AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The twisty new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door and A Stranger in the HouseA weekend retreat at a cozy mountain lodge is supposed to be the perfect getaway . . . but when the storm hits, no one is getting awayIt’s winter in the Catskills and Mitchell’s Inn, nestled deep in the woods, is the perfect setting for a … nestled deep in the woods, is the perfect setting for a relaxing–maybe even romantic–weekend away. It boasts spacious old rooms with huge woodburning fireplaces, a well-stocked wine cellar, and opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just curling up with a good murder mystery.
So when the weather takes a turn for the worse, and a blizzard cuts off the electricity–and all contact with the outside world–the guests settle in and try to make the best of it.
Soon, though, one of the guests turns up dead–it looks like an accident. But when a second guest dies, they start to panic.
Within the snowed-in paradise, something–or someone–is picking off the guests one by one. And there’s nothing they can do but hunker down and hope they can survive the storm–and one another.

Five couples and 1 single man are trapped by a snow storm at an inn. People are being killed, but by whom? Kept me guessing throughout the book. The ending was an unexpected twist!
Another awesome book by this author! Such good characters, easy to read, actually read it in one sitting!!!! Keep writing, your books are so good!
A good book, an old-fashioned whodunit, one which ends in the mind of the murderer, not the detective. While the author does a masterful job of plotting and developing a tense atmosphere, the ending felt a little pat, not delivering the full punch I had expected.
It’s in the style of the old movies where everybody gathers and suspects and motives are revealed….. Good Read!
It is one of the best crime novels I have ever read. It is the first to read for Shari Lapena and will not definitely be the last.
Definite page turner. This book was truly suspenseful. I could feel myself tensing up as I kept reading, waiting to see what was going to happen from one sentence to the next. The last couple of pages gave me chills.
Shari Lapena’s crisp writing style and skillful characterization infuse a classic mystery story with contemporary flare.
In the style of Agatha Cristie several guests weekend at an old B&B, Mysteriously the guests began to die off. Who is the killer? Well-written, this thriller had me racing through the pages to see who it was. Suspenseful and highly recommended.
Loved this book. The author did an amazing job developing and describing the characters. Would recommend to anyone who loves murder mysteries.
I read this book in rapid-fire speed just to get it read. If I was a book quitter, I would have just archived the book and found another to read. I have read other books by Shari Lapena, and I expected this one to be just as good. Disappointing. The set up of the book is great; the telling not so much. Weekend guest of a remote resort called Mitchell’s Inn are stranded due to a fierce winter storm. The power is out, ice has made the roads not passable, and all contact from the outside world is cut off. Shortly into the book, a guest turns up dead. And then several more, all of mysterious causes, but clearly murdered. The story is told from all of the characters’ points of view, and then rewound a bit to tell it again from another’s point of view. The ending was pretty anticlimactic. Just glad I got through it!
Shari Lapena has official became my favorite author! I first read “The Couple Nextdoor”, and now this one. I am looking forward to reading the other 2 as well! I love how suspenseful it is and easy to follow along. Although there are 10+ people in the story you can remember who is who through out the whole book. I kept trying to guess how the end was going to turn out and was wrong the whole time until the very end when it became a shock. Definitely a page turner.
Characters were awesome. very suspensful til the very end.
OK, little twist at the end, but setting not too convincing
Never disappointed when I read one of Shari Lapena’s books. I’m a fan!
Reminiscent of Agatha Christie books, An Unwanted Guest is a fast-paced, easy-to-read mystery. The ending was a little underwhelming.
On the book cover and on the first few pages, authors proclaim this book to be as good as one of Agatha Christie’s creations. One author even compares it to And Then There Were None, which is my favorite Christie book. However, nothing in this book is similar to Christie’s writing. Agatha Christie offered readers multiple clues to help lead readers to the solution. In this case, there was one clue. It wasn’t given until the end. And the murderer wasn’t revealed by a Hercule Poirot-like detective with an unraveling of the clues since there were no clues. We were told what happened but not shown. At the end of the book, the murderer explained the murder in his or her head.
The point-of-views jumped each chapter to the next chapter. We were stuck in the heads of thirteen people. They did a lot of thinking but little action.
I was disappointed.
Suspenseful and kept me guessing!
Great book with interesting characters. Keeps you guessing about “who dunnit” till the last few pages.
A good book that had a surprise ending.
This was fun to read during the Halloween season. Nicely wrapped up with a few twists at the end.
