Ancient Enforcer is the 3rd book in the Ancient Rising series by Katie Reus. This is about thousand year old dragon-shifter, Mikael and human Avery.
This is a sizzling paranormal romance that brings the feels, chemistry, heat, danger, adventure and romance. Mikael and Avery are an amazing couple and it’s great to see how they work together towards their HEA. Plus it was good seeing past characters, King and Aurora make appearances in this book as well as it’s building towards their own forthcoming book Ancient Vendetta which is due out by end of 2021.
Great story, awesome characters, and entertaining paranormal romance read.
My Rating: 4.5 stars *******
Mikael and Avery’s story, a kind of friends to lovers shifter romance. Mikael awakes from hibernation and finds Avery to learn about the new world, realizing Avery is his mate. She is one feisty strong woman sending Mikael into the friend zone, their own pasts coming between them. If you haven’t read the previous ones, the author does a good recap and you can understand what is going on, although I recommend reading them as they are very good. The characters are great, the world-building was very interesting, and definitely a dragon shifter series you want to read.
Ancient Enforcer by Katie Reus is former dragon general Mikael’s story after reawakening from hundreds of years asleep. Surprise to realize that he is drawn to a human in this new world is an understatement but one he handles well. Avery, a house flipper, is also handling this new world by helping to rebuild New Orleans. She is tough yet vulnerable too making her the total package for a great heroine.
Exciting story with a slower romance than sometimes happens in shifter stories it works so well for these two. They dance around their attraction, believing that the friend zone is best. However, their feelings are not to be denied, neither is Mikael’s dragon.
All is not well in New Orleans as the danger surrounding Avery comes nearer and nearer. This story has some twists that I was not expecting but makes for a thrilling read. Like many who follow this series, I was hoping King’s story. He does get a pet but not a love which is always teased but held at a distance. If I cannot have King getting his story yet, I will gladly take the wonderful ancient Mikael getting his. Fans will not be disappointed in this story since it is a surprising and compelling read with many glimpses of King to along the way.
4.5 Stars
An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ancient Enforcer is the third book in the Ancients Rising series. It was another amazing read with wonderful characters.Mikael and Avery were a wonderful couple with great chemistry. I have been anxiously awaiting their story and it was definitely worth the wait. I can’t wait to read the next book in this amazing series
4.5 stars–ANCIENT ENFORCER is the third instalment in Katie Reus’s contemporary, adult ANCIENTS RISING paranormal/fantasy romance series. This is ancient dragon shifter and former general/enforcer Mikael, and human / house flipper Avery Cortez’ story line. ANCIENT ENFORCER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
SOME BACKGROUND: Months earlier, several dragons rose from their sleep, and in the aftermath destroyed much of the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, in an apocalyptic showdown known as The Fall, but in doing so revealed the existence of the supernatural world to humankind. Ancients Rising focuses on the recovery of the city, and the group of supernaturals and dragons who have come to call New Orleans their home.
Told from several third person perspectives including Mikael and Avery, ANCIENT ENFORCER follows the building romance and relationship between ancient dragon shifter and former general Mikael, and human / house flipper Avery Cortez. Mikael and his younger brothers had been asleep for hundreds of years but with their rising after The Fall, Avery Cortez is assigned by the Alpha of New Orleans, wolf shifter King, as housemother to Mikael, and his brothers Casimir and Ivyn, As the foreperson on the rebuilding of a part of the town, Avery is up close and personal with a number of the supernatural inhabitants and finds herself pulled towards the aura of her latest house mate but New Orleans continues to struggle in its’ recovery, and with it, a fight for power re-emerges as it sets its’ sights on our leading hero. What ensues is the slow building romance and relationship between Avery and Mikael, and the potential fall-out as Mikael finds himself caught between head and heart; and Avery places herself in the direct line of fire to rescue the man with whom she is falling in love.
Mikael knows that Avery is his mate but bides his time in his approach to the woman who has captured his heart. Our heroine is oblivious to Mikael’s attempts at a slow seduction, and in this, she is the last to realize that Mikael is the man offering her a happily ever after. With another ancient forming his own army of newly born vampires, Mikael and Avery soon realize they are connected together at an even deeper alliance.
