She should be his mortal enemy.Ancient dragon shifter Rhys awoke from his slumber hungry for revenge against the witch who killed his sister. When his hunt takes him to the rebuilding city of New Orleans, he finds a woman he can’t keep his eyes off—but she’s a witch. While Rhys wants to despise all of Dallas’s kind, even he can’t deny that she’s beautiful, kind and…adorable. And her pet baby … her pet baby dragon only increases his fascination with the sexy woman. Protective instincts he never knew he had take over him as they hunt powerful monsters. He’s forced to confront everything he thought he knew about witches as his life is turned upside down.
But he wants her anyway.
Dallas Kinley is used to being hated because of what she is. Witches have always been the pariahs of the supernatural community. Until now, when the world needs rebuilding. Even though she wants to keep her distance from Rhys, vampires and humans are dying in New Orleans, so she vows to help him hunt down those responsible. But finding the enemy comes at a heavy price, because Dallas is hiding a terrible secret. As they race against the clock to find the murderers, she can only hope his need for revenge won’t rip them apart. Especially when he finds out what she’s been hiding from him.
Author note: Book can be read as a stand-alone complete with HEA.

Rhys is the brother to Lachland, and he has come out of hibernation with one thing on his mind REVENGE…
However, what he finds going on in the new world aka New Orleans means revenge may have to wait.
He is tasked by the Alpha King to protect a witch? A WITCH? of all things…
I love the chemistry and story between Rhys and Dallas, and baby Willow just seals it for me. Can’t wait to see who gets a story next.
A year ago, Rhys awoke from his hibernation with the same goal in mind – find justice for his sister’s murder. She was deceived by a friend, a witch who took her life to extend her own. He has a real hatred for witches and is willing to give his life for vengeance. Dallas is a powerful witch who has never really belonged. She’s used to being rejected for what she is, but Rhys quickly realizes that this witch may just be the exception to the rule.
There was so much to love about this book! I enjoyed that although it was about Rhys’s hunt for justice, it incorporated so many other things such as rebuilding after The Fall, mating and courtships, the bonds of family and friends, and finding love when it seemed impossible.
I was a bit overwhelmed with Dallas’s constant and repetitive thoughts when it came to being rejected and to Rhys’s eventual departure. I didn’t count, but she mentioned the inevitability of Rhys leaving her oodles of times. Aside from that, or maybe even despite that, I was quite entertained by this story. I adored these characters and I’m eager to discover more about the ones I briefly met. I need to know more about King (the Alpha of New Orleans) and the woman he’s fascinated with, Aurora (a phoenix shifter). I’ll definitely be reading the previous book of this series to completely immerse myself in this world. It was that good!
Ancient Enemy, the second book in the Ancients Rising series is an enjoyable read. It focuses on Rhys, the brother of Lachlan, the hero in the first book. Rhys is driven by revenge against the witch who killed his younger sister and his search brings him to New Orleans. There, while in Kings territory, her is paired us with Dallas, a witch who has skill in creating gardens and growing crops. Plus, Dallas has the cutest pet dragonling, which adds some sweetness to the story. Rhys and Dallas have really good chemistry and their journey is well worth the read. They both have baggage they have to unload and the author does a great job of bringing the reader along on their journey and keeping them interested and engaged.
I’m looking forward to the third book to see how the next story plays out.
I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher through Netgalley. The opinions expressed are my own.
Love how this series incorporates forgiveness, tolerance and great friendships with love stories that feel deeply. Well recommended for the hope it gives of a wonderful future being possible.
I’ve been a long-time fan of Katie Reus’s romantic suspense books. When 2020 hit us like a ton of bricks, I found myself not wanting to read my usual genre of books for long periods of time. So when someone suggested I try reading a genre I wouldn’t normally read, I thought it was a great idea and decided to take the plunge into this author’s paranormal romances. Before I knew it, I found myself completely submerged in all things Ancients Rising series. Now, I must confess that I did love the Twilight series (both the books–which I read first–and the movies). And if someone had asked me before I decided to read this series what type of shifter books I’d prefer, I probably would have said wolf shifters. Bearing my love of Jacob Black in mind, I decided that I would have to read something completely new to get myself out of my book funk. How great was it that one of my favorite romantic suspense authors had a fantastic line up of dragon shifter books ready to be devoured?! Ancient Enemy can be read as a stand-alone title, but I think you’re missing out on a great read in book one, Ancient Protector.
