An Irish Country Doctor from bestselling author Patick Taylor is a charming and engrossing tale that will captivate readers from the very first page–and leave them yearning to visit the Irish countryside of days gone by. Barry Laverty, M.B., can barely find the village of Ballybucklebo on a map when he first sets out to seek gainful employment there, but already he knows that there is nowhere … knows that there is nowhere he would rather live than in the emerald hills and dales of Northern Ireland. The proud owner of a spanking-new medical degree and little else in the way of worldly possessions, Barry jumps at the chance to secure a position as an assistant in a small rural practice.
At least until he meets Dr. Fingal Flahertie O’Reilly.
The older physician, whose motto is to never let the patients get the upper hand, has his own way of doing things. At first, Barry can’t decide if the pugnacious O’Reilly is the biggest charlatan he has ever met, or the best teacher he could ever hope for. Through O’Reilly Barry soon gets to know all of the village’s colorful and endearing residents, including:
A malingering Major and his equally hypochondriacal wife;
An unwed servant girl, who refuses to divulge the father of her upcoming baby;
A slightly daft old couple unable to marry for lack of a roof;
And a host of other eccentric characters who make every day an education for the inexperienced young doctor.
Ballybucklebo is long way from Belfast, and Barry is quick to discover that he still has a lot to learn about the quirks and traditions of country life. But with pluck and compassion and only the slightest touch of blarney, he will find out more about life–and love–than he ever imagined back in medical school.

I found AN IRISH COUNTRY DOCTOR by Patrick Taylor to be a delightful escape — one that transported me to life in a charming Irish village. I kept telling myself, “Just one more chapter,” but it was never enough. I couldn’t stop turning the pages to find out what the cast of engaging characters was going to do (or fail to do) next.
I fell in love with this wonderfully written book! Read the sequel as soon as I finished this first one. Oh my goodness! If you have Irish blood in you, you will hear your grandparents speaking. And as an “old” nurse” I absolutely loved the knowledge of the doctors, amazing for the time -frame of the book. I also fell in love with the so very …
A charming, warm-hearted read reminiscent of James Herriot’s novels, and just as well written.
Dr. Barry Laverty and Dr. O’reilly are two doctors who live in Ballybucklebo Ireland. It is a small town and they help their patients. This is a great read for lovers of fiction who like a “normal ” story. I love the story and the books that follow
I love the slow pace and a peek into a different culture. The characters really grow on you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were delightful. I felt as though I was in Ireland. I have read Patrick Taylor’s other books, and wish he would write another
I really enjoyed the quirky characters in this book. I’ve read all of this series except the last one. Patrick Taylor is one of my favorite authors.
Interesting insights abound about rural and small town living in Ballybucklebo, Northern Ireland. The people, animals, and events are truly unique. I’m looking forward to the other books in the series to learn “the rest of the story”.”
The Doctor comes off as a curmudgeon but is really quite wiley. Love the small-town Irish flavor!
Funny at times, sad at others .Enjoyed the different characters living in the small Irish village, especially the main ones.
This is a great story! Very well told! I’m reading the whole series.
I expected a better story. It had it’s moments, but I’m not interested in reading the sequel.
Reads is if you are in the countryside of Ireland.
If James Herriot were a GP…
Loved the interaction between the 2 country doctors and their housekeeper. Story reminded me of Dr Finlay, less stuff and way dinner. Great read.
This is my all-time favorite ‘feel good’ series of books. All of the characters are believable and heart-warming.
I loved James Herriot’s “All Creatures Great and Small” series and this book seemed to copy Herriot’s book.
Reminds me of James Herriott the way the characters are developed. Just a very enjoyable romp.
Fabulous series
I was hoping book would be more like the stories of James Herriot, but not so much. But the story was entertaining and easy to read,
