Ancient Enforcer by Katie Reus
3rd book in the Ancient Rising series. Post apocalyptic paranormal romance. With dragon shifters. Can be read as a stand-alone romance but better as part of the series.
Mikael is a thousand year old dragon. Avery is human in charge of a construction crew helping to rebuild housing in New Orleans. Mikael is sure that Avery is his mate. Avery doesn’t want a commitment in the chaos of the new world. As they work to figure out what’s between them, old enemies cause havoc and bring danger to the tentative peace in New Orleans where King is alpha in charge.
Dragon shifters, wolf shifters, and witches against an ancient evil dark mage.
An exciting adventure where loyalty and deep friendships are key. Plus an adorable baby dragonling becomes a hero.
Great adventure. Satisfying romance. Can’t wait for stories for Mikael’s brothers.
I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I also purchased a copy to share.
“Ancient Enforcer” is the high energy, action packed third installment of the “Ancients Rising” series by Katie Reus. Readers finally get the story that has built for two books between, Avery, a human, and Mikael, an ancient dragon shifter. You do not need to read the other books in the series to enjoy this story but some characters do carry over for book to book. Reus had introduce Avery and Mikael in “Ancient Protector”, the first book in the series. I had been eagerly anticipating this story. The mystery surrounding these two characters kept me intrigued and Reus did not disappoint.
After The Fall, Avery found herself as the manager of a crew of construction workers, building and rebuilding homes for the displaced citizens of New Orleans. The work was familiar to her as it was something she had done before the fall. Having lived in New Orleans her whole life, she had always been aware of supernatural creatures.
Mikael and his brothers found themselves in New Orleans after The Fall. Since they had no family and no clan, they had no where better to be. After presenting themselves to the local Alpha, King, they were “assigned’ to live and work with Avery and her two brothers. Mikael senses immediately that Avery is his mate. Avery’s jaded past makes it difficult for her to form committed relationships and open herself up to love. When Avery’s past shows up on her doorstep the couple find themselves not only battling her demons, but his too.
I discovered this series just after the new year and quickly fell in love with the characters and the world that Reus has built Because the characters appear in the other books the reader gets to know them and their cute quirks. I eagerly anticipate each persons story and will read each installment.
I can’t recommend ‘Ancient Enforcer’ and the whole “Ancients Rising’ series enough.
I’m always happy to find a new PNR series featuring dragon shifters and am looking forward to going back and reading the previous books in the series. Avery was a strong, caring human female, trying to keep her younger brothers safe and navigate a post-Fall New Orleans after the world was devastated by rogue dragon attacks. Luckily for her, she’d already been working with supernaturals prior to the Fall, and had a strong relationship with the new Alpha wolf of New Orleans, who’d taken over and was trying to protect the remaining population. When he asks Avery to take in a couple of ancient dragon shifter brothers who’ve just woken from hibernation and need help integrating into the modern world, she doesn’t hesitate to open her house and heart to them. Mikael is the oldest brother, takes one look at Avery and his dragon self immediately roars “MINE”. At first, she friendzones him, but he slowly starts to figure out how to navigate dating, and eventually claiming, the woman of his heart. There’s plenty of action, plenty of dragon shifter antics, a bit of alpha chest thumping (although never taken to obnoxious extremes) and an adorable, intelligent dragonling.
This book is the third in a spinoff series to the author’s Darkness series. Although I read the first couple of books in the previous series quite awhile ago, I didn’t remember that many details. I found that I was able to follow the action in this book with very little difficulty so I feel like it would work very well as a standalone. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is book three in The Ancients Rising Series and it is Mikael and Avery’s story. Mikael is a dragon shifter and after going into hibernation he wakes up and realised that he is staying with Avery who he known is his mate but will be so anything about it. Avery lives with her brothers and they all work to together but when she was asked to have Mikael and his brother’s staying in her house she didn’t realise how much her life would change but would it be for the better. The characters and storyline pulled you in right from the first page and I couldn’t put this book down as it was so addictive. Katie Reus is an amazing author and writer and no body writes paranormal stories like Katie does and I definitely recommend you read this book, series and other books by her and you will definitely not be disappointed.
I Voluntarily Reviewed an Arc Copy of this book.
ANCIENT ENFORCER (Ancients Rising #3) by Katie Reus
This is the 3rd book is the Ancients Rising saga. This one is about Mikeal and Avery. He is a newly awakened dragon shifter enforcer, and she is a human that does house flipping. Katie brings us an enjoyable tale with a dark mage, vampires, dragonling, to go along with the shifter world. There is chaos, danger, and hot chemistry. This is a 4 star read.
The story was exceptionally well written and draws you in from the start. There is mystery, suspense and a growing attraction. The characters are strong and determined as they fight against evil. This is a fantastic series, can’t wait for more.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book; all opinions expressed are my own.