The relationship between Avery and Mikael is one of immediate attraction but Avery wants nothing to do with a long-term relationship. Mikael’s dragon knows that Avery is their mate but convincing Avery is a slow process in that life is about to spiral out of control. The $ex scenes are passionate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of colorful and supernatural secondary and supporting characters including New Orlean’s alpha wolf King, and the phoenix Aurora; lion shifter Axel, tiger twins Harlow and Brielle, Lola,; half demon Cynara; vampires Justus, Ingrid and Claudine;Rhys, Dallas; dragon healer Greer; Mikael’s brothers Cas and Ivyn; Avery’s human brothers Anthony and Riel, and their father Shep, his wife Lindsay, powerful vampire Magnus; and dragonlings Hunter and Willow. King and Aurora’s story line is next.
ANCIENT ENFORCER is a story of family, friendships, betrayal and revenge; a story of power and control; tragedy and triumph. The premise is moving and edgy; the romance is encouraging yet intense; the characters are numerous, energetic and spirited. ANCIENT ENFORCER is a wonderful and startling addition to Reus’ ANCIENTS RISING paranormal series.
This is such an amazing book in what has become one of my favorite PNR series! I am totally enamored with these dragons and their stories! And Mikael is incredible! He is so strong and powerful, yet so sweet with Avery. He is totally obsessed with her but in a good way, and of course he is yummy. And I love how he is with her, she really throws him off balance. She is such an awesome, sweet and strong person. I love how she takes care of everyone. I really enjoyed watching Mikael and Avery fall in love and every moment of their story even the super tense ones. And I love that there is a new dragonling. I can’t wait to see what’s next in this series!
Mikael is a dragon -shifter and is in love with Avery, just as she is with him. The thing of it is, neither of them is willing to say it or do much about it until it’s nearly too late.
Avery is pretty sour on men and relationships, thanks to her father. He played around on her mother while her mother was sick. Such a low-life. But who he messed around with makes it even worse. I wanted to choke the bastard myself.
Mikael and his brothers have been housemates at Avery’s, working on her constructions crews, and quickly becoming like brothers to her. Only he doesn’t want to be just another brother. He wants a whole lot more. I loved the way he had no finesse with his words. He said things that weren’t exactly nice in polite society. It made me laugh at times. He put the “I” in inappropriate.
All is well until vampires are being made and left to kill humans. They’re untrained and don’t really know how to be vampires. This raises the hackles of King (when are we going to get his and Aurora’s story?) and everybody is trying to figure out who is making these things. It’s serious, but doesn’t get super serious until Avery’s brothers are kidnapped.
This is an exciting book with plenty of ups and downs that keep the story moving. I liked the characters, the dragonlings, and the way that Mikael and Avery finally got it together. The sex was red hot, minus the anal play. So not my thing, but I know it doesn’t bother others.
I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
*I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily left a review.
I’ve been a long-time fan of Katie Reus’s romantic suspense books. When 2020 hit us like a ton of bricks, I found myself not wanting to read my normal genre of books for long stretches of time. So when someone suggested I try reading a genre I wouldn’t normally read, I thought it was a great idea and decided to take the plunge into this author’s paranormal romances. Before I knew it, I found myself completely submerged in all things Ancients Rising series. Ancient Enforcer can be read as a stand-alone title, but I will tell you that you are missing out on some really good stories if you don’t read books one and two.
NICUnurse’s Rating: Now, I must confess that I did love the Twilight series (both the books–which I read first–and the movies). And if someone had asked me before I decided to read this series what type of shifter books I’d prefer, I probably would have said wolf shifters. Bearing my love of Jacob Black in mind, I decided to get myself out of my book funk, I would have to read something completely new. How great was it that one of my favorite romantic suspense authors had an awesome line up of dragon shifter books ready to be devoured?! And Avery and Mikael’s story was just the pick me up I needed after January 2021 showed us that it wasn’t going to be much better than the previous nine months.
With the world in total chaos, Avery is desperately trying to help rebuild her beloved New Orleans. She’s proud to be able to play such a huge part in King’s restoration plans. After all, she’s only a human in a world full of supernatural beings that are no longer hiding who and what they are. Mikael is struggling to figure out this new world he’s woken up in. When Avery takes him and his two brothers under her wing, so to speak, he’s completely enamored with this human female. She’s strong, caring, and a bit stubborn. And his mate. So how can he convince her that the very fairy tales she scoffs at can come true?
With wonderful characters, adorable dragonlings, fast-paced action, steamy scenes, and suspense, this book kept me entertained and completely sucked into this magical world from the very first chapter. When you need a true escape from reality, you’re going to want to dive into this book (and the series, in my opinion).