NICUnurse’s Rating: In this chaotic new world after The Fall, supernaturals no longer have to hide who and what they are. Well, except maybe for witches. They are what you’d call the black sheep of the supernatural world. Dallas has been rejected all too often because she’s a witch. So, when she agrees to help Rhys find the one person he needs to find in order to get revenge, there’s no way she can tell him her secret. Or can she?
Ancient Enemy was an excellent follow up to book one in this series. It had great characters, a fantastic magical world to fall back into, fast-paced drama and suspense, and an adorable pet dragonling. All of these added up to be hours of entertainment and escape for me. If you’re looking for that great escape from reality, especially if you enjoy paranormal romance books, this is a book you are not going to want to miss. Now I’m left not-so-patiently waiting on book three!
I give Ancient Enemy by Katie Reus 4 out of 5 stars!
I loved it! Rhys & Dallas are wonderful, but Willow won my heart. She is adorable & I hope she makes appearances throughout the series. Rhys & Dallas’ chemistry and banter cracked me up. I found them both endearing and exciting. As usual the suspense was filled with twists and turns & the romance with lots of steam. I cannot wait for the next book!
Ancient Enemy is the second book in the Ancients Rising paranormal series.
The two main characters are Rhys, an ancient dragon shifter, and Dallas, a sweet little witch. Rhys is sexy and broody, and Dallas is bubbly and beautiful. Although they were attracted to one another instantly, they both tried to fight it believing they had no future together.
Willow, Dallas’ pet dragonling, was too cute! Everyone should be able to have a rhinoceros-sized baby dragon as their very own pet.
I loved seeing old friends from the first book, and I cannot wait until more of them get their own stories. I am especially anxious to find out what happens between King and Aurora. They were in this book a pretty good bit, and it’s obvious they are perfect for each other. Please, please tell me they will end up together.
If you love paranormal romances, you will love this series as well as others by this author.
Ancient Enemy is the second book in the Ancients Rising series. Katie Reus does a great job of pulling the reader into the supernatural world filled with shifters, witches and vampires. Loved the chemistry between Rhys and Dallas and it was great to see all the characters from the first book. Lots of action and intrigue made this book a page turner. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
Great story, great characters.
Ancient Enemy by Katie Reus is book Two in the Ancients Rising Series. This is the story of Dallas and Rhys. I have read the previous book, so that did add to my enjoyment of this one. I do think you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Dallas is a witch who is used to having people hate her just because she is a witch. Rhys’s is a dragon shifter who went into hibernation after his sister was killed by a witch. So when he awakes he of course wishes to seek revenge for her death. Rhys ends up meeting Dallas and he tries to hate her for being a witch but he can’t stop his feelings of being protective of her and of course wanting more from her. I really enjoy Ms. Reus’s writing and I do recommend her books and of course this series.
Action packed, sexy, fun and heart racing adventure filled with dangerous charters, heart breaking secrets, emotionally thrilling twists and undeniable passion. Was a great read that was so hard to put down.
A well paced, compelling read! Ancient Enemy is the second book in the Ancients Rising series. Vengeance, love and betrayal, the character interaction was engaging and the storyline dynamic. I will be recommending this one and looking to read more
With a hot broody dragon on a quest for revenge, a sweet but surprisingly badass little witch with secrets, and the most adorable baby dragon, Ancient Enemy was just a huge helping of amazeballs topped with awesome sauce.
Dallas and Rhys were everything I’d hoped they’d be. I felt for Rhys and his struggle between being drawn to Dallas and fulfilling his need to take out the evil witch. Dallas definitely had the Mary Sue thing going on which is usually a huge no for me, but there was so much more to her than all that sweetness, I didn’t care. Together these two were dynamite and when they finally combusted, it was freaking awesome.
But as badass and amazing as they were, it’s Willow who stole the show. Everyone needs their own little baby wild dragon. And if that was enough awesomeness, when you add in all the cameos from some of my favorite couples from the Darkness series, I found myself having all kinds of fun in my paranormal happy place. And believe you me, I did not want to leave it when I read that last sentence. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!