When the past comes to wreck havoc in both Avery & Mikael’s lives, they work together to protect and rescue each other from the dangers presented. Katie Reus’ Ancients Rising series is set in New Orleans rebuilding from the world being badly damaged at the end of her Darkness series when shifters were outed to the world. I really enjoy the teamwork we see as the city’s Alpha King, a wolf shifter, gets everyone to help each other rebuild their lives. This third story centers around Avery Cortez, a human house flipper ,and Mikael, an ancient dragon general-enforcer & his two younger brothers, that have recently awakened from hibernation. Avery’s past comes to visit as well as Mikael’s and they must work together to defeat the ancient evil.
The story opens with King asking Avery to house Mikael & his two brothers Casimir and Ivyn in her home. Given the dragon shifters have been asleep for centuries they need some guidance as they acclimate to the modern world. Avery has two younger brothers, Riel & Anthony living with her as well. When Avery’s mom died of cancer and Avery took over her brother’s care as their Dad left the family to marry Avery’s best friend Lindsay when their mom was sick. Dad, Shep comes to visit after having no association for 6 years, asking Avery to put in a word with King to get Shep better living conditions. Mikael makes sure Shep leaves when it’s clear he’s not welcome by any of them. Avery later runs into Lindsay as a vampire and her Dad’s now ex. As Mikael slowly works on getting Avery comfortable with him he’s come to realize she’s his mate. Then another foe hits New Orleans. Newly made vampires are killing humans when they feed. And an ancient foe of Mikael’s clan shows up to make things even more dangerous. The weaving of all these story threads makes a fabulous adventure.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is another terrific installment in this series. Mikael and Avery have been dancing around each other for the last two books and this is their story. Mikael is quiet, broody, and completely protective of Avery. They have created a family with her brothers and his. These characters have great chemistry, even though Avery wants to deny it. There is a new evil in the city and Mikael and Avery are caught in the middle and must stop it. I really enjoy this series and I’m looking forward to more books in the series.
I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher through Netgalley. The thoughts expressed are my own.
Mikael totally won my heart. A dragon shifter who lost many of his family thousands of years ago and recently emerged from hibernation with his two younger brothers. He has awakened to a new world and is trying to settle into the now combined supernatural and human world in New Orleans.
Avery is a human construction forewoman helping to rebuild the city along with her two younger brothers. And the Alpha, King has asked her to help house and guide Mikael and his brothers.
Eventually, this group becomes a self-made family. Mikael is broody, quiet, loyal, and protective. Avery is sweet, happy, independent, and caring. Mikael is sure from the beginning that Avery is his mate, but he is really slow on making a move and afraid of scaring her off. Avery put him in the friend-zone early on. She has made it clear she has trust issues and is not looking for a boyfriend. Even if she is having feelings, she does not think a simple human woman is good enough for a dragon shifter.
But when a new threat is discovered and their pasts come back to haunt them, they will have to stick together not only for their family, but also for the community at large.
Will they lose each other before they even have a chance to share their feelings?
It is a sweet, suspenseful, paranormal romance full of shifters, mayhem, and magic. These two are wonderful together and really have some challenges to get through. The villains in this one have some scary stuff in their arsenal and it introduces even more of this supernatural world. I really liked both of their brothers and their strong relationships. It also brings back other characters from this series to help along the way. I am so excited that King and Aurora finally get a story next in Ancient Vendetta!
He’s known as an Ancient and an Enforcer
Mikael and his brothers awaken from a Hibernation and find themselves in New Orleans, living with Avery and her two brothers. When Mikael sees Avery for the first time, he knows she’s his mate, but she’s resistant to the idea because of her past experiencesBut he’s going to do everything he can to win her heart
I loved this story and it came with a few surprises as well and I can’t wait to read King’s story nextI received an advanced copy via Netgalley and voluntarily leave my honest review
I can’t get enough of these Ancient dragon shifters. They have an intenseness to them since they come from a much older time. This world to them is to strange and they have some communication problems since they don’t understand the current slang. It’s very entertaining.
There is just so much to love about Mikael. He’s an ancient enforcer, so to see this intense shifter fall completely under Avery’s spell made me happy. He’s from a time where males takes what they want but he was patient with Avery. Maybe a little too patient, but it was sweet.
Avery was just a sweet heroine. She was kind and well liked. I like that she was the boss of all these male humans and shifters in her job. It shows how much everyone liked her since she didn’t have the hardness to her that a boss needs.
I enjoyed the plot twist. It kept things interesting and brought together so many of the side characters that I’m loving and enjoying in this series.
I’m also loving these dragon yearlings. I’m so excited about the potential for two more. I really hope we get to see them in upcoming books. They make me want my own pet dragon!