I give Ancient Enforcer by Katie Reus 4 out of 5 stars!
Another action-packed, suspense-filled story in the Ancients Rising Series. I have enjoyed this series for many reasons.
One I love Dragons!!
Two… the author gives us so many different beings in each story and for the most part, they work together for a better life.
The females are not pushovers whether they be human or other.
And the evil badmen are always E.V.I.L.
Avery and Mikael’ story tugs right at the heart of family. So it makes the fight they are about to endure that much worse.
I can not wait to see who gets a story next in this thrilling series and I am hoping it’s the alpha, King!
I love dragonlings!!!
After awakening from a millennia sleep, former general Mikael finds himself in a new world living with a human female. Avery Cortez and her two younger brothers, Anthony and Riel, find themselves sheltering three dragon shifter brothers, Mikael, Casimir and Ivyn. It is Mikael that she finds so distracting and exciting as he begins to weave his way into her life and heart. Mikael finds himself attracted to this female woman. Although she is not at all what he expected, he finds himself having thoughts about her, being with her…protecting her. When they are threatened, will they be able to survive? I do not usually read “shifter” stories, but Ms. Reus, with her Ancients Rising series, has a way of drawing you into the story and characters making you forget that they are not entirely human. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Dragon Shifter Mikael and his brothers have been in hibernation for thousands of years. Now they have woken to a world they don’t recognize. With no where else to go, they are taken into the home of Avery, a house flipper who is busy helping to rebuild the city.. Though Avery has her reservations about these three new comers, something about Mikael intrigues her.
From the time they met, Mikael was drawn to Avery. He recognizes the attraction for what it is, but when bloodless bodies start piling up in the city, he is forced to turn his attention to the danger facing the city. Together, he and Avery need to face an enemy from Mikael’s past. Mikael must risk it all to save everything he cares about.
Not having read the first books in the series, I felt a little lost trying to keep up with all the different characters and catching up with background in the beginning of the story. Once I overcame that, I thought the build up was a bit drawn out and moved slowly. However, once the action started, it was non stop. The second half of the story moved quickly. We learn much more about Mikeal’s history and his character. While Avery was kind of grating in the first half of the story, she grew on me during the second half. In the end, I really enjoyed the story and am anxious to go back and read the stories I’ve missed in preparation for what is to come.
Avery was a house flipper before the fall and has valuable construction experience. She’s been working with King to help rebuild housing and make sure everybody has the shelter that they need as they rebuild New Orleans. When King asks her to take in three dragon shifters who are new to town, she is hesitant, but as she gets to know them she agrees and appreciates the help that they offer on her job sites. She notices the oldest of the brothers, Mikael, but thinks he’s probably more heartbreak than he’s worth.
Mikael lost everything thousands of years ago and went into hibernation. Now that he’s awake again the world has changed and he finds himself living and attracted to a human female. He can’t help the growing feeling of protectiveness he feels towards her however he also finds because she’s human she is far more vulnerable than he is used to. When a danger from her past emerges, they find they must work together to keep her family together while also exploring the attraction building between them and Mikael’s desire to claim her.
Mikael is protective of his family and those he holds dear. Despite coming out of hibernation he quickly learns how to maneuver in modern society, though admittedly the world is not quite as modern as had The Fall not happened.
Avery is sweet and strong. Working in a male-dominated field she learned long ago how to stand up for herself and how to get things done. As she welcomes the dragons into her house she helps to build a new sort of blended family among her own brothers and these dragon brothers.
As they get to know each other Mikael is sure Avery is his mate however he isn’t sure how to convince her of that fact as well as introduce her into the differences between a human male and a dragon male. As a result this book feels like a slow burn even though their relationship is building along the way. Because Avery is unfamiliar with shifter traditions there is a lot for her to learn.
I found myself quickly pulled into this post-apocalyptic New Orleans. Reconnecting with this group of shifters, witches, and humans was a great distraction from the present. This book came up in my reading list at the perfect time and was exactly what I needed for a little reading refresh. I love all the little connections in the background and particularly enjoyed watching King and Aurora continue to circle around each other. I cannot wait for their story, to see what is really building between them.