Rating: 5 Dragons Have All The Fun Stars
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Katie Reus is one of my favorite authors. I love all of her series and this one is no exception. This is a page turner that keeps you wanting to know what happens next. I am looking forward to the next book.
Dallas and Rhys’ story has all the feels a reader would expect from a Katie Reus book. Dallas is a witch that is tasked by King with producing food to help in the rebuilding of New Orleans. She also has the cutest young pet dragon named Willow, that is so precocious that you can’t help but fall in love with her. Rhys, a dragon shifter, has awakened, and has only one agenda, to find and kill the witch that murdered his sister. He is also been tasked by King to protect Dallas from harm. Her being a witch is unknown to Rhys, and Dallas does not enlighten him due to his hatred of witches. The page turning action and secrets help drive this story with romance and drama for Rhys and Dallas as they find their HEA along with Willow.
**I was gifted “Ancient Enemy” via NetGalley and leave my review based on my reading** 5 Stars!
5 Stars
Intense, powerful and sweet! Rhys and Dallas will have you on the edge of your seat! A dragon shifter, determined to avenge the death of his sister, crosses paths with a woman he cannot resist, but Dallas has secrets of her own. A witch, living peacefully in New Orleans, Dallas and Rhys are paired up to help King find the murderers of vampires and humans in the city. All of the suspense in this story is mixed with sweetness courtesy of not only our main characters’ budding relationships, but also Dallas’s adorable pet dragonling, Willow. You will fall in love with Rhys and Dallas, as well as supernaturals we have met already in the series. Another phenomenal book in the Ancients Rising series that will be sure to make your heart race!
Cara – Alphas Do It Better Book Blog
I will be the first of many I am sure to admit that I am loving this new spin-off series concerning the Ancients by Katie Reus. The second book, Ancient Enemy is even better than the first if that is even possible. I must say that the world building is magnificent giving the true feelings that we are experiencing of a world out of control but with leaders trying to do their part. Sounds like right out of the news, doesn’t it, but so much better with paranormals at the helm.
The ideas in this story are big but also understated. It is not so much a choice between seeking revenge while holding onto bitterness and forgiveness, then it is choosing to love as the future focus. There is the subtle idea of evil verses good but with a twist to it. Meekness and goodness are looked at critically at as weakness, not the same at all which the villain sees in the end.
As for the main characters, Rhys and Dallas, I had a lot of fun with this one. The characters were great, with bias that they worked through. I loved the chemistry between them. Then there is a real cute little ole dragon baby, which kept this story from becoming too dark. Rhys’ and Dallas’ story is complete with the rebuilding of the world especially New Orleans still an ongoing theme. So there are teasing glimpses of another New Orleans couple, along with a sighting of some previous main Darkness Series characters.
Can’t help but wonder who will get their story next. One of the dragons of my favorite Reus dragon clan, Donnachaidh from northern Scotland still without a mate, maybe, but also a lion who needs taming and an alpha wolf pining away for another. Which every it is, without a doubt it will be worth reading just like Ancient Enemy.
An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ancient Enemy is the second book in the Ancients Rising series. It was another amazing read with wonderful characters. Rhys and Dallas were a wonderful couple with great chemistry. Rhys set out to kill a witch and avenge his sister. What he hadn’t planned on was falling for a witch along the way. This captivating story pulled me in and kept me riveted until the end. I can’t wait to read the next book in this amazing series.
Ancient Enemy is book 2 in the “Ancients Rising” series by Katie Reus. This is dragon shifter Rhys and witch Dallas’s story.
This is a sizzling PNR read that has two stories going on at once. Without giving much away, you have Rhys and Dallas ( and her little dragon) story, then you have the King and Aurora. OMG, what a story! I really want more of King and Aurora. I did love ancient dragon shifter Rhys and young witch Dallas. Their chemistry was sizzling. This is what makes PNR romances- the characters and chemistry. Then the action and romantic suspense. I loved the emotions and the heart. I hope the secondary characters/ storyof King and Aurora- that we get their story next. Overall great paranormal romance read.
My Rating: 4.8 stars *******
LOVED IT!