Gah, I can’t get enough of this series! Mikael and Avery are proof that every hero and heroine are exceptional.
Mikael was a bit lost after coming out of hibernation. He’s still learning what some of the sayings mean but he’s more than happy to be under the care of the human woman, Avery. Watching him struggle with his understanding of what he was experiencing with her was so much fun as was his complete jealousy when another male even looked her way. This author knows how to create heroes that check each of my boxes.
Avery was pretty fierce, despite the fact she was a human surrounded by shifters. She works a man’s job which I think made my heart yearn for her to find happiness with Mikael due to her lack of softer things in her life. The other women in the series also were a great contributing factor to the story and I loved them all even more for their continued support for one another.
This story thrums with action and drama from the very beginning. With a mystery at its core, suspense ramping things up towards the end, and the steamy awareness between Mikael and Avery throughout the whole book, this had me turning pages non-stop.
I’m completely captivated by this world! Every character centered here has already won my heart or is in the process of winning it. There’s one lion shifter I’m particularly anxious to see take the fall and I can’t wait until we get his story. Lord, I hope we get his story!
Ancient Enforcer (Ancients Rising #3) by Katie Reus I LOVE THIS SERIES
This is Mikael and Avery’s story we met them in an earlier book, King has placed him and his brothers with Avery and her brothers. Mikael knows she is his mate but it will take some time to convince her. This story has all the suspense, angst, really bad guys, laughter, tears, lots of old friends and a new one or two. There is love and plenty of steam and a dragonling to get us to a very HEA. I am hoping for more dragonlings in the next book.
I’m loving these Ancients Rising stories. Shifters claiming their mates while fighting evil. Action and intrigue, witches, shifters, vampires, and a whole host of supernatural beings, all make for a dramatic and sexy read. Book 3 sees dragon shifter Mikael finally manning up and admitting his feelings for sweet, caring Avery, a human, who, it appears has friend zoned him. She’s friend zoned him because she has trust issues, she’s been burnt in the past and doesn’t want a repeat. It just so happens that Mikael is quite good at reading the signs, and there’s no way he’s letting her go without a fight. Of course there’s a bad guy messing it up for him. Great story, intriguing characters (I’m looking forward to more of these magical misfits), and wonderful writing. I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is my honest review.
Rating: 3 stars – I liked it
House flipper Avery agrees to shelter three dragon shifter siblings who are struggling to adjust to the new world. She is instantly attracted to the oldest, Mikael, but refuses to act on it or let him know. But when an old enemy arrives and starts causing problems, Mikael and Avery are forced to confront their feelings.
I enjoyed Avery and Mikael’s story. These two have been ignoring their feelings for the past two books and I knew it was just a matter of time before they gave in. Avery wasa hardworking, independent, and extremely kind woman. Mikael is a quiet, brooding, alpha male who is extremely protective of Avery. I liked both of them and thought their relationship was very sweet.
Their adventure to stop the enemy from Mikael’s past was action packed and filled with a lot of emotional scenes. This book also expands this post-apocalypse world with new kinds of paranormals, and different realms connected to the world. All of which I found extremely fascinating. I love a unique setting that grows with every book. But my absolute favorite thing about this book was that there were more baby dragonlings!
Overall, this was another great addition to the series! I really hope the next book is King’s though because I know it will be a good one.
*ARC provided by Netgalley for an honest review.*
This was a great standalone paranormal romance story. I finished the book within a few hours and it left me with a smile on my face. I enjoyed the characters in this story a lot, especially King. Avery and Mikael’s story is one full of betrayal, jealousy, revenge and action. Its also funny, sweet and steamy but I do wish that there was more romance between the two characters. There were steamy parts but I needed a little bit more romance. Family means everything to both Avery, her brothers Anthony and Riel, and Mikael and his brothers Casimir, Ivyn and Zephyr. They will do what is needed to protect each other and Mikael will not let anything get in the way of making Avery his mate. So when outside forces threaten his family, he will risk his life to protect what’s his. The ending was sweet and I look forward to reading more books from this author.
5 stars
Mikael is a dragon shifter and he and his brothers just woke up after years of hibernation. He lost his older brother and parents right before they went to sleep. Avery builds buildings and flips houses and is no stranger to heartbreak. Her and her brothers live together and work together. King, the Alpha of the territory, asks Avery to house Mikael and his brothers. Mikael realizes Avery is his mate but he takes things very slowly. Avery’s brothers get taken and the kidnapper want a key that Mikael supposedly has. But with a vampire out there draining people and another creature turning humans, Mikael decides he’s gone slow long enough but he gets sucked into another realm and Avery will do whatever it takes to bring him back. Will Avery see her brothers or Mikael again?
Suspense, killing, and sexual tension. Mikael is strong and protective. Avery is independent and doesn’t believe in fairytales any longer. Loved it.