The world as we know it is gone. Now people are aware there are supernaturals living among them. In New Orleans King is the Alpha. He’s hard at work rebuilding the city. Avery is a human female helping with building housing. She’s a hard worker who wants to help. She’s well liked by all so King asks her to help an Ancient Dragon adjust to this new world. Mikael and his younger brothers are going to stay with Avery. The group bonds and becomes a family. Things heat up quickly when Mikael and his dragon find that Avery is his mate. Their attraction is powerful and filled with passion and caring. However, a deadly enemy is determined to destroy them all. Can they escape from his evil? I loved this book. Ancient Enforcer is filled with suspense and nonstop action plus the romance between Avery and Mikael is so intense. I feel for the powerful dragon! Avery is determined not fall in love. I couldn’t put this book down. I needed to know how their story would end. I liked all the characters. I fell in love with the young dragon, Hunter. He had King wound around his little finger. It was wonderful to catch up with the supernaturals of New Orleans. Katie Reus is a talented author. I enjoy her writing and can’t wait for more.
I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.

H-O-T, HOT, is the best way to describe the newest book in the Ancients Rising Series! Who knew a broody and intense Dragon Shifter could be the mate any woman would dream of having for her own. Mikael is different than many of the other shifters we have met so far, more serious, more powerful and more determined than anyone to make sure his fated mate is safe and HIS! Avery is sweet and a hard worker, she works with King to rebuild the city of New Orleans, one building at a time. From the moment Mikael, and his brothers, walk into her home nothing will ever be the same. The attraction between these two is immediate, as we would expect from mates, but Avery has been hurt by too many events in her past and has given up on fully trusting anyone. Mikael knows this but doesn’t try to convince her to commit to him, he just becomes a strong and steady presence in her life end by her side. He is thousands of years old, and after hibernation her is in a strange new world, and though he adjusts to it, he never loses his “old fashioned” ways of being the man Avery can depend on. This book has evils, battles, surprises and friendship throughout. I fell in love with Mikael and Avery’s brothers and hope they all get their own story! King is present throughout the story and is the string Alpha leader we have come to expect him to be, and I definitely look forward to his story coming soon! Overall, I cannot get enough of the Ancients Rising series from Katie Reus and I hope it continues for MANY more books!! Oh and…how can I get one of those dragonlings for myself?!
Cara – Alphas Do It Better Book Blog
This was my first time in this dragon shifter world and meeting Mikael and all of the supernatural beings in this book made this an exciting, fun read.
Mikael and his brothers awoke to a new world, which was very different than when he went to sleep thousands of years ago, but as he acclimated to this new time, he was happy to have a certain female in charge of that acclimation, as she may be his mate.
Avery doesn’t believe in love as she watched her parents marriage fail. When Mikael lands in her life she does her best to ignore his sexy dragon body and it should be easy since dragons and humans can’t mix, can they?
On top of the swirling feelings between them, Avery’s stepmother is on the hunt to kill her, a dark evil is swirling about the city she loves that may be out to hurt everyone she cares about.
I enjoyed the multiple POV’s while reading, it kept the action moving and guided the main characters on their path towards finding their happiness together. It lead many possibilities towards where the next books in the series could go.
This was my first time reading Katie Reus and even though this is book three in the series I had no trouble jumping in and beginning with Ancient Enforcer.
This is book 3 in the Ancient’s Rising series and it can absolutely be read as a standalone although I recommend all the other books in this series as well! Mikael is a former general who lost everything thousands of years ago. When he is awakened after hibernating, he comes into a totally different world that is complete chaos. He and his brothers are asked to live with Avery and her brothers. He knows he shouldn’t want Avery, she is soft, sweet, and human. But he can’t help how he feels and it grows every day. Avery was a house flipper before the world turned upside down. She knows what it means to feel heart break and to not be able to trust those closest to you. She agrees to take in Mikael and his brothers after meeting them because they seem lost in this world. And she can’t help but fall for Mikael a little more every day. But when a threat emerges threatening to tear her world apart, everything changes between them. And Mikael will risk everything to keep her safe and claim her.
I loved this one! I was curious about their story ever since we saw them in the previous book, and this in no way disappoints! Mikael is definitely the alpha, protective shifter who isn’t afraid to do what he needs to do for those he cares about. But he also has this sweet, soft side that I loved. Avery has been hurt before by one of the people that you should always be able to trust. And while she has a difficult time trusting people, it doesn’t stop her from still helping them when they need it. And I loved that about her! Their chemistry is explosive but more than that, they have a great friendship. And I think that is why I loved this one so much! The side characters as usual are great! And I wouldn’t mind seeing stories for both sets of brothers! Of course, now I can’t wait for the next story!

