An Irish Country Doctor from bestselling author Patick Taylor is a charming and engrossing tale that will captivate readers from the very first page–and leave them yearning to visit the Irish countryside of days gone by. Barry Laverty, M.B., can barely find the village of Ballybucklebo on a map when he first sets out to seek gainful employment there, but already he knows that there is nowhere … knows that there is nowhere he would rather live than in the emerald hills and dales of Northern Ireland. The proud owner of a spanking-new medical degree and little else in the way of worldly possessions, Barry jumps at the chance to secure a position as an assistant in a small rural practice.
At least until he meets Dr. Fingal Flahertie O’Reilly.
The older physician, whose motto is to never let the patients get the upper hand, has his own way of doing things. At first, Barry can’t decide if the pugnacious O’Reilly is the biggest charlatan he has ever met, or the best teacher he could ever hope for. Through O’Reilly Barry soon gets to know all of the village’s colorful and endearing residents, including:
A malingering Major and his equally hypochondriacal wife;
An unwed servant girl, who refuses to divulge the father of her upcoming baby;
A slightly daft old couple unable to marry for lack of a roof;
And a host of other eccentric characters who make every day an education for the inexperienced young doctor.
Ballybucklebo is long way from Belfast, and Barry is quick to discover that he still has a lot to learn about the quirks and traditions of country life. But with pluck and compassion and only the slightest touch of blarney, he will find out more about life–and love–than he ever imagined back in medical school.

A really nice easy reading story set in Ireland. Funny and very intertwining.
Lovely characters, took me to another time and place.
Well written account of the author’s working as a small town GP in Ireland. The characters and story lines are very good, and the book held my interest the entire time. I didn’t want it to end!
I loved reading this book which was light and entertaining and thoughtful about accepting all kinds of people
The obvious care felt for and given to the patients of this rural Irish general medical practice was heart-warming. The characters were all believable and delightful to get to know.
A great read. It was full of characters I wanted to spend time with.Just delightful.
It didn’t flow, I could have put it down at any time and not wondered how it ended. Fine for fluff lovers.
This is a remarkable story about a young medical doctor. The author can really spin a yarn. I’d prefer not to have so much foul language, but I’m not sure how the author could have cut it out entirely and kept his characters. It is a fun read, nonetheless.
Easy and quick read. Characters are appealing and interesting. Within a few pages they draw you in and make you want more.
Loved it and I really was surprised that such a simple story could be so fascinating! A happy ending for the young doctor or should it actually be the beginning? Wish I could visit that village during that time and meet some of the characters.
I give it a 10 +
This is a good read. I loved the characters and a look I to the Irish people.
Loved the Entire series
I’ve read all the Irish Country Doctor books and would recommend them not only for the enjoyment they bring, but much history is learned.
This is the first book in a series by Patrick Taylor. In it we are introduced to Dr. Fingal O’Reilly and his new assistant Dr. Barry Laverty. They are practicing in 1960 in a very small town in Ireland. I have enjoyed the series, as I have learned more about medicine in rural Ireland at the time, and I like the many colorful characters who …
