cut as best she can. She takes care of him for three days. He leaves her with his card if she should ever need anything and
gives her the cross that belonged to his mother. When he looks for her she is gone and no one seems to know where.
Three years later the Scarlett Widow is the talk of town, there is a bet at White’s the gentleman’s club on who will be the first to bed her. She shows up at a low house of pleasure to remind Damian of his promise
that if she needed help to contact him.
Someone is trying to kill her, there has been four attacks so far. He is shocked to see her and doesn’t know about the bet. He can’t believe how badly her late husband hurt her. As there was always a strong attractions between them he agrees to help her. They will let society believe they are lovers.
It doesn’t take long before they are lovers, and more.
This is a fast moving story, with lot’s of steamy sex scenes. The side character’s help make the story
from Scarlett’s stepson and daughter, to Lady Rathbone and her grandson Lord Rathbone. All have something to gain from her. Mr Cavanagh and Mr Trent are Damian’s best friends.
Lots of mystery, Intrigue and of course the love story.
I received an ARC from the author and am giving my honest review.
Be sure to get your copy. Bet you read it in one setting too. I just couldn’t put it down… WOW
And the Widow Wore Scarlet
Scandalous Sons book 1
by Adele Clee
WOW! Just Wow! This was such an emotional rollercoaster of a story! A gritty second chance at love full of passion, sorrow, betrayals, villains bent on murder, mystery and intrigue, hope, and a love so deep that never dies.
I’m a HUGE fan of Adele Clee her books are keepers, they never disappoint!
As the illegitimate son of the Marquis of Blackbeck Damian Wycliff has been on a mission of shocking the ton by any scandalous means. Hoping he’ll bring shame to the father that shunned his mother.
So when a young woman comes to his aid and saves him from bleeding to death in an alley, his damaged an broken heart makes a connection with her. He gives her his most sacred possession and tells her that if ever she needs anything from him not to hesitate to ask for his help. Three years later the Scarlet Widow comes to collect on that long ago promise.
Scarlet Steele has spent the last three horrific years of her life in terror, she married a vile abusive man for protection. Once again she fears for her life, someone is trying to kill her and the only man to save her is Damian Wycliff, the man she’s kept close to her heart, the man she should of seekEd out in the first place.
Damian and Scarlet have a rocky beginning but the connection they have is strong, Damian is shocked to see the extent of her pain inflicted by her abusive husband. He steps up to the plate and becomes the man she knows is hiding deep within, the man she fell in love with while tending to his wounds. I wasn’t expecting the identity or the motive of the villain, Adele Clee really kept me guessing.
I enjoyed the plot tremendously, definitely a page turner, the secondary characters were interesting and can’t wait to read all about their story. I wonder who is putting the fresh flowers on the grave? And why? I’m so anticipating the next amazing story in this PHENOMENAL new series!
I received a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.
Adele Clee is quite gifted in setting a brooding type of atmosphere in her stories. From the first chapter, wherein Scarlett saves Wycliff’s life in a dark and filthy alleyway, there is a feeling of darkness and despair. The descriptions of stolen caresses paint a picture of yearning for tenderness and affection. And then there is the strong sensual and sexual attraction between Wycliff and Scarlett.
But the story is not told only through mood; there is also concise and believable dialogue. All-around I found this an engrossing read. I’m looking forward to the next books of this new series.
I read an advance copy and voluntarily post this review.
I was completely hooked after reading the first pages of this great story, full of romance, mystery & such wonderful, emotionally scarred characters.
Damian Wycliff is the bastard son of the Marquis of Blackbeck – he is handsome, wealthy, a scandalous rake & most of all hates society & his absent father. Damian meets his angel, Scarlet Steele, in an alley after he had been stabbed. They managed to get to her room, where she stitches his wound, fights his fever & finally saves him. They part ways & he promises to be there for her if she ever needs anything.
He began sending firewood & food every week to help her out & then she just vanished – he looked for & nothing came to light; she was gone. Damian spent the next three years away from home & when he returned & began attending a few Ton events; he was shocked to find his angel was the scandalous Scarlet Widow.
Someone wants Scarlet dead & as a last resort, she wants Damian to fulfill his solemn promise of helping her, if the need arose. Their adventures together kept you so engaged – will Damian discover who was attempting to murder Scarlet, can they over come theirs scars (mental & physical), is it possible to knock the walls around theirs hearts to let love in?
I was gifted this ARC & I have volunteered to give my honest opinion – Adele Clee has written a fantastic book with characters that pull at your heart strings!
Enjoyed the story, it was well written and entertaining. Scarlett saves Damon’s life and nurses him back to health and he vows to owe her a debt of honor. Three years later, she calls in his debt when someone tries to kill her. Damon never forgot her and has fantasized about her ever since and when she comes asking for help, the reality is so much better than he could have hoped for. There is a HEA but a lot happens first. I would highly recommend this book and it is appropriate for most age groups.
Oh how I loved this story of Scarlet and Damien! Scarlet saves Damien from a knife wound and he promises to help her if she needs it. Years later as the Scarlet Widow, she calls to collect! Very convoluted and interesting yarn. Wonderful characters, great communication and interaction. I thoroughly enjoyed this and couldn’t put it down!
An engrossing story involving murder, lies, deception and two wounded, lonely
souls finding their HEA. Highly recommended. ARC furnished free for honest
review.
Loved this book!
I loved everything about this book from the rather dramatic names of the main characters (Damian and Scarlet) and their dynamic personalities and methods of doing things, as well as their strange familial relationships. Besides this I need to also mention the engrossing plot and mystery. There are also some not nice people whom I just loved to hate!
This is a very exciting story with much romancing going on and I mustn’t forget to mention the heat level. Oh yes, there are some pretty hot moments too!
I couldn’t put this book down – really and truly! Once I began, I just had to finish it and so I happily recommend it to you.
I read an Advance Reader Copy of the ebook and this is my voluntary and unbiased review.