An ancient dragon warrior determined to protect what’s his…
Former general Mikael lost his clan, his family, everything, thousands of years ago. Now he’s awakened in a new world that’s trying to rebuild. He and his brothers are ordered to live with Avery, a human female, and her younger brothers. Avery is nothing he should want. She’s too soft, too sweet…too happy. But he can’t stop his growing obsession with her.
The human female who threatens his jaded heart…
House flipper Avery is no stranger to heartbreak, and knows that the ones you love most can stab you in the back the quickest. Will her past scars prevent her from seing what is really in front of her …
From the moment Avery and her boys were introduced in the previous book, I was curious about them.
Avery is not the average girl, even before the Fall, when the humans world was turned upside down, by the unveiling of the paranormal beings living alongside them, and when some crazy dragon shifters tried to destroy it, she chooses to help and sided with the Alpha of her city.
She is a mother’s hen for her boys, her younger brothers but also others who where put under her charge like three dragon brothers. If only she could view the elder Mikael as such, she tries to put him in the friend zone area but he still awakens dreams and needs she long ago refused to entertain for any man. Dragon not human.
Mikael awakened from a long sleep not so long ago to see the world he has always known changed in a very different one. Now he must walk this new one with own guilt but also a woman by his side who keeps him at arms length when he desires so much more from her.
Both are very protective persons, they put themselves before the others to defend those under their care. And while Avery is only human, it does not lessen her strength to do what is right. Her main problem is she never recovered from her mother’s heartbreak, why she has sworn off any possible romantic entanglement.
When Mikael still blames himself for his family’s massacre when it was only circumstances or malice that had him away.
Some flashbacks enlighten the growth of their romance, as while they play a game of hide and seek, the feelings they have for one another slowly expand until they can’t deny them even if they try to lie to themselves.
I loved the story added insights of King (the city’s alpha), and when I discovered his story is the next to come, I can’t wait to put my hands on it.
In all, it is a fun and entertaining read which explore the many sides of the paranormal beings. Definitely a series to read as many of protagonists will need their own tale.

Ancient Enforcer, Book 3 in Ancients Rising series by Katie Reus is another interesting and sexy read for me. I didn’t enjoy it as much as Ancient Enemy but it was still a wonderful read.
Mikael woke up in a new world which he find strange, he was not alone though as he has his younger brothers with him. Although Mikael still struggles with being in the modern (he gets his phrases wrong at times), he was still a quick study and he totally has the hots for the small human woman that took him and his brothers in. Avery is a very likeable heroine and she’s perfect for Mikael. It was fun to see not only the dynamics between Avery and Mikael but Avery and the group of human men and male shifters that she’s in charge of.
A satisfying read, so far this series is a winner and I cannot wait for the next book. Thanks NetGalley for the advance copy, the views above are of my own.
OMW I’m so enjoying the Ancients Rising series.
Mikael awoke in the modern world to find it ablaze – almost literally. He’s had a sharp learning curve to deal with modern living after an apocalypse! But with his brothers, he has found a new home in New Orleans. Placed with Avery and her brothers, he finds himself feeling decidedly non brotherly towards the tiny human!
The last thing Avery needs is more brothers, even of the shifter kind. But her new team of shifters is just that…well except Mikael. She may have friend-zoned him but that’s because she’s not sure her pitiful human heart could survive an encounter with the hunkalicious Dragon!
If you enjoyed a certain baby dragon in the previous books, well get ready for more dragonling cuteness. This one adopts King however. An Alpha Werewolf with a pet dragon – stranger things have happened!
Mikael is like this walking, talking suit of armour where Avery is concerned. Always watchful, always protecting – even when she does everything she can to prove she is capable of looking after herself. Mikael isn’t condescending, just overprotective. he’ll take orders from Avery quite happily in the work environment but when it comes to her safety – she’ll just have to deal with him and his very dominant dragon genes LOL.
Now to wait not so patiently for King to finally get his HEA with the adorable Aurora!
Another great read in this series I love these ancient dragons brought back into a modern world that they have so much difficulty with It will take a special kind of woman to help them survive in modern times
Avery is that woman for Mikael he is a dragon that was an enforcer with no gentle side to him at all but in Avery he finds something that he wants to protect When danger threatens her and her family Mikael will step up Has he finally found where he needs to be in life in this brave new world.
